@Poose McPoose Very sad indeed. I don't live in the UK, but I feel for you. I get that a rider could get fined if he/she pulls a wheelie in front of the cops, but nothing so drastic. I even think that this kind of exercise with the clutch should be manatory in riding schools. It helps you feel and understand a lot of things. After that, a brain is needed of course.

Exactly what they say here, just start off by tightening your clutch and only tap or "bang" the clutch with 2 fingers and low rpms in first gear and slowly work your way up the rev band at first u wont even bring it up it will just be "jerks" so u can feel it. then as u get better u will bring it up. and if u r kinda scared make sure to pinch the tank with your thights so u dont slide back.

@arielatomhc: Covering the back brake is a great idea if you plan to do a sustained wheelie, or want to clutch far enough to approach the BP (Balance Point). However the occasional street clutch pop shouldn't get you anywhere near BP unless you over-revved badly before releasing the clutch.

if you drop the front end from a wheelie you'll need new fork seals eventually. the trick is to roll back on the throttle when you're letting it down so that it slows the descent. this video is cool though :)

Great video! Most videos I see on here that describe clutching it up are demonstrated on 600's (give or take). This is one of few I've seen on a 1000cc which show step by step. I too, like the instructor in this particular video ride an R1 ('08) and I can "power" it up fine in 1st but as the vid says, going a bit fast to begin with! I want to clutch em up!!! Anyone out there know: What gear is he clutching it up in, 1st or 2nd? And what RPM in that gear (on average) do you "slip it" up to on a

i had a ninja 250. about the same hp (prob a bit less). it is definately possible. try different body positions ( it is natural to put your weight forward when you feel the front get light, try fighting that urge becasue leaning forward will not let you get it up.) you'll need to use the clutch with your bike. (i stilll do with my triumph 955i) - and of course only do this while you are in complete control of your surroundings (scrace parking lot) cover your rear brake

i grew up on trials bikes they are easy to wheelie but a road bike is a lot different ,it is the speed that is the big difference,on my gas gas i am in top gear only doing about 30/35 mph and can wheelie for a couple of hundred yards on my gsxr 750 i struggle to do more than 30 /40 yards ,it is the speed and the snatchy throttle response that makes me struggle, but keep practising and take your time

I think a large vtwin is a good wheelie bike to learn on. With lots of torque you don't even need to use the clutch.I've tried a short wheelie but don't want to hurt the bike. I've done wheelies on motox bikes 250, 2 stroke and on a 450 4stroke and i've almost fliped them in 4th gear. i'm no good at them but had a go and stayed on em somehow.I'd love to be able to keep it up in controlled manor but don't want to damage machinery in process.

yes mate, you can wheelie a 125cc just as well. the thing about doing it on a lot is if you drop your bike, it might rash some. needless to say; your flesh is much softer than your bike too so make sure you wear some gears. don't try too much too soon. start at 1st gear 4,000 rpm. pull your clutch in without letting off on the throttle, and drop the clutch quickly as if you're pulling a gun's trigger. don't hold the clutch in too long, release fast.

what bike are you riding? it all depends on the bike. the R6 that i had,the one in my picture, i had to wait until 9 or 10k rpm depending on the gear i was in to slip the clutch. you just have to find the right rpm on your bike

The point in first gear when you're normally riding and would shift into second without looking at your rpms is generally where you want to pull the clutch in and re apply rapid acceleration

I just sold my bike and can't really practice right now until i get my new one, but I'm interested to know if when you 'pop the clutch' do you keep your hand on the throttle for a couple seconds or do you take it off immediately? Also at what rev. point do I pop the clutch? and if I was going 60-70mph will popping the clutch at that speed work (given I'm most likely at 3rd gear or 2nd if I'm stretching it). Thanks

Hold throttle, clutch, will build rpms, then essentially the jolt front higher rpm as clutch is released is what gives it lift, then its just throttle control and balance.

@arielatomhc he said that they have to cover the clutch. when you action the clutch while doing a wheelie, the rpm lowers to the minimum so the back tire slows down. that's the engine brake, which acts like a back brake. kinda...

When he says a little "flick the clutch very lightly" he means pull it in let the revs increase then release it, this will be a bit of a jolt but it should raise the front end. If you plan on doing this, I suggest you start off with a VERY small flick and increase it from there, so the first couple of times you may not get the front end up, its better then laying on the floor with your bike flying off down the road and crashing without you.

@CallMePenny300

Only way to wheelie Ninja 250 is with a high clutch drop. You can drop it from 8,000rpms on a launch, or coasting under 5mph, you can drop it from 6-7000, just have to hold the throttle full out after that. Try a little at a time and lean on the bars so you dont flip it, but with a 40hp bike, its more about balance than any available power. Can be done though. :) Just grab a flat empty lot, warm your tires up (essential) then just play the clutch til she lifts.

Then try to take the top radiator hose off, and fill coolant(fill more water than coolant than usual, since water cools better. But not only water because then it will corrode, and can freeze) till it drips out of the radiator. Then put the radiator hose back on, and fill the tank to the recomended level of coolant and go for a short ride. When you come back, check the lecel of fluid in the system, and if required fill some more. If this does not help you can also change your sparkplugs ........

@sprs747 Doing wheelies can put alot of strain on the chain. As the bike lands, the chain in a way tightens/stretches. This gives the potential for it to actually snap! If this happens it will be taken into the inside of the bike and whip it, causing incredible damage to things like an aluminium frame or just generally the engine. Other things can happen such as the the teeth of the cram shaft ( drive shaft??) can twist!! this happens when popping the clutch.

@sprs747 Well i think that's kindof a misnomer. Going to trackdays (i.e. racing your bike) will cause excessive wear on most of your bike. granted there should be a light disclaimer in general of the added cost of pushing your motorcycle to its full potential, but if you are going to track days, you most likely will be investing close to 800 dollars in protective gear, and more for tires.

I ment just a wheely, so doing it from a standstill still counts as a wheely and that isnt hard to pull off in first, if its a toally stock 50 pulling one in second is hard, but just practice in your first gear and then shift up or just stay in your first, a wheely is a wheely no matter how fast your going :)
