To be clear I had a good bit of fun with phase 4. There's some great moments, but as a whole, phase 4 was a frustrating experience that failed to generate excitement and momentum for the MCU as a whole.

I Think Another Huge Problem With Phase 4 From The Beginning Has Been The Question Everyone Involved In Planning & Production Has Asked Is "Okay Well Now What Do We Do?" Covid Put Everything Back, So Originally Loki Was Supposed To Be Complete, So That Story Could Have Been More Connected With Doctor Strange, But It's Not Done. Even With Doctor Strange & Spider-Man, We Were Supposed To Get Very Different Stories, But Then That Was All Tossed And We Got Multiverse Instead Of More Compelling Character Studies. Plus The Sony Split Happened, And Then Spiderman Wouldn't Delay So They Had To Switch The Order Of The Movies So The Stories Had To Be Changed Again. So Instead Of Villains Coming From Different Universes Beccause Of The Effects Of Doctor Strange's Movie And America Chavez Summoning Tobey & Andrew, We Have "Geniouses Be Idiots, Screw Up Spell, Ned Says He Can Do Magic." Thor 4 Was Supposed To Come After GOTG3, Then The Stuff With James Gunn Happened, So The Story Built Up Was Tossed And Altered. Covid Also Caused An Entire Plot From F&TWS To Get Tossed Which Could Have Helped The Show Greatly. And Of Course There Was The Loss Of The Star Of Black Panther, Which Left Things In A Difficult Place For Them. Even If This Movie Works, You Wonder If Anything After Will As Well.

Personally, i think Phase 4 had many big issues, and one of them is the risks they took. Or more fittingly, the lack of there of. Phase 4 has been MCU at its most experimental, TV shows, a bit bloodier at times, but they don't fully commit to it, which feels kinda scummy. You have some promising starts like Wandavision, but let down by the studio wanting a huge 3rd act

Lack there of? Phase 4 is one of marvel’s riskiest phases. They introduced tv shows and further more tv specials in this phase. The released all of the movies tv shows and tv specials in a just 2 years They ventured into new genres e.g. horror in doc strange 2, layer sitcom in she hulk, classic sitcom in the beginning of WandaVision They gave director’s more creative freedom e.g. Sam Rakim,waititi, GAO, Crettin They did all these things. This is the reason I think phase 4 was not the best because they took too much risks which backfired Siuuuu If you came this far down I just wanted to say hi.

You sound like a battered spouse. Phase 4 was really Phase 1 of the new policy that favors social justice over quality. It's not going to get better, they are doubling down on it. Warner Bros sees the writing on the wall. They acknowledge that this direction isn't making them money. There is a reason why Spider-man (No Way Home) was as successful as it is. It went back to what people want in a movie...escapism. Everyone is tired of politics in every facet of their entertainment and studios destroying criticism using the race/sexist card. Make good movies and it doesn't matter who is in it, or what it's about. Disney has no intention making great movies, just products they know people will buy no matter what. Stop expecting it to change when people like you have been burned so much, but still go back for more.

To me, the greatest issue with Phase Four was how messy and yes, unfocused it was. It experimented with a lot of different things in a largely inconsistent way, it had no overall storyline that each movie was contributing towards, and the tone and style was all over the place due to how different the movies were.

@@terrorfromthedeep5587 I meant in terms of tone, style etc. Yes each movie had MCU formula which was often a fault in them, but the genres, tones etc varied quite a lot and it often didn't work because of how inconsistent it was. They did one with martial arts, then horror, then straight-up comedy film directly after it. Not to mention they did a "sitcom" TV show just before what was meant to be an emotional tribute film

Yeah I hope phase 5 can bounce back cause I mostly disliked everything from phase 4. Not only was it unfocused but I felt it was quantity over quality, unfinished CGI (like phase's 1 and 2 CGI look better) or too much CGI, not taking it's self more seriously (before the MCU was more serious and they had a variety of different tones in the TV shows pre Disney plus), not breaking enough away from the formula and in general just not being very good. I think Kevin Feige is really spread thin too and rushing things out. Maybe someone needs help Kevin a bit and I think someone needs to tell him to let directors and writers be themselves by making things feel more original. Also they really need to take their time with movies and TV shows moving forward cause it's obvious things were rushed 80% of the time in terms of the CGI to the writing

I agree with basically everything in this video. I like how you pointed out the different ways variances are explained too. Before I watched Multiverse of Madness, I saw a movie reviewer (he hadn't seen the movie yet) say that before watching it, people should watch WandaVision, What If, and Loki. After I watched the movie, I told people that WandaVision is definitely important, What If is helpful but not very important, but that they should specifically not watch Loki if they haven't already since it makes you believe one thing and then you seen something else entirely.

I enjoyed the ride phase 4 brought us on. For the past 2 years, we've had a lot of great experiences watching the TV shows every week or going crazy at the theaters. But as soon as the hype dies down, phase 4 is cripplingly flawed and is easily the worst phase of the MCU. They've had some great content, but getting 18 MCU things in just 22 months is a bit too much. Still would rewatch all of them.

Wandavision-Fantastic Hawkeye-Best MCU show yet. Black widow- second must underrated MCU movie. She Hulk- just like the comic and quick and fun with a lot leading to the future of the franchise. Shang-Chi is mid tier and made me want to see more of the character. No way Home-Amazing. Moon Knight-creative and dark as it should be. Loki-well done and extremely important.

I was a freshman in highschool when the first iron man came out. I got to experience the entire saga with my friends all together in one place. It was so fun for me and everyone else when a new movie came out to get together at the cinema and experience it. It continued into our years of college for phase 2 and even after graduation for phase 3. We made sure to view the new movies together. When Endgame came and wrapped it all together I really felt like an era came to a close. We were blessed to have this saga happen when it did for us and we were able to experience it together. For me Endgame was the perfect close to the saga. All the heroes we grew up with had their stories wrapped up. I'm fulfilled, satisfied, and, quite fatigued tbh. Whatever happens next will happen but I lost touch with it all. For me Endgame was the endgame.

As much as I am excited for future projects like Ant Man Quantumania and Secret Wars, Phase 4 has made me extremely worried about the future of the MCU. I can genuinely see it dying out in a few years if they keep on pumping out loads of low quality content that is targeted towards specific groups of people.

It was certainly up and down, but two of the films came into my top 10 of the MCU as a whole. :) I really enjoyed many of the TV shows, but I do think some of them would have worked better as films like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (but with better writing and more interesting villains). Black Widow should have been a film that was made WAY earlier. Also I think Moon Knight (as much as I liked it) should have been an extended series with better focus rather than being globe traveling. But there have been great things in it.

Interesting video. I enjoyed your breakdown and arguments being made. I think your point on quantity over quality is valid. Also, the unfocused nature of Phase 4 gives it a directionless feel. Those are valid arguments to justify the overall feeling about Phase 4. Some additional points/counterarguments. You stated people will start tuning out MCU content due to saturation. I'm not sure that's the case. Remember in Phases 1 - 3, there was Marvel Television and Netflix Marvel. I would argue there was WAY more overall content during Phases 1 thru 3, but it became quickly apparent that the TV and Netflix properties wouldn't cross into the films- so it was easy to tune out the TV and Netflix stuff. Phase 4 has much less content compared to the other Phases, but now it's under the oversight of Feige, as opposed to before. I'd also argue that Phase 3, with the Endgame climax, was always going to be a tough act to follow. I agree that Phase 4 could have had better focus and perhaps in hindsight, if these various characters that have been introduced begin to interact, we'll see Phase 4 in a different light. Overall, I agree with your point - I still really enjoy the MCU - I'm still entertained - but it has been underwhelming with some films/shows.

I agree with you on a lot of your points. Most of these projects are fine enough and I enjoy them more or less while I'm watching but I don't get excited like I used to. I really enjoyed Black Panther:Wakanda Forever when I saw it Saturday and I knew it would be good but I just didn't care as much about it. I wasn't really looking forward to that day like I used to. I used to do MCU watchthroughs a few years ago when we just had Endgame and I just don't know if I can see myself watching through all the phase 4 projects again.

Given how good phase 3 was there was really only one direction to go. I can say that I liked more things released then I disliked I admittedly haven’t seen everything in phase 4 yet. But I think the Covid pandemic certainly threw a monkey wrench no one was expecting and hopefully they got a few things ironed out going forward. I’m not looking for perfection I’m just looking for fun.

For me my 3 favorite movies from Phase 4 were Wakanda forever and Shang Chi and No way home and my favorite tv show was definitely Moon Knight Werewolf by Night was spectacular and it was refreshing too but yeah Phase 4 is very loose in structure or lack there of but i’m still willing to stick with it. In my opinion after Endgame the MCU should’ve went on a bit of a hiatus and given the fans a breather because Endgame was so satisfying.

For me the Mcu is finished. It ended with Avengers Endgame with Black widow and Ironman being killed of and Cap getting his farewell. These new shows and movies aren’t horrible the sequels to doctor Strange black panther and spiderman are good and Marvel studios are still Marvel Studios but I don’t see another Team up movie and the Mcu era ended with Endgames Phase 3. But i am still excited for more content from Marvel.

While I love the different projects, I do wonder where some characters will return at. I do like while the multiverse is the main overall thing for the universe, we have little things building up, Val and the thunderbolts on a world level, the young avengers/Champions (which is currently done the most barebones unfortunately), the cosmic side, and the street level stuff which I'm honestly most excited for and think it's being given good focus with Daredevil kinda being the thread.

I don’t really get all of the Phase 4 hate with the MCU. Sure it is unfocused, but I appreciate how experimental that it is. They did a great job introducing new characters. I think it has done a really good job laying the foundations for phase 5 and 6. In terms of the quality of the projects, the only one that I think was outright bad was Eternals. They only ones that I thought were okay, were Thor 4, Black Widow, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk. Everything else in the Phase is Good to Excellent.

Like you said, they tried to break the mold mightily. I like Mission Impossible, Rocky and James Bond but let's not pretend the stories are innovative and bold. Marvel didn't rest on their laurels. I looked forward to She Hulk more than Andor weekly honestly.

Falcon/Winter Soldier was 6 episodes, about 40 minutes of content without credits, the length of No Way Home. They aren't 6 hours of content. They are all movie length bits broken into episodes (sans the upcoming Daredevil). The thing that seems obvious is that there are two directions they are going in. The Young Avengers (Kate Bishop, etc) on one side, which Disney+ is setting up heavily, and Multiverse/Kang lead ins to come. Loki introduced it, but it was not going to amp up until now.

Marvel Phase 4 was interesting for me. Yes I understand it was all over the place. But some of the movies/shows I actually enjoyed more than others. While I did enjoy the introduction of a few key new characters, the only ones I didn't quite get were the ones involving Moon Knight and She Hulk because they didn't go well for me. And I also liked that there have been some characters introduced from other Marvel movies (Outside the MCU) with the Spider-Man series of the past. And I liked the whole Multiverse concept that they are going for. And I liked that Phase 4 ended on such an emotional level with Wakanda Forever. I appreciate that there were a few setbacks in this Phase 4. And it was overall okay for me. Hopefully Phase 5 can bump up the excitement with more Multiverse elements to go with the overall story.

I quite enjoyed phase 4, even it's weaker entries. I just think after endgame everyone expected things to continue the "bigger and better" formula, but that's not realistic bc endgame was so big and all encompassing. So we went back to solo films and introductions. It also suffered from COVID so, I try to be a little easier on it than most people are.

As frustrating as Phase 4 was, I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy a good amount of the content that came out of it. I wish it was more focused and the criticisms are valid although repetitive. I have faith in Phase 5

I'd like to add another point. Each Phase 4 show/movie has literally turned into a commercial for a future show or movie. One off characters like Agatha, the mute girl with one leg, and Taskmaster are now getting a new show and it is getting ridiculous. Not to mention, every show or movie has introduced a new character to be used in an upcoming show.

I didn’t mind phase 4 it does have its downs but mostly I would say good things came out of it. We got black panther wakanda forever and Spider-Man no way home which were amazing movies. We were wolf by night and multiverse of madness to add to a horror theme and we flipped with projects like I am groot and wanda vision which were a little more light hearted but still good. Moon knight and Hawkeye are extremely underrated and Shang Chi was one of the best marvel movies in my opinion. Falcon and the winter soldier and eternals had lows but overall I would still say were entertaining. Thor love and thunder and she hulk weren’t great but all the other phases had lows such as Thor 2 the Incredible Hulk and captain marvel. So overall I enjoyed it

comet star they can’t do the X Men much worse than FOX lol. Anyone who’s actually read X Men comics knows that the vast majority of those movies (with a couple exceptions) failed in doing the X Men justice. They’re basically Wolverine and friends lol. Cyclops should be the Captain America of the X Men, a very clear leader. Not a second fiddle to Logan

People keep saying that phase 4 was good but unfocused. But that is what Marvel was kinda going for. They were trying to tell individual stories that felt different from each other. Now sometimes they connected like with WadnaVision and MoM, but mostly they were trying to tell self contained stories that would eventually cross over with each other down the line

Maybe it helps I didn't get fully on board with the MCU until Phase 3, but I've always seen the franchise as an all-you-can-eat buffet situation where you take some and leave the rest. Therefore, I guess I had no problems accepting Phase 4, even if I would still consider it a step down from Phase 3.

I agree that phase 4 as a whole was very messy and there was a shift to quantity over quantity which overall hurt the overall connectivity of the verse. In previous phases I never missed a movie because it always was helped and made me super invested into the lore. I am going to see black panther wakanda forever and I have hear lots of good things about so I'm excited and I have planned to watch your spoiler review after. I do however have lots of hope for the next two phases of the multiverse saga and I still believe the MCU will comeback very strong to end this saga.

I think what phase 4 is lacking is a team up movie. The Avengers was the movie that really made the MCU great and phase 4 mainly featuring solo films/shows stops phase 4 from reaching that level of greatness.

I totally agree with you Sean, this Phase has made me not that excited for the MCU because it feels like it doesn't have a direction whereas with the other phases they were building up to Thanos and had an epic pay off. Phase 4 doesn't feel like it's building up to anything exciting and it's missing that star power that Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans brought to the franchise.

Phase 4 was great as a comic fan, I've gotten to see a lot of characters that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. It's just disjointed, there doesn't seem to be a central theme or plot line. It's just a lot of "boom here's a badass new character and they're doing things"
