What I enjoy most about your reactions is how genuinely interested you are in understanding and learning about what you react to! I love it when people manage to retain their curiosity as an adult. Also I am very impressed by your knowledge about the greater contexts when it comes to history, geography, geology, etc. You may not always know the details, but you're usually very close and know to ask the right questions: • "I wonder if Austria gets less mountainous as you go east." (Yes) • "What other countries do you guys border? Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia maybe, [...] Slovenia" (perfect; you only missed Germany) • "Did the Ottomans ever reach Austria?" (Yes, just)

Yeah the Ottomans besieged Vienna twice (1529 and 1683). The 1683 Battle of Vienna saw a Christian force led by the King of Poland push the Ottomans back from Vienna and then gradually out of central Europe. Austria is so amazing for the scenery, skiing, food and drink. A must visit!

Sorry, i have to: the part about the polish king: the relive army was made up of several different contingents. One of which were the (famously even making it into metal songs) winged Husars under the polish king. The emperor of the HRE was not commanding that relieve army, he had had to contractually give the on paper leadership to the polish king for them to take part in the relieve of the siege. The planning and tactics and everything alese were not part of this. He was the "on paper" leader as he was the guy with the highest rank on site, and so he got the prestige of the victory. He and his troops made up the right flank while the left flank and the middle were made up of what is today austrians, germans, and italians. And they all together did something the ottomans did not expect or think possible: they marched the whole army over a little densly forrested mountain and appeard at dawn on an unexpected side of the besiegers and came down of the slopes and drove into them even into their camp. If you ever watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy or read the books. You can see an inspiration for Tolkien in that siege: Compare it with the Siege of Minas Tirith and the ride of the Rohirrim through the forest. And to them pushing the ottomans out of europe: against the will of the austrians the polish king was adamant to give his horse some rest. And so the forces did not pursue the ottomans immediately. They waited so long that the ottomans were able to regroup and gather themselves a 40 000 strong force to oppose them when they reached a city in todays slovakia. The polish king with his cavallry was way ahead of the artilery and the infantery so when they clashed the poles got in trouble (outnumbered). And had to flee back to the emperial troops they had advanced before. (Polish nobleman and participant Jan Chryzostom Pasek wrote about it.) A few days later the whole army then was able to push back the ottomans. So there is a huge myth about the unbeatable winged husars which actually were just well trained husars like most. But due to their parttaking in the relieve of vienna and the contractual signing they and their kings abilities and successes are a little exaggerated at times in the web. Fun Fact: on the mountain the relieve army crossed the city of vienna wanted to make a monument showing Jan Sobiesky. But they (to this day) could not agree what it should look like. So the little kiosk selling traditional austrian fast food (Würstelstand) up there is called Sobiesky. (In austria that's almost more of a privilige than a statue)

9:21 Richard Lionheart being imprisoned: Very close guess: it was on his way back home. On the crusade he had angered Duek Leopold (whos lands he was crossing now) because after a significant battle when all the flags of the leaders were raised King Richard let Duke Leopolds flag be taken down and thrown into the dirt. (because he was a king, and the french leader was a king and in his view Leopold was "only a Duke") The ransom the british paid was used to found 2 cities in austria (Wiener Neustadt and Friedberg) and the austrian mint.

The mountains in Austria are highest in the southwest (Großglockner 3798m on the border of Carinthia and Salzburg) and become lower towards the east. The Semmering is the last slightly higher Alpine pass before the capital Vienna. Vienna lies in a basin that merges to the east into the Hungarian Plain. Austria's neighboring countries are: Germany and the Czech Republic in the north, Slovakia in the northeast, Hungary in the east, Slovenia and Italy in the south, Lichtenstein (small duchy) and Switzerland in the west.The last time there was volcanic activity in Austria was 6 million years ago in the south (Southern Styria and Carinthia). When the Alps were formed, volcanic eruptions occurred in these areas. Today there are a lot of hot springs there that get the water from greater depths where the subsoil is still hot. A medieval fortress (Riegersburg) stands on an approx. 100m high basalt rock from this period (South Styria).The largest collection of weapons from the period from the 14th century to the 16th century is in Graz (Zeughaus which means weapons depot). The Turks besieged Vienna twice in 1529 and 1683, both times they were expelled. Unfortunately, they plundered and burned the east and south of Austria.The Rhein-Main-Danube Canal connects the North Sea with the Black Sea.

8:54 Well, the Danube has no straight connection to the Baltic Sea, but you can go via the Main-Danube-Canal up to the North Sea. So yes, with small ships and boats you're capable to go from the Black Sea to the North Sea and vice versa.
@stephanweinberger
@stephanweinberger 4 ай бұрын
"Small ships" being up to 135m long and 11.45m wide and a draft of up to 2.7m; pushed barges can measure up to 190m in length. This allows vessels of up to 190*11.45*2.7 = 5870 tons, so actually a quite significant tonnage. Annually there are about 6.7 million tons of goods shipped through the Main-Danube-Canal.
@DIVERSION-one
@DIVERSION-one 4 ай бұрын
@@stephanweinberger You're right, but those bigger ships don't use that canal as often as it was intended to. It's literally an 'unsuccessful' costly construction compared with the few traffic on that canal. Only here and there you find some "lost" smaller ships there. There are always since a long time some rumors to close the canal.
@stephanweinberger
@stephanweinberger 4 ай бұрын
@@DIVERSION-one Well, when it was first proposed, the estimates were around 4 million tons per year, so measured by that it's actually doing pretty well. It just got a kinda bad reputation, when after the fall of the iron curtain there were some unrealistic & overenthusiastic speculations that the cargo volume could rise to 10+ million tons annually (but that was long after construction had started, so it wasn't the reason for the project).

Also some more interesting facts about Austria: - Austria is not in the Nato (like Swiss), but is surrounded by Nato-countries - Vienna is one of the four main locations of the United Nations Organisation (UN or UNO), the other main locations are New York, Genf and Nairobi. Among other things UN Vienna has branches such as International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEO), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). - Austria has the most part of the Alps: around 61.500 km² (or 28,7 % of the alps). 2/3 of the alps are covering Austria, most on the west, and least on the east. And half of the country is covered with forest. - Austria has the oldest zoo that is still in operation (the zoo was founded in 1752 but before that there was also a zoo there) - We have also one of the oldest buisness still in operation. It is located in Salzburg and it's called St. Peter Stiftskulinarium. The restaurant has been documented since the year 803. (all older buisness are located in Japan) - Austria is known for Nobel prizes. We have 25 of them. For a small country that is impressive. - We have 695 mountains that are higher than 3000m - Austria is known to be UNESCO world heritage. Even our funeral tradition and coffee houses are considered UNESCO heritage (phew, who would know you can say both things in same sentence?) - Austria is the land of titles and we are very proud of that - Vienna ís nearly four times bigger than Paris, but has less population (yeah, let that sink in!) - Austria's BIP is 5th in the EU, and rank 25th in the world - Austria's offical language is german. Many Austrians are learning English in school (some even in Kindergarden = preschool). The word: "Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunteroffiziere" is the longest german word. - Vienna is known for beer but also for wine. We have vineyards in the urban area. Other wine regions are Styria and Burgenland. - Austria is known for bread (yes, not only Germany has bread). We have over 300 sorts of bread. - We have more than thousends of different sausages - The croissant originates from Austria. The original is the Vienna "Kipferl" and according to a legend it's because one of the sieges of the Ottomans. - Inventions made in Austria/from Austrians (or at least partly): Postcard, Co-founder of the Panzer, birth-control pill, blood groups, rhesus factor, printed circuit boards (without that most of our electronic stuff like pc or mobile phone wouldn't work), first physical-theoretical explanation of nuclear fission, Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (that's how wifi works), one of the inventors of the sewing machine, wood typewriter, slow-motion, propeller, first electro car, first waterproof mascara, opera watcher, first mass-produced armchairs, bouncy castle, rocket technology, fitted kitchen, first shopping center, toothpaste from the tube PS: Did you know the biggest open air festival is NOT Coachella but it's the Donauinselfest in Vienna? It has over 2,8 Million visitors in 2024 (and 3,1 million in 2016). It has 14 stages and the entry is free! And Austria is known for ballroom season (mostly in autumn). There are around 400 ballroom events (of different kinds) each year.

Answers to some of your questions Austria is bordering Hungary, Slovenia, Italy. Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Czechia, Slovakia. About 2/3 of the state territory is mountainous.. The Ottomans besieged Vienna twice unsuccessfully arriving via Hungary. The first Siege was 100.000 Ottomans in arms against 17.000 men in arms defending the city..and was from 27th of September till 14th of October 1529..a hard outbreak of Winter forced the Ottomans to retreat. The second Siege was 120.000 Ottomans in arms against 11.000 men in arms defending the city..and was from 14th of July till 12th of September 1683...Vienna was then rescued by an relief army under the lead of the Polish King Jan Sobietzky with troops from Poland + Saxony + Bavaria + Imperial troops all in all 74.000 men in arms, 34.400 of those was cavalry and 14.000 of the cavalry were Polish Winged Hussars (=Elite lance bearing riders who had a pair of large wings mounted on their back of their saddles) who led the attack which totally wiped out the Ottomans . Lionheart was on his way back home from the crusades. There was a disput at the siege of Acre between Duke Leopold + Lionheart... Duke Leopold (who was from the Babenberger Dynasty who were Austria´s original leaders before that Dynasty died out and the Habsburgs inherited their feudal tenures) was the leader/head of the German Crusaders. At the storm on Acre´s walls lead by Lionheart English Crusaders + French Crusaders + German Crusaders together stormed Acre´s walls and the German Crusaders were first who conquered the walls so they were entiteled for the first pick of the loot but Lionheart denied them their fair share of the loot entirely and the German Crusaders instantly sailed home extremely pissed with empty hands. So as Lionheart went back home from the Holy Land some years later he had to take the landroute through Austria due to weather conditions which made it impossible to sail home by ship , knowingly that this meant trouble because of what happened in Acre, Lionheart disguised his appearance and travelled incognito through Austria and near Vienna he got recognized and instantly imprisoned by Duke Leopold in order to pay compensation for what happened in Acre. But Lionheart wasn´t hold in a prison but treated well as like a King and as like "a guest" but couldn´t leave the fortress Dürnstein where he was held hostage, Leopold then handed Lionheart over to the Emperor who held him hostage also being treated as like "a guest" till the compensation was payed which got then shared between the Emperor and Duke Leopold. (The whole Robin Hood legend is based on that historical event by the way, because the English people had then to pay higher taxes in order to pay for Lionheart´s compensation = that´s why in the Robin Hood legend the Sheriff of Nottingham had to heavily tax the people of his district in order to collect the district´s share for Lionheart´s compensation which was the cause for the Robin Hood legend) Those bulbous spires are typical baroque architecture and were a modern trend in the 17th + 18th century especially for monastries + churches built at that time.

Just wanted to say that the winged husars under Jan Sobiesky weren't really "leading the charge". THe polish king had secured the contractual leadership of the troops for even showing up. Meaning, the holy roman emperor had to sign a paper that the polish king would be "on paper" the leader of the relieve army. Yet the planning and strategic decisions weren't made by him. And at the charge down the Kahlenberg the polish king was a little too eager and started the charge of the right flank he was the leader of almost a little too early. So the left wing and center had to start earlier than agreed on to keep the battle line intact. (But as he was the on paper leader he got all the praise and even today, there are metal songs and everything leaving out the rest of the army and their contribution almost completely) Other than that i have nothing to add to your great comment.

@@nirfz I wrote there were also troops from Saxony + Bavaria + Imperial troops. I didn´t forget the others. I even pointed out that the Polish were just 14.000 out of 74.000. But at the charge the Polish were the first so the rest had to catch up. And it would be logical that not 1 single man can lead a charge of 74.000 men. For me that is actually self-explaining.

The regions in the east are partly flat and with outstandingly beautiful nature and villages! (Neusiedler See, Seewinkel... villages like Rust, Mörbisch, Illmitz, etc.). And dont neglect the south-eastern part of Styria - still mountainous, but lower - nontheless outstandingly beaufiful places - especially for those who love wine! And... the northern part of eastern Austria... Waldviertel, Mühlviertel, Weinviertel. Have a look - you will love it, even though it does NOT fulfill the quite limmiting cliche of "All high mountains" Alpine Austria.

This brought back memories. I have stayed on the Austrian/Italian border in the Val de Aurino, (sorry, I've forgotten its Austrian name). This is a beautiful valley full of delightful little villages which all have both Austrian and Italian names. It's an hour to Innsbruck in the North and the same to Lake Garda in Italy to the south. Austria also borders Slovakia to the south east. I have also stayed in the Drei Ecker region, where Austria, Switzerland and Lichtenstein meet. It means Three Corners. Germany is also very near. The Wachau Valley is very beautiful. I was there on a Rhine cruise from Linz to Budapest and back. But Richard the Lionheart was only the King of England. Britain as a political entity did not exist until the 18th century. Vienna is a great city. They showed Schonburg Palace, big, yellow, with a manicured garden, but never mentioned it by name. Also they showed St. Stefan's Cathedral, but never mentioned it. It is known affectionately as 'Alt Stef' (Old Steve) by the locals. One criticism I have, is why don't they play appropriate music on these videos, instead of the stuff you hear when you've phoned the doctor?

They believed that the entirety of Europe would fall when Vienna was conquered. So they besieged Vienna twice (1529 and 1683) With the help of European Allies (other German states of the Holy Roman Empire in 1529 and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1683) the Ottomans were beaten back both times. In a sense the Ottomans were in Austria but both times only very shortly.

"Did the Ottomans ever reach Austria?" Are you kidding. They unsuccessfully besieged Vienna twice (in 1529 and in 1683). They considered Vienna, having been the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, a gateway to conquer central and western Europe.

You are right about the onion style reminding you of the Ottoman Empire: baroque architecture was heavily influenced by the Byzantine and Ottoman styles like domed roofs and the onion towers. It was also the time when Oriental studies were established in Vienna to further relations to the regions. Of course, Austrian architects still put their own twist on it, so while reminiscent of the original style it's still its own thing. Shame they didn't really show any of these buildings from the inside...
