McLaren F1 Redesign: What if it was built TODAY?

Originally a concept conceived by engineer Gordon Murray, he convinced Ron Dennis, the owner, CEO, and founder of McLaren Group to back the project and engaged Peter Stevens to design the exterior and interior of the car.
Gordon Murrey had always dreamed of a 3 seater car where the driver had a central driving position in the car. His idea of a fast car meant a naturally aspirated engine, low weight and a lot of power.
This meant that the McLaren F1 was built using high-tech and expensive materials such as carbon fibre, titanium, gold, magnesium and kevlar. The F1 was also one of the very first production cars to use a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis
When Murray visited the Honda’s Research center with Ayton Senna in the late 80s, he had the chance to take the Honda NSX out on the track.
This experience changed his perception of what he wanted the McLaren F1 to be completely. Prior to driving the NSX, Murray had the top of the line Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghinis in mind of what to aim for with the F1.
However, the Honda NSX's ride quality and handling would become the new design target.
Being a fan of Honda engines, he went back to Honda's Research Centre on two occasions and requested that they consider building the McLaren F1 a 4.5-litre V10 or V12.
In the end he could not convince Honda to do it, and as we all know the McLaren F1 ended up equipped with a BMW engine. The 6,1L BMW V12 had a power output of 627 PS at 7,400 rpm and 479 lb⋅ft of torque at 5,600 rpm.
The car was first unveiled at a launch show, 28 May 1992, at The Sporting Club in Monaco. The production version remained the same as the original prototype (XP1) except for the wing mirror which, on the XP1, was mounted at the top of the A-pillar.
This car was deemed not road legal as it had no indicators at the front and McLaren was forced to make changes on the car as a result . However some cars, including Ralph Lauren's, were sent back to McLaren and fitted with the prototype mirrors and who can blame them, it looks pretty cool especially with the incorporated indicators. A feature pretty much all car manufacturers would adopt several years later.

Can you make a Porsche Cayman "redesign" where the A-Pilar is above the front tire. I am interested to so this, because it is a mid engine car but the greenhouse is more in the back than other mid engine car. The 911 has also a A-Pilar more to the back than the front tire and it would be nice to see more diffrences between that 2 cars. (I am from Germany so sry for the grammar or spelling mistakes)

I honestly like it, it ages on you. More muscular on the back but I would also change the pressure release on the door to be more curved. The P1 type curved headlights are something I like. The ram air intake is too much to the back. Overall solid

It's his improvement, since it's a personal project of his and he felt like he had to leave out things from the F1 because of cost and time compromises. But I would not say his rendition of the successor, the T.50, is an improvement. At least in terms of the styling, it lacks the soul and character of the F1 (not to be a copy, the T.50 feels too clinical whereas the F1 has a rawness to it). Technically yes it appears to be an improvement/successor for being a true drivers' car. But the looks didn't improve on the F1 imo, and in that regard its subjective anyways.

it's kinda funny I just came from his video about muscle cars and how overstyling has killed the Mustang and the Camaro - and now we see his exact example, himself overstyling the F1 as a way to make it look "modern". That's the problem, it's easy to analyze from the perspective of an observer, but its far more difficult to actually be mindful of your own observations and put it into effective use in your own work. This (imo) didn't modernize the F1. It simply gave it up to modern trends, which do nothing but date the car.

This redesign really works well. I thought the harsh “separate greenhouse” look would clash with the line flow when attempted at the same time, but all the elements you’ve introduced are so cohesive. The extra curves on the front just behind the headlights add so much dimension for how subtle they are, and the added lower vent on the side that flows into the sculpted piece on the door, pulls the visuals together. The straight lines on the side date the look slightly, but it’s recognizably an f1 that looks very modern mclaren

Very beautiful design! A few notes: It might be worth checking out the P1, they have similar lines, and the P1 has a beautiful design from the rear- rear lights are integrated into the lines of the car perfectly. 2. The side air intakes actually remove an interesting design feature of the original Mclaren F1- the side storage compartments. The F1 is one of the few supercars that can store 2 suitcases, one on each side near the rear of the car. They likely won't work in most re-designs of the F1, but I thought it was worth mentioning!

It's amazing. In fact, it resembles a drawing I did last year with the same exact theme. There's one single detail left for it to be perfect: most modern McLarens have the tips of their front perfectly curved, like a circle instead of an arrow. This one is still too pointy as if it were a Saleen or the LaFerrari or a Pagani.

nah...looks more like a elongated mrs with a ferrari rear and a huge gaping fan on the rear which completely ruins the sleekness of the car....so no i would not consider as a successful successor imo....the F1 had sleekness the rawness of the design and atleast its fans didnt ruin its design....the fans were hidden behind the bumper and under the car!

I think it's interesting that your redesign literally turned out like a bit of a speed tail. Just shows that the Speed tail is the real successor of the F1 and how much thought the designers have put into it. Great video and great redesign!

@SUPERBLASTER 007 well, I think the speedtail took most of its inspiration from the F1s legacy of the "fastest car in the world" at the time, that's why it's so high speed focused. Gordon Murrays T50 on the other hand takes the track and driving aspects as the basis to evolve. If you think like it from a Pokémon standpoint (sorry but I think it illustrates that pretty good) you have the F1 and it either evolves into the Speedtail or T50 if you focus either on speed in a straight line or a track and driver experience focused package. Like for example Gallade is a physical attacker and Gardevoir is a special attacker.
