They just need to slow the f--- down and get the scripts right. They're so determined to stick to their schedule that they're not giving the movies the care that they need on the script side. They have to keep that schedule, that machine, moving on a certain schedule, regardless of whether they have the scripts or not. It shows the flaw in the interconnectedness of the MCU: if your primary concern is keeping the schedule, then it's not the scripts. This actually demonstrates why Agents of SHIELD basically cut ties with trying to tie in to the movies at a certain point. They couldn't do what they wanted to do with the show because they were having to pause to tie in to the movies, and adjust to what they were doing. After Age Of Ulton, they basically said, "Bye," spent some time in season three trying to find their own footing, and then started running at a full sprint with season four. Just _slow_ the _f--- down_ .
@Coolcoolcooldude

I think they are doing that. I heard they just moved some D+ shows into next year. Secret Invasion, Xmen 97, and Loki s2 are for sure coming out this year. Maybe What If s2 will come out this year. With Bob Igor back, I think Marvel will tone down the volume on content.

Dan, I’m really glad you don’t rush to compete with everyone else trying to get box office results in asap. There’s nothing I can get from those reports that I couldn’t learn from seeing a simple list. But you always provide so much more history and context, not to mention delivered with such passion, that there’s no replacement. By not chasing the clicks, your channel doesn’t indulge in the drama and controversies and so you don’t get the same views, but I hope you know how much your audience appreciates you. It’s too bad there’s not a visible meter for that… you win hands down!

The last Ant Man Movie coming off Infinity War only made $622m. I think box office analysts were expecting too much from this movie. If Quantumania makes $600m that's good. Love and Thunder made more money than Ragnarok (minusing China) and people said it was a disaster. The Marvels got out of the way of The Flash, that's all. There was no other MCU movie this year so it made sense to move it to Fall. Sometimes box office analysis can feel like astrology, lol. At the end of the day, Dr Strange 2 and Wakanda Forever did really well in a year that had 4 MCU movies. Only Morbius (which is just MCU adjacent) didn't work.

I know you did this already for the DCU, Dan, but doing a “Where would I take the MCU” video would be fun to see. I don’t think we can understate how profound a loss Chadwick Boseman was on a lot of fronts but for the sake of the MCU it is huge. It felt like he was being built up as an heir apparent to one of the trinity ie Cap, Thor, and Iron Man. So now that he is gone and I don’t think many of the successors can hold a candle to the trinity and him most of these projects feel a little lost. Its starting to feel like we don’t have an anchor to the MCU anymore to see us through.

The most interesting aspect is that you can't blame The Mutliverse for not connecting with audiences. Two of the biggest Phase 4 films were about the multiverse, Spider-Man and Strange. Then the biggest Disney+ show was also about the multiverse, Loki. The reason other projects are floundering has to do with quality. Ant-Man is another casuality.

Curiosity as a sports/wrestling fan…do the Nielsen ratings for streaming take in to account special events? This year won’t matter, but last year I know I watched the Super Bowl on Peacock. And then this week would have been the Royal Rumble on Peacock as the former WWE Network is now part of Peacock. While I know it’s a fairly niche market, I was just curious what a bigger event would draw for Peacock viewership and if that was even something tracked. Thanks for the great work as always!

Unfair to put Black Widow in these second week drop lists because of the simultaneous disney+ and theaters release strategy. Disney set up Black Widow to fail theatrically in order to undercut Scarjo's salary and promote their streaming service.
@1monki
@1monki Жыл бұрын
> in order to undercut Scarjo's salary I seriously doubt that. WB was also doing Day and Date streaming releases on HBO Max. These were attempts to adapt to the covid situation. Hey Dan, I love the road to recovery chart. I was wondering when looking at the weekend from a box office past if it would be insightful to maybe add a 2000 to 2010 line as well. It would give additional context because looking at 90s or 00s weekends (adjusted for inflation) they feel very similar to box office rn. So I was thinking have the last 5 years pre-pandemic been a general upswing in ticket sales and how much difference has the pandemic made in a much larger context. Is this a permanent change or relatively long but temporary one.

Dan talking about AOT's final season cracked me up. You should watch Chainsaw Man. It’s excellent.

Financial success aside, I thought No Way Home was the worst phase 4/5. It was blatant, cold nostalgia bait without heart or vision.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I completely feel the same way. I cringed so hard when the Spidermans got together.

Was not expecting that big a drop. But then there was the siren song of a film about a bear off its butt on cocaine the following week. Actually, I have resisted that song till tonight.

I feel that the most interesting point and possibility that someone made about Creed 3's box office, is that the tepid response to Ant-Man 3 might actually hurt its overall numbers as well. Been checking the showtimes at the big theaters in NYC, specifically Thursday previews, and only half the premium theaters were filled. I have a gut feeling that film is heading for a soft opening. On top of the many hurdles the film has (the drama with Stallone and the rights holder of Rocky) and the somewhat muted response to the film (not critically but in regards to hype and excitement for it).

Something I have noticed about Puss in Boots international box office the last 2 weeks, is that it was supposed to be released on February 17th in Japan, but as of today, in both box office mojo & the numbers it appears as if the film is at $0.

International box office reporting is spotty on both sites, sadly. The latest information I could find is that it's scheduled to come out there on March 17th.

'Multiverse of Madness' and 'Thor: Love and Thunder' soured me. Those were some poorly told and directed movies; wasted characters left and right, unnecessary and absolutely dumb humor, character changes that make no sense and are in stark contrast to who those characters have been, and so on. It doesn't even matter if Quantamania was a masterpiece. I have zero interest in seeing any future Marvel movies in theaters until they can prove that they are better than Phase 4 and so far, shows included, they haven't.

Back in 1996, as a 13-year-old boy, I was living in Stockholm (Sweden) and went to this event when you more or less paid nothing for a full day of movies. So of course, as a movie geek, I saw "Rumble in the Bronx" (amongst other movies). Theater which had roughly 1000 seats was PACKED and the audience went bonkers. Still love the movie and that was kinda when everything Chan started dropping on the VHS scene in Sweden (introduced me to Michelle Yeoh btw), but whoa! The audience experience is something that I will never forget. Usually I want to experience a movie as a movie. But the cheering, laughing from the audience was riveting.

Dan it would be interesting if you did a video called, “What I would do if I was in charge of Hollywood.” What industry practices would you change? What franchises would you produce? Which actors would you pick for various projects? Very broad I realize but it would be fun. Cool charts episode.
