I'm not a big rinseless or waterless wash person but I understand the need for it and I'll use it when needed. Before jumping into N-914 let's talk about the old solution: ONR. I wasn't a huge fan of Optimum ONR because of the fact it had polymers in it & wasn't just a pure cleaner (think of car shampoos with stupid wax in them). After getting a lot of input from the guys at work and from some Obsessed Garage fans like Daniel Guss, we've decided to move to use McKee's 37 N-914 rinseless solution.

Oh boy... I'm never THAT guy...but I do have a few thoughts based on my experience with years of rinseless washing with ONR here in the great white (and salty) north. I'm a rinseless zealot, I love it like you love your soap process. I do probably 100 rinseless washes per year. In addition to the fact that doing a 2 bucket wash outside here in MN is either very unpleasant or downright impossible for 6 months out of the year...I also have extremely hard water. I would blow through CR Spotless resin like crazy. I also have southern exposure in my driveway with no shade except at dawn/dusk. This is great in the winter, because I'll pull the car out and pressure wash it with hot water when it is 15 degrees and sunny and my driveway (usually) won't turn into a skating rink...then I'll just quickly retreat back into the garage and do my ONR process. Other than a few recent GSF washes, the only time I use soap and 2 bucket method is when I'm doing a decon prior to polishing...and even then I sometimes do rinseless. Because of the hard water and the fact that I'm always fighting the sun...I have to really rush through a soap wash and I don't enjoy that at all. I don't do waterless, though I do pretreat with Opti-Clean in the winter time when the car has been caked in road salt. The only other time I'll do waterless is if my car gets bird bombed right after I washed it. But even then, I always have a bucket of rinseless ready to go... So I will usually just wash that entire panel. All that said...here are some bullet points of my thoughts: - I'm with Kyle in that I believe rinseless means you just aren't rinsing the car before you dry it. Unless my car is only a little dusty, or has just been in a little rain...I always pressure wash it first. Then it is no longer a "superficial clean." It gets off the bulk of the dirt and crud, and gets into all the little crevices that you can't reach with a rinseless sponge or towel. - N914 is a great product. I would pick it over soap any day of the week. I've tried it off and on and I like it...but I still don't trust it like I do ONR. McKee's has some great products, but I'm sure they aren't mixing this up themselves. Their product line is ridiculously huge. Compare to Optimum, who has a tailored and minimalistic product line built around ONR. I trust Dr. G, and ONR has a proven track record. While I may not fully understand it, we know what is in it. We don't know what is in N914, I can't find an SDS sheet for it anywhere. I've requested one from McKee's, but they haven't responded. - I don't believe that the polymers "left behind" by ONR are a problem. They aren't adding any lasting protection, and if you are using a drying aid/topper it is a proverbial drop in the bucket. Lots of guys that use pad washers (including Levi and Anthony at TRC) use ONR in their pad washers, and I believe they have even used ONR as a SWA during polishing. To the extent that ONR is leaving something behind, it isn't going to cause any problems...and I think N914 leaves something behind too. - Levi and Anthony have done extensive testing on most (if not all) rinseless washes recently and they are sticking with ONR despite pulling a big chunk of the Optimum line from their store. Granted, it may be a business decision to stick with ONR...but I trust their judgment and opinion that ONR is the best option. - If you have experienced streaking with ONR, I think you probably had it mixed too strong. I've experimented with adding an extra capful or two to my bucket (256:1 is one capful per gallon of water) and that is the only time I've ever noticed any streaking. - I've experimented with ONR and N914 side by side. With the new formulation of ONR (released early this year I believe) I don't notice any difference in slickness between the two. I think the extra slickness people perceive with N914 may be a placebo...but I may also be biased towards ONR because I trust it. - In my process, I do regular quick interior wipe downs with ONR. I trust that ONR is safe for this, and isn't leaving behind anything that is going to damage or build up on my leather. McKee's doesn't advertise this use case, and I've never seen anyone else mention it either. - I'm always using ONR in the house. Windows, counters, floors, walls, stainless steel appliances...so I always have a bucket of ONR ready to go so I can fill my spray bottles from it, or dunk in a microfiber. I use rinseless sponges (Big Red Sponge and now Ultra Black Sponge from TRC) so I like to store them in solution. If I do this with N914, it starts to stink after a few days. As I said, I do think N914 is a great product...I just don't think it's for me. I'll be sticking with ONR, but if this gets more people on the rinseless train... I'm all for it. Soap isn't bad, but with the right process I do believe that rinseless is the superior wash method and it is safer for the paint.

Great write up Jeff. I actually use ONR, N-914, and OP Eco Wash. It’s kind of complicated, but basically I use ONR when I’m using the Optimum synergy on a car that already has Car Wax or Opti-Seal on it, N-914 when a car has any other protection on it (mostly Turtle Wax Seal and Shine for me) since N-914 leaves nothing behind. I love that about it. Then I use OP Eco Wash when a car has any protection from Owner’s Pride on it (which I’m transitioning away from). I find ONR is the easiest to work with and takes the longest to dry, N-914 leaves nothing behind, and Eco Wash is the best cleaner. It’s almost an all purpose cleaner, it’s that good. In conclusion, I agree with pretty much everything you said but I like having all three in my arsenal for different purposes.

I suspect you are being over cautious about the leather - as Darren from Auto Fetish has told us 1000 times - in almost all cases, the leather is coated, and can be cleaned with general purpose fluids. (but he does still caution to test in an inconspicuous spot). I use a VERY strong cleaner on my "leather" for deep cleaning - Optimum Power Clean at 2:1. Not the slightest problem. Great post though - thanks.

Generally, its too expensive to hire a chemist then build a manufacturing plant and bottling line to produce your own product. Its much cheaper to hire a mixer/bottler to do at least some of the process. Its not a bad thing, just necessary to get decent products to the consumer at a reasonable price.

N-914 *does* "feel" slicker. What you feel with your hands does not automatically mean it protects better... An interesting little test can be found wherein dirty water in two jars had ONR in one, N-914 in another... The ONR jar = quick precipitation of the particles while the N-914 kept the particles in suspension - in fact, in another test, the Griot's product performed much better than the N-914 (but not as well as the ONR and requires 2x as much product). Encapsulating the dirt is a critical part of the rinseless wash. How they compare for this would be hard for most of us to test, but slickness felt by our hands is not a great way. Being able to use a single bucket and ensure that the dirt releases from the sponge AND drops to the bottom of the bucket is a key element of using the products as intended. ONR seems to have some significant advantages in matters related to a rinseless product working as it is intended. N-914 is certainly no slouch. It does smell pretty great and does feel slick. It also seems to be better at cleaning more stubborn contaminants. It is not an ONR killer.

@@jayhoughton558 You did the original on the other sites or duplicated it for yourself? Either way, it is extremely interesting. In all honestly, I am not certain which one "protects" better when actually washing. Part of me believes the N-914 does not settle as much because it dissolves the particles more thoroughly (certainly removes visible discoloration from the sponge/towel especially well). Which is better for protection? I seriously do not know. I love them both. I wish I could just get rid of one and use the other exclusively, but instead, I go back and forth for different situations. They're both great. Thank you for the post!

Matt: genius idea here for you guys. Would be killer if you found a way to get those job specific towels somehow died or labeled to break down the eight different portions of the towel numbered 1-8 when folded appropriately. So for example after folding and beginning cleaning it would be easy for the user to dirty part one, then flip to part two, then part 3, and so on. Even better would be if you could get all those towel manufacturers to produce the towels in white with color coded edges and OG labeling. So much easier to spot dirt on a white towel.

Good video Matt. Like you said everyone has a different process. For example mine is different as I’ve refined it from water restrictions years ago here in Southern California. But the overall concept is the same. N914 is a great product and actually it was a substitute replacement for Meguiar’s D114 which was discontinued and those of us looking for something that left nothing behind transitioned over to N914. Some maybe to young to remember this. I tried ONR and just wasn’t a fan of it. N914 just does a better job from my experience using it since it’s initial release. It is also a very good clay lube. I can just see all of the ONR folks who will be triggered saying it’s king and blah blah. It used to be but there are so many options these days that are even better. I also agree that opti-clean is as to streaky and I tossed it in the trash. Great job as always by the OG Team 👍

Hey Matt, I like your no nonsense, no BS style with a few rants thrown in for free! Shorts would be useful for a quickie but I would still go back to the longs for the normal you. I suggest "OG Unpacked" for the short version? BTW, Ive stayed away from rinseless but will have to use them now we have a hosepipe ban. Thanks for this video and good luck with the OG Unpacked!

I would take this product for its multiple uses plus its very slick. I'm surprised he hasn't used it before pressure washing the car to encapsulate the dirt. Then rinse and wash by hand to minimize driving everything into the paint

Can you explain how its a superficial cleaning and not as clean. What data or proof besides your assumption do you have to back that up that rinseless won't be as clean? Rinsless doesn't meant you don't use a pressure washer it means you don't rinse as a last step. We've seen evidence when used pre treated with pressure washer then the rinseless does a great job

Painful to watch Matt spray the whole car with a trigger spray! Dump the used towels in a bucket of water (or ONR), to really ensure they come out of the subsequent wash (laundry machine) really clean.

Any difference between pre wash and post wash gloss metre readings would likely be completely eaten up by inaccuracy, so that whole process would be pointless. Why do you need a number for “gloss” before and after washing? You wash to get the car clean…

As far as rinseless presoak spraying systems, need to look into Detail Kegs. I've got mine hooked up through a 1/4 air hose reel with a sprayer. Game changer with pre-spray at 150psi. This system can be used to blast off bugs and loose dirt on panels /wheels and is the only thing that's successfully allowed me to use rinseless as a true alternative to foam + bucket wash.

Not a fan of any kind of rinseless wash, no matter how many times people say it doesn’t scratch the car. BUT sure seems like the nice pressure sprayers would be perfect for this kind of product. The hundred hand squeezes per panel just seems so DIY/make shift.

N914 is far better than ONR….been using both for the the past few years. However, if you want a rinseless that is better than N914 in every way, try the Gloss Shop’s Sublime. Same dilution ratio’s as N914, leaves nothing behind, better cleaning power, and noticeably more lubrication. Try it out next to n914 and you’ll see the difference.

I’m an ONR user but also have a bottle of chemical guys rinseless wash I’ve never really used and thought what the hell so I mixed some up in a bottle and sprayed my door Jambs down and it’s one of the slickest feelings I’ve felt. Was kinda blown away. I looked up the SDS for CG rinseless and it has carnuba wax in it. Maybe that’s why? What I previously thought may be garbage might turn out to be really good. I’m hesitant to try it as rinseless for my main car body though since it’s a brand new car. Waiting for someone to review it. Also would you try DIY Detail rinseless?

Come the weekend i will do a complete wash of the wheels and they clean up easily. I also use the sio2 version on my exhaust tips. Works fantastic as long as they are kept up.

@@MTNorville never understood why Matt doesn’t use a pump sprayer for this. I guess when he says work smarter not harder it doesn’t apply here. I know he’s complained about pumping pump sprayers in the past but pumping a spray bottle is just as tedious for a job like this... I’ve always used a pump sprayer for rinseless until I found a 64oz battery operated pump sprayer. It doesn’t atomize well and the spray pattern is wonky. I wouldn’t use it for anything else. But for a rinseless my goal is just to wet the panel and it does a great (and quick) job.

It’s a, I want to go for a drive in a clean looking car but not to a car show. You need to build a form cannon process for a touch less wash. Heavy rinse, foam it and blow dry it. I have a process that works on a car that hasn’t seen rain.
