@@LawVS I'm not a McLaren fan, but I don't dislike them at all. I said to my buddy last week when they were in Austria that I like Oscar, because he's never on the radio pissing and moaning about all the other drivers. If he sees something, he says it once but only when it's a slam dunk like Hamilton and the pit entry. Unlike Lando, who was miles back but 'THEY BOTH REJOINED VERY UNSAFELY!' for the Mercs. Like, piss off, Lando. You've got a faster/better car than them. Just beat them on track. Oscar just seems to be the ONLY driver that isn't constantly trying to tattle on the rest of the field. The fact is that complaining on the radio sometimes works (or it may look like it does) and until it doesn't anymore, drivers will use it. If there's a chance that it gives you an advantage, you HAVE TO use it, that's how fierce competition works. It's quite the same in football (real football, not the American thing) when players dive and roll on the floor "crying" after any contact.

They could have got to P2 in the constructor's in Silverstone if they had done a 1-2 like they should have. I actually would have preferred if that happened even as an RB fan because the idea of the fastest car STILL having a lot more wind tunnel time than RB worries me. If they remain 3rd, it does not accurately represent their actual car's performance and treats them as having a slow car with extra wind tunnel time.

I honestly believe that Piastri has a higher ceiling than Lando. Oscar's biggest weakness rn is his tire management, which has been improving considerably in the last couple of races. Exactly, and the fact they ask the driver to make the decision for them is ridiculous. The driver doesn't have all the information they have and it isn't the driver's job to make the strategy. It especially affects Lando when he's always hard on himself when he makes the wrong decision. Like his missed win in 2021 when the rain came in on the last lap, he should be ordered and not asked, especially when he doesn't have any of the data the team can see.

I understand what you are trying to say but you cherry pick the facts. There was a discussion between Lando and his engineer on tyres His engineer said we prefer softs. So Lando agreed. However they never told Lando that Hamilton was on softs. I think if he had known that he would have changed to medium. Then the engineer said mediums to cover Max and he has just put on hard or Softs to cover Lewis. Lando wanted to win the race so he was being told that Softs were the option. Secondly Lando eased off after Max got past to save his tyres and he was not bothered that Oscar was catching as he could have sped up at any time to ensure the position. Oh In the Australian GP you do realise that Lando before the last lap George shunt was a clear 12 secs ahead of Piastri fully justifying the swap. When the swapped Landos tyres were much younger and he was being held up.

McLaren is not used to being a contender, which also includes the drivers. Max and Lewis can make calls because they have a better understanding of the car and the track, and knows when they ego their strategists, it’s because they know they can pull it out of their ass 90% of the time. Norris doesn’t have that understanding, and McLaren doesn’t understand that either. The dude hasn’t been fighting at the front until the latter half of the 2023 season. How would he know? Oscar is honestly in a better position since he is getting a title contender car almost right off the bat, making it easier for him to understand how the car plays, albeit not to the degree he should ego his strategy constantly. They are trying to punch up faster than they are prepared for and are costing them a lot. If it was not for the fact that Max is the only real point scorer of Redbull, they would be screwed BIG TIME.

I feel like part of the issue for McLaren is that they can’t simply say they need the team to take more initiative in making a decision. Cause you can only go back to the Dutch GP of last year where Lando and Oscar were both begging to be put on the Inters but the team was saying the slicks were competitive while Perez was literally flying through the field. That was another massive strategy blunder that came from the team not listening to their drivers feedback from the track. So the team has had incidents both ways either making a mistake listening to the driver or not listening to them when they should have. They simply fail to identify when they need to make the call vs do what the driver recommends

18:38 I had been saying the same thing, i think Lando is pushed into 'desperation' by Oscar, while also trying to give his everything to catch up or keep Max at bay. The crash last time i think could've been prevented as well if Oscar was doing a Checo and dangled at the back and not being any threat. But Oscar is right behind him, so Lando wants to keep his position no matter what AND push forward to get Max, which eventually puts him in a very tight spot, which he obviously is not ready to handle yet. The fact that Oscar went for the Mediums right away, while Lando was still convinced that the Softs were the best, and "covering Lewis" (which i think was a mistake anyway, because you want to overtake, not cover, but okay), the team should've intervened and put the Mediums on. He could've overtaken Lewis, which meant that Max had to battle Lewis and Lando for the win, but with Lando probably having a bigger margin than Lewis did at the end, plus still having more pace in the tyres as opposed to the worn Softs at the end. Lando and McLaren really messed up, and Oscar is just like: "Ah well, disappointed, but eh, better luck next time eh?.", McLaren should be grateful that he isn't making headlines, because Zak could.. or rather should have his hands full with his own team. btw, do you scoop the litterbox from the ladder, or do you take it down, and also, does the cat climb the ladder as well? If so, i'd like to see a cat-cameo!

This comment is in no way meant to be a slur in any direction, the margins are slight after-all... I wonder if on balance Lando has a little more 'talent' and Oscar a little more 'smarts'. Enough of a difference that the drivers need to be treated differently: "Lando, we're going to..." vs "Oscar, what do you want to..." Nico - I've said it before - the most underrated driver of a generation, a result of his size being a big handicap under previous rules.

His race engineer came over the radio and framed question like this “Do you want softs to cover Hamilton or Mediums to cover Max” If that’s the way it’s framed, obviously he will say softs because he wants to go for the win and he doesn’t have the data in front of him. Any half decent strategy would of told him medium is the best tire and that’s that.

Different track, different temperatures, different setup and the medium in Austria was the C4 compound while in Silverstone it was the C2 compound. Why did they even offer the soft to Lando? They had the stats and knew the medium was best for those amount of laps. Saying to him “Soft to cover off Hamilton” was dumb. He was forced to make a split second decision which should have been decided by the pit. Lando probably didn’t know Hamilton was only on Soft, because they had no Mediums.

One of the biggest things that has earned you my respect is the fact that you are so clear in your allegiance to McLaren and in your support of Piastri yet, you show zero bias in the way you deliver your content. You’re even keeled across the board and that is one of the most difficult aspects of producing content. Your content is fair and balanced and I appreciate that more than you know. I used to really enjoy your channel but the bias is getting too much. I’m a McLaren fan and cheer for both drivers but this narrative you seem intent on going on is putting me right off. I will preface my comments by saying I agree McLaren strategy was all wrong this weekend but a few points concerning this video. 1. Using Horner to make your point. Just ewww as a guy for all he’s been accused of and of course he’s going to make a dig at the closest challengers. 2. Go back and listen to Oscar’s radio in the lead up to the swap for inters. He says it’s nearly time but when pit wall query he himself says they should stay out as long as they can. Oscar is not infallible in all this. I agree there are laps where Oscar was faster in the wet but not to the same extent as Lewis over George. Oscar had the benefit of following Lando and seeing where the new braking zones were. Commentary were at pains to say the first driver on the road is at a much bigger disadvantage. 3. Using the overall race pace graphic is a fallacy. This graphic is skewed by the final stint of both drivers on different tyres. Which I may add you demonstrated by explaining the final stint was 7 tenths faster for Oscar which then wipes the deficit from before which accounts for the 1 tenth overall. He’s only on average quicker due to that final stint of 7 tenths a lap. I don’t understand how you don’t see the maths in that. 4. Insinuating Lando would purposefully crash with Oscar. I’m sorry stop calling yourself a McLaren fan. You have used stats to suit your narrative. Like I said before your bias is reaching so much. Data is only as good as the person interpreting it. Without the mistakes in strategy from the pit wall, it was a 1-2 with Lando leading. There simply wasn’t going to be a scenario like you described of team orders. As a McLaren fan you’ve really put me off and I don’t think I can keep watching which is a shame.

I saw a video with the radios and lando was asked about both the soft and mediums and if he wanted to cover Hamilton or Verstappen. Lando then said he wanted to cover Hamilton but at the end he also said mediums would be fine and the Engineer said softs :P The issue certainly is that communication and reading their own data, if they saw the mediums were the best and fastest, that is what they should have gone with.

What kind of irks me is that it was pretty clear from the get go that Oscar was the quicker car that day. He was able to not only follow Lando through the Mercedes pair but then also close the gap to Lando himself. And thinking back to Monza and Hungary 2023, Mclaren pitted Lando first because he was 'supposedly' quicker than Oscar, thereby undercutting Oscar to come in front. It truly baffles me then, in this instance, why they didn't even consider pitting Oscar, or even Lando first, thus staggering the pitstops and avoiding the whole double stack dilemma itself. To me it seems that their strategy is focused on optimizing one driver, rather than trying to get the best for both drivers. As you mentioned in Jeddah, they also messed up Lando's strategy while Oscar, who was ahead, did not have his race compromised. If McLaren want to win any championship, they need to figure out how to handle two drivers who are able to fight at the front. Otherwise, expect friction, frustration, and contempt to happen - not only within the drivers but with the public as well, because what happened to Oscar at Silverstone was unacceptable and frankly embarrassing for a front-running team.
