You won't believe this but I will amuse you regardless, I actually saw them perform this song just after the release of this album when this song was actually a hit on the mainstreaming channels... well anyways, I happened to be in the arena where a "girlfriend" of Jame's and her father happened to be attending since this was Grand Rapids Michigan in the year 2003. December 9th to be precise. Look it up.... So! Anyhow, I met her and her father and got to ask some personal questions about "the man" and also got to tell them to tell him that he had a really huge fan out in the crowd and to see if he would allow me to come back stage with them because at intermission they were to go backstage and I was being rude and asking them how they were getting to go back stage. Well needless to say, they came out after intermission and he made some strange physical gesticulations in my direction and I swear we made eye contact as I held my hat in the air as to gesticulate back in that direction "hats off, to 'the man'." Then he screamed that last part all the way up until what you declared as the best part in the song. Which, I am not arguing that point only pointing out that if you heard that scream he did that night all the way up until that next part in the song you might agree that would be technically the best part (live) is all I'm sayin'

Maynard's awesome body movements are a testament to his absolute mastery as a vocalist in all aspects. If you look at his body (Or if you have ever sang with a backline behind you as punchy/fucking godly & beautifully loud as TooL/APC is..) you'll see he's projecting and moving on certain phrasings or screams to gather and feel for the right placements within his body for projection and he also balances himself in his own nessicary way's to absolutely fucking belt it over all that power.. Maynard is truly one of the best Rock frontmen ever to front the mic. People often forget Vocals is a body instrument, not a throat instrument. His movements signify his care, training and passion for the song and the music over everything and anything else. He is A true artist and master musician. Z.
@Nopaants2 жыл бұрын
Yet many of his movements are counter to an optimal vocal posture. Hunching over the mic is a perfect example of this yet his voice is still commanding and powerful.

@@Nopaants I huntch over on some phrases to “visually” get the resonating placement above my mouth (Mask/Nose/cheeks). The songs on Thirteenth Step for the most part are about the various processes of addiction, behavioral addictions, chemical addictions, and each song is kind of sung from a different perspective. I have a lot of friends who've gone through a lot of these situations. Some of the songs are sung from the perspective of the actual drug, from the perspective of someone who has realized that they have an issue or a problem, also from the perspective of a person who realizes that if they don't do something they're going to die, a song from the perspective of a person who is in denial about a loved one, dying right before their eyes. And in the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off."[10]
