Previously, when a movie came out it wouldn't be available for about 5 months when it would then be available for purchase on dvd or blue ray or whatever. Now it's on disney+ within like 6 weeks and if you already pay for it then it's basically free. So for me, I was more keen to rematch in the cinema whereas now I'm more inclined to wait for my 2nd viewings to be on disney

@4321beatles2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, Have you considered creating a set of "Most Profitable Movies" charts, starting in 2023 (or maybe retroactively creating ones for 2022)? Following the rule-of-thumb of the estimated budget ×2 for marketing, you can create two charts: 1. Looking at which movies are the most profitable once they pass their respective threshold of that estimated budget ×2; i.e. just the sheer dollar amount 2. Looking at which movies are the most profitable based on the ratio of (budget ×2):revenue. This would allow for smaller movies to be more fairly compared to bigger movies. So if a movie is made for $100,000 and makes $1,000,000, this is a profit of 400% once you factor in the budget ×2 after the movie makes its money back. Compared to a movie which was made for $1,000,000 and makes $4,000,000, it was "only" made 100% of its profit. The second movie was more profitable looking at the total dollars, but arguably the first movie was a better "investment." These charts could bring another dimension to the amount of money a movie makes at the box office. Love the show and hope all is well!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Academy and what can change. There seems to be less and less interest in it every year and that's a shame, though I wouldn't want to see them giving Oscars as popularity awards to very mediocre popcorn movies who are awarded well enough at the box office. They seem to be going backwards, eliminating key awards from the broadcast, which begs the question "What's the point in an awards show at all if you're cutting some of the most crucial ones?" If the point is ratings, I'd rather see a show that focuses more on a celebration of film and filmmaking than handing out trophies. It can still shine a spotlight on lesser known great films, while also acknowledging the biggest films of the year.

I agree that several characters did not get the right amount of screentime), it simply lost a lot of its novelty. The change in median grosses from phase 3 to phase 4 makes perfect sense to me. Phase 4 was the culmination of a decade long build up. Phase 4 is a rebuild phase, the beginning of another ramp up, AND, phase 4 rolled out during a pandemic and the explosion of streaming. It's primarily ahead of phase 2, which is great, considering everything. Phase 4 production budgets are considerably higher than phase 2. That's to be expected, considering the amount of special effects included in the movies, , as things went more cosmic, inflation, as well as how much it cost to film during the pandemic. I think they should dial back on the spectacle nature of the movies (potentially bringing down the budget without a strong dependence on special effects) and focus more on character and story development.

Defanitly a great break down of the mcu statistically for phase 4 and its preceeding years. The only caviat i would add is not really one of statistics they still had the high budget trying to introduce the unkowns onto the line up but they did so without a strong narrative thread building to something. That i feel is one of the biggest reasons it was able to be stalled as a lot pf people had viewed end game as a ending point. Lots of great data points as always for the rest of the charts...shame sonic 2 is not likely to see out the year chart would have been awesome to see it get that point...but no one can deny it has done very well holding its place against competion no one would have thought possiable at the beginung of the year.

I love learning cool new facts, like that $200,000,000 is actually an 11.1% drop from $180,000,000. (See graphic at 22:30 for more information)

I think they've backed themselves into a corner with these budgets. If they drop them then the spectacle isn't there to get people into the theatre. Especially when they can get plenty of Marvel content without leaving home. They're probably hoping to absorb these losses when the bigger movies come out in phases 5 and 6.

I had no interest initially in She Said because I thought it was a cheap horror movie based on the poster… I was so surprised when someone told me what it was and I was like “oh what, of course I’m going to watch that!”

I'm sorry, I'm from the Netherlands. And I tried googling the definition for 'median', because I've never heard of that word before. But I still don't understand... can someone please explain to me what the difference between 'average' and 'median' is? 😬

The average is when you take all the numbers in a data set, add them together, then divide them by how many numbers you have. So the average of 2, 7, and 9 is 6 (2+7+9=18, 18/3=6). To find the median, you take all the numbers, put them in order, and find the middle value. The median of 2,7, and 9 is 7. The median is useful because you get rid of extremely high or low numbers to see what’s in the middle. The average is useful because it incorporates all values, but can be skewed by an extremely high or low number. Just two different ways to express data sets.

@@DanMurrellMovies Thank you for the explanation Dan! This reminds me of something I once learned in high school, I just can't remember the correct term for it anymore. Never thought I'd need it again! 😅 While I'm at it, long time fan here, and I love your channel. Thank you for all the facts, your opinions and your enthousiasm over all these years 😊

I swear when I first saw the trailer for the GOTG holiday special I thought it was just a joke. it took me way too long to realize this was a real thing.

Confused by the MCU budget by phase chart. In phase 2, you had the median budget as $180k (a 5.9% increase over the $170k phase 2), and then you had the phase 4 median as $200k, but marked it as a drop of 11.1% from the $180k of phase 3.
