I think originally, there were several emeralds on different locations, of various colors and effects, some games showed 8 or even 16. But as they started progressed the lore, they simplified it to have always been 7 that have moved around across all these locations.

If we want to use the idw argument starline had all seven chaos emerald in forces and yet during thoses event on cutscenes while fighting infinite he performs chaos snap. In a earlier issue of idw shadow performs chaos snap when teleporting to mr tinkier and he had no chaos emerald since starline had all seven. He also used chaos spears several times throughout the book with no chaos emerald in his position. Shadow does not need a chaos emerald to use his chaos power however you can argue chaos control is something different so all his other chaos abilities from snap,spear,and blast he can use without a emerald but he requires a emerald for a full chaos control.

Shadow because he is made with black dooms DNA is able to use SOME chaos moves without a chaos emerald ie: chaos snap, chaos spear, and chaos boost. Big moves like chaos control(obviously) and arguably chaos blast, need an emerald. Remember the inhibitior rings on his wrists and ankles are meant to control and dampen the chaos energy he has.

It’s wasn’t the first time though how it relates to the Gaia energy is still a mystery but the chaos emeralds are guided by the will and intent of the user such as in Sonic Adventure when Chaos turned into Perfect Chaos Sonic used the positive energy as Super Sonic to neutralize the negative energy that Chaos was using something similar was done in Sonic Rush when the Egg Salamander was powered by both set the Sol and Chaos emeralds despite being drained were revived by the positive intent and force of Blaze and Sonic Now again how it relates to the Gaia energy it is still a mystery though it’s more of a question of what was the original purpose of the emeralds and Sonic Frontiers did reveal at least 2 secrets about the emeralds 1 the emeralds _seemingly_ aren’t native to Sonic’s world and even though the ancient possessed them they didn’t create the emeralds and 2 the Master Emerald was what called them(the emeralds) to earth to begin with for a still unknown reason with implying that the master emerald is native to the earth far predating any known civilization that had possessed the chaos emeralds such as the echidna and this is just my speculation but since both light and dark Gaia allegedly existed during the dawn of time (being manifestations of destruction and rebirth incarnate) but their powers resonate with the emeralds through the Gaia temples despite the chaos emeralds coming from the ancients which has me thinking the _could’ve_ came from earth but because of their powers were fought over by species aware of their existence like the Black Arms and the Babylonians ended up in the hands of the ancients the emeralds or specifically the master emerald could be of divine origin as there is a missable line of dialogue between Sage and Amy speaking of the symbol that appears in frontiers at certain story points with Sage revealing it’s meant to represent the god of the ancients which “may still exist somewhere” could also be related to the emeralds if not the be the source of them possibly setting the stage for a sequel to frontiers to expand more on it but this is just a theory of mine

Shadow can use *some* chaos abilities without and emerald. Chaos snap is one of them. In his game and 06, Shadow is using chaos snap before he ever gets one emerald, before he's even near enough to one. Even generations has him using these abilities. Maybe he's using the emeralds that Sonic's holding, but that's unclear. Idw too has been warfing Shadow for a *hot* minute, so he's not as strong as he's been shown before

Interesting fact:Super Emeralds HAD appeared after Sonic 3 and Knuckles in Sonic Adventure. On the altar in past emeralds are BIGGER than in other cutscene and in final picture after Super Sonic story(if im not wrong) where Chaos sits on master emerald and emeralds on background ALSO bigger than normal chaos emeralds. Did you know that originally each island had it's own set of chaos emeralds. That's why in sonic 1 there were 6 emeralds. In some of the game gear games there were 5. And in sonic spinball there were 16. That's why they all look different and in Aosth im pretty sure there were like 4 or 5 different emeralds as well.

4:37 I'm going to have to hard disagree here since in Shadow's own game he uses Chaos Control multiple times to reach Black Doom, who has all the Chaos Emeralds at the time. Also, Shadow can apparently use Chaos Control all the same w/o a Chaos emerald in SA2 in that final race against Sonic with 6 in the Ark and 7th with Eggman. Not to mention Shadow states he could still do Chaos Control after giving his emerald in Emerl as long as he kept Maria in his heart in Sonic Battle (and "Chaos is power.. power enriched by the heart" -Tikal the Echidna). There's quite few contradicts to statements in the data books. Also, the fact that line from the IDW comic goes out it's way to say 'Shadow doesn't have enough energy to perform Chaos Control without an emerald' rather than straight up say 'Shadow can't perform Chaos Control without an emerald' says to me that he can do it alone if need be, but it's just better to have Chaos Emerald because it's essentially a limitless battery of chaos energy. Also, you'd think if Rouge knew her co-worker/friend who she's worked with for so long couldn't do Chaos Control without a Chaos Emerald, why would she ask if Shadow could do such a thing in the first place??? She'd know if Shadow had a Chaos Emerald, too, because she's kind of obsessed with them as a jewel thief and Shadow would tell her. The only reason I would see Rouge's question NOT imply any what I said, is if the writers used at as essentially a rhetorical question to slip in some dialouge about Shadow's abilities (which I find unlikely). Either way, Shadow seems to be on the path of attaining Chaos-kenesis after the Eggperial City storyline, because those were some wild Chaos Controls he performed CONSECUTIVELY. So that's exciting. Finally, there's Black Doom who has inherit Chaos Control powers (and can do Chaos Control without an emerald as seen in Shadow Generations), but the uses the emeralds amplify those powers (and Shadow has Black Doom's DNA).

By the way, everything IS canon. Sonic boom had this confirmed in an interview. All of these separate continuities take place in different dimensions. Funny how you brought up battle but failed to mention that Shadow challenged Emeral without an emerald and used the memories of Maria as his power source. He needs an emerald to use chaos control specifically. Chaos snap and the other chaos powers he can use without one. Even in shadow 05 you can use chaos blast without having an emerald equipped but need one for chaos control. He does have innate chaos energy

The hyper form already exists in the Archie comics with hyper tails so if hyper tails exists and hyper was formed the same way as ultra then hyper can be accessed with 1 super emerald as well the difference I think would be potential “edit” if both sonic and tails absorbed 1B power rings and sonic went ultra then there must’ve been more than 1B for tails to go hyper meaning hyper is formed through less power rings then ultra meaning it’s less powerful
