I remembered watching this as a kid and thinking the score was much closer, memory is a funny thing. It took another 23 years after this until Australia beat the USA but the ground work laid by the Aussie guys in this in this game is the reason more and more Aussies play in the NBA and the reason the Boomers finally won in 2019.

I think it was the other way round. Commentators were a bit late on the action. US with Malone especially were trying to intimidate Aus and throwing arms and elbows the whole time. When it actually connected then the Aussies started to fight back

Australia was let down by basic skill errors too often, such as bounce passes to feet and wide open jumpers that missed. Fisher in particular looked like he was sleep walking on the court. Incredible shooting by Heal though, and that lob pass by Gaze to McKinnon was sweet, as was McKinnon's finish.
