Imo the humor in this one was much better than Thor 4 because this one had funny situations (Modok, holes etc.) vs the characters and heroes constantly cracking jokes in situations where they shouldn’t. This one felt more like classic mcu with humor interlaced with serious things when Thor 4 felt just like a big joke that none of the characters took seriously. There was obviously a tone problem here but it’s in all of the mcu movies and I don’t really have much of an issue with it
@irreplaysable

Yeah I fully agree with you - Thor 4 was definitely much more egregious in this regard, and I thought that this movie had enough moments where they completely stopped with the jokes, in order to make the serious moments land. I understand the critics’ perspectives on the tonal issues, but I can’t say it impeded on my enjoyment as much as it did for them.

Sean absolutely hit the nail on the head. I’m liking Marvel movies less and less because the same problems are in every movie recently(minus Wakanda Forever) and aren’t being fixed. There’s been 18 projects in the last 2 years, and most of them have suffered from this problem. I felt Quantumania was painfully meh and a step down from the first 2

I was pleasantly surprised by the movie when I got out of the cinemas. I thought both visually and on a worldbuilding basis, it was leagues ahead than most of the other MCU output over the past few years. I also did not notice the tonal problem as much as critics did. However, I would say that the one major problem I had with it was the lack of development in the relationship between Hope and Scott. Throughout the movie, they barely even interacted, which felt like an odd juxtaposition with how their dynamic was explored in the previous movies. For me, it just made the “I love you” at the end ring really hollow, particularly when they ended up just making their way back to the real world straight afterwards anyway. Idk - we have seen through WandaVision that Marvel is clearly capable of developing good romances, so it feels like they really dropped the ball with this one.

My Spoiler Thoughts Scott Lang Post-Endgame: Pretty much agree with everything you said. Just wish we spent more time in San Fran before getting thrust in the Quantum Realm. Cassie the Rebel & Genius: I like that Cassie is trying to help everyone. We know that Scott is her hero, she grew up watching him help those in need. They overtly state this in the second movie, she tells her dad that she wants to be his partner. So from her point of view, he's taking the easy way out, he saved the universe and now he's taking it easy. Whereas she sees the world in a different way and is trying to push her dad to be her hero again. Even in the Quantum Realm, she continues to push her dad. He doesn't want to help the Freedom Fighters, he just wants to get out. But she sees people in need. I do wish that this was more in the center of the story, as it gets lost in all the grand scope stuff. And I think this idea would've worked better in a movie outside of the Quantum Realm. As for Cassie being a genius now, I didn't have a problem with it. Again, it was rushed. We just get lines of dialogue of how she's been studying Hank's work and all. It makes sense, I mean look she probably studied a lot during the Blip on how to save her dad. But I wish they would've showed more of her genius rather than just tell us. Everything in San Fran was rushed just to get to the Quantum Realm, and I didn't like that. Inciting Incident: To start off I didn't even connect the dots between the Ant-Man and the Wasp post-credit scene where they send Scott into the Quantum Realm and the inciting incident here until you brought it up. It is very weird. Like Janet was there in the post-credit scene, if she knew how dangerous the Quantum Realm, was why would she sign off on sending Scott there, even if it was for 10 seconds. To me, it just feels like the post-credit scene was necessary for Endgame and they didn't care about it for the context of this movie. I mean yes, Ant-Man and the Wasp was written way before they had any ideas on what this movie would be like, but still, it's frustrating, I feel like this could've been somewhat fixed with a few lines of dialogue, but no, we just have to get straight to the Quantum Realm in this movie Star Wars of the MCU: Not much here. I liked exploring the Quantum Realm. It felt a lot like Star Wars to me, but as soon as we got there, I wish we went with another direction for the third movie of this franchise. It just didn't fit with its predecessors. Everything in the Quantum Realm felt like it would've worked better as a Disney+ show set in between Ant-Man and the Wasp and a proper third Ant-Man movie. Would've it have been ambitious for a Disney+ show, sure. But I don't particularly care. Also, we spent a lot of time just meandering in the Quantum Realm before meeting Kang, but all of the time spent is pointless because it's all just exposition and characters telling us about the impending doom. I wish we could've actually explored the Quantum Realm. Kang: Not much here either. I loved Kang in this movie. Agree with everything said. MODOK: Similarly, MODOK didn't work for me. I think he could've worked better as the main villain of another Ant-Man project later down the road. Just didn't fit with Kang at all. Was gonna touch on all the chapter markers, but I ended up agreeing with you a lot near the end haha. In the end, the movie was fun, but poorly paced and I just wish they went in a different direction I gave it a B Fun, well-made movie, but should've been a lot better

I feel like the whole Janet situation about her not being worried in Ant-Man and the Wasp may be related to the fact that in Ant-Man and the Wasp, they weren't sending signals, they were just sending Scott inside (And Hank before that), so there was no way Kang could've detected it. Even on Quantumania, she was pretty chill about Cassie building the quantum manipulator UNTIL she heard it was sending signals. Before that, she had only heard it was a map of some sort. It wasn't until just after Cassie talked about signals that she started panicking.

I definitely agree there was a lot of missed potential with Scott and Cassie’s relationship. I feel like there are still ways to explore their disconnect even with this quantum realm storyline. Scott missed 5 years of his daughter’s life. She’s a completely different person now than the little girl he left behind. There’s so much potential there for emotional character arcs but it’s barely touched on at all. Instead, we get MODOK, easily the most embarrassing thing the MCU has ever done.

I felt like this movie suffered greatly from the same issues that, Thor Ragnarok & Multiverse of Madness suffered from. There'll be a serious scene that has tension and building it up.. Only for it to throw a joke at us. Thus cutting the tension and undermining the entire scene...Just like Ragnarok. It felt like there was so much potential to show us a lot of interesting stuff and really explore the quantum realm... But it just gave us the most boring, uninteresting version of the world that we could have gotten...Like in Multiverse of Madness

@@suzrysai6368I wasn't at all expecting an avengers movie. I was expecting an antman movie that was still goofy. But not THIS level of goofy. The humor is ONCE AGAIN too much. Maybe that's Disney's fault, I don't know. But they gotta learn to dial it back.. We don't need a joke thrown in our faces every 30 seconds. Just because it's an Ant-man movie. Doesn't mean they should be trying so hard to make us laugh. Which sadly has become a common re-occurring issue in the MCU. Every joke feels forced. Which messes with the tone and the characters.

Dylan Durrance Oh trust me, this Kang will be back. Don’t for a second believe he’s dead. His “death” was VERY similar to that of Darren’s “death” in Ant Man. I think Tony changed his will the day before. He had time to record his hologram among other things in case of his death, so he thought ahead what could happen. So he hoped the plan would work and bring everybody back, and in the case of his untimely death he updated his will just in case. So in that head canon far from home makes a lot more sense😃👍 He was optimistic that the plan would work and therefore he prepared Peter for a new life without him. That note was very short so if he hadn't die Tony would throw it away.

I hear all your concerns about how this movie could've been in the real world and told a more personal story between Scott and Cassie. But honestly, the logical progression of the Ant-Man franchise for me had to be eventually them going into the Quantum Realm and spending the whole movie there, and what better movie to do it than the end of a trilogy. Put it this way, the quantum realm's been such an important part of every movie Scott's been in, there's no way they wouldn't have actually shown us the world.

I liked it and thought it was good, but definitely not great. Kang, Ant-Man, and Janet were all great, loved them, but I felt I definitely had some issues with the rest of it. When it was serious it was really good, but it REPEATEDLY undercut itself with bad humor, particularly with MODOK and the rebels. Also, it wasn’t even an Ant-Man and The Wasp film, Hope was disappointingly absent. Also, I totally agree that Cassie was a HUGE missed opportunity. For example, she says about the quantum telescope thing; “if I had built this while you were in the quantum realm I could’ve found you.” That would’ve been a good way to show that she wasn’t just naturally adept at Quantum science lol, she was desperate to learn whatever she could to find Scott. I personally really liked the first 2, and I do like this one, but it could’ve been much better. It’s a 7/10 for me personally.

I enjoyed most of the movie. Obviously, Kang and Johnathan Majors steal the show. I was glued whenever he was on screen. I also loved how weird the movie gets at times. Sure, it is random, but at points it really worked. There are some great visuals (and not so great visuals). The pacing is good and the whole story works. I do think the side characters aren’t memorable, the first act was the weakest part of the movie, MODOK was poorly executed, and I wanted more charm similar to the other movies. At the end of the day, however, this isn’t the worst MCU movie and is pretty enjoyable. I do understand why the reviews are the way they are, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. The post credits were awesome with the teases of the Kang variants. Bring on more Kang! My score is an 8/10.

Hey Sean 2 thoughts on the movie 1. for me Darron cross MODOK was like Topher Grace as Venom I like them when they are full suited in their character but they look is the problem whenever I try to take it seriously and if you remove them or edit them out of the movie the movie is MUCH MUCH better. 2. As far as the Quantum realm problem I didn't mind that because in the last 2 Ant-Man movies their a like different layers to the super small and that the quantum realm is not like 1 place their like a voyage downward like when they where shrinking you could see them passing through smaller more bizarre things and I think that since the Quantum realm is entirely outside of time their was like a area in between the real realm and the Quantum Realm where its kind of half in half, and in the first Ant Man he goes subatomic but returns to Cassie in almost real time I get why their a little bit of a plot hole their but that didn't bother me to much I agree with you I think the first act should have been longer to establish fuller character arcs and to expand on the relationship between the ant family. Overall still liked the film not perfect at all but I enjoyed it most of it and was neutral for the rest the whole way through B- would watch again

35:22 Yeah, I leaned over to my dad and quoted one of my favorite Dr. Evil lines: "No I'm just gonna leave them to die and hope everything went to plan." Or at the very least, I just commented in general about Kang not bothering to check that his enemies are dead.

Okay hear me out and this is gonna be a hot take. This movie’s biggest problem is the tone. It’s the same thing with Thor 4 except kinda the opposite where this movie took itself too seriously sometimes when it didn’t need to. So here’s my hot take: The best solution to actually making this movie tonally consistent and in line with the franchise, Kang is the big fat wrench that didn’t need to be there. Especially with how they treated him at the very end DX. If MODOK was the big bad guy and Kang was the puppeteer (like something similar to the Thanos/loki dynamic of Avengers) I think this movie could’ve been a lot more entertaining and enjoyable to watch… If you fix the design and cgi on him.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is kinda like an episode of your favourite TV show... not as good as other episodes, but you need it as well to understand the end. My cynical thoughts would be: Most of Quantumania is a directionless, poorly constructed, tention-less mess that doesn't know it's own tone, doesn't really give it's main character a definitive character arc any more than the Avengers movies and makes us (the audience) feel like we're still stuck in Phase 4, if not for Kang who finally gives the MCU the focus it needs. My more optimistic thoughts would be: The jokes weren't forced on Kang and they never made him look stupid in any way (Thank God). Though it suffers from the sickness that plagued Wakanda Forever (trying to do so much in one movie), Quantumania still doesn't really waste any time. It doesn't fully know where it's going, but it gets there quickly. That's it. Quantumania, 5.9/10. Marvel, please learn your lessons. Prioritise story over the comedy... and make it marvellous!... like you used to 😔

Something I noticed early on that kind of bothered me with the mechanics of Pym particles was Hank's use of drops to enlarge a mini pizza into one to feed the whole family. It's funny for the nanosecond before you realize that Ant-Man could have solved world hunger! 🤔

I felt like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was mostly a good film, but I had a few issues. 1. I felt like the movie was too short. The movie could have easily been 2.5 hours if more backstory was given to Janet or Kang. Or even just a clear vision of how Scott is doing after the events of Endgame and his work (we could have had his friends back to). We could have also been shown a progression of Scott and Janet's relationship. I feel like the 1st part of the film went too fast and if Marvel took some more time for the 1st part of the film, in San Fransico, the film could have been way better going into the Quantum Realm. 2. I am very confused with Janet's time in the Quantum Realm. Cassie is sending "signals" deep into the Quantum Realm and then Janet snaps. The first scene of the movie got me confused as time went on. Where was Janet in the Quantum Realm, deep in or not? Hank was able to save Janet in the Quantum Realm without any "signals", but "signals" became a thing in the next movie. It got me really confused. 3. I hate the reliance on comedy and humor in this movie. It is ok if it has some humor here and there, that won't hurt, but when it is repeating humor, it gets a bit annoying. When the tension was building for an hour while everyone was exploring the Quantum Realm and the tensions of Kang kept building, comedy shot down that tension. In the final battle, same thing with MODOK. I also felt like the trailers revealed too much as we all knew what was coming in the movie. If the trailers didn't reveal Kang, it would have been a gamble, but it would have payed off. If the humor and comedy didn't interfere in the Quantum Realm scenes, the movie would have been way better. The humor in San Fransico is very fine to me. If I had to rate this film, I would give it a solid 7. This movie has improved a lot compared to other MCU projects. Did it start Phase 5 off with a smash? A little bit, but I had my issues.

I think the explanation for why Janet wasn’t concerned about the quantum realm in Ant-man and the wasp was explained in a line or two when she said that there was a world deeper in the realm. Perhaps they weren’t sending Scott down to the part that was actually inhabited.

I think maybe what you could be missing from the inciting incident is that she gets anxious when she hears they are sending a signal down to the quantum realm. If I recall she seems fine when she thinks it is just a device that is viewing or mapping it. I also think that their research of the quantum realm in the previous film was so much on the surface that perhaps she wasn’t worried about it. I mean these are stretch explanations and it is a marvel movie so it hardly needs to make a ton of sense but they certainly could have done better.

I do have a few criticisms. One, Luis isn't in the film which felt strange. It felt a big piece of what makes films so enjoyable was missing. Ghost wasn't there too which so I wonder if they got the quantum particles too her!? Tbh I suppose they could have just given it to her off screen. Also the story felt quite rushed. They shouldn't have gotten into the quantum realm so quickly. They should have spent a bit of time in the real world first. Also found it odd how they made it like Cassie, Hank and hope are family. Like she called Hank uncle Hank. Since when are they that close!? I guess it's kinda strange Cassie could build the machine but that doesn't bother me too much cos she could maybe do it if she spent years studying it. Apart from that I loved this movie. Kang as a character, a villain and Majors performance were all amazing. Can't wait to see more of him. I loved how brutal it got in the climax, I was so scared for Scott. I think it had some nice heartwarming relationship moments between the characters mainly Cassie and Scott and Scott and Hope. Maybe should have had a bit more but still a decent amount, besides we're gonna see them again so. The action was fantastic, apart from a couple of shots that looked like they were on a green screen, the visuals and CGI was spectacular. I liked MODOK, his CGI looked good and I loved seeing him interact with Scott, Hank, and Hope. His origin was cool to see too. It had some great individual moments, like the hundreds of ants "killing" kang and Scott screaming "KANG!" I loved the shift in tone. I liked how it was more serious, it was refreshing and different. And it still had that ant man movie type humour. The jokes all landed well and it didn't undercut the drama for me. It's not like it was Thor Ragnarok. I liked how it explored Janents time in the quantum realm. I also the world building was great. I loved how much imagination and creativity went into the bizzare but cool creatures of the quantum realm. Finally the post credit scenes were so good! Both of them were unexpected and awesome to see. Overall while I do have a few issues, mostly I loved it. This is probably my favourite ant man film

Re:why Janet was okay with Scott in the QR in post-credits scene: there are different levels to the QR/QR is large enough that Kang wouldn't detect Scott. It would explain why various people did/didn't experience time travel.

I personally think that Janet's issue with what they were doing with the quantum realm was specifically the signal being sent down. Maybe Kang could track her through it. But Scott going down into the realm for 10 seconds nobody would know where he came from. And I also thought they said something about where they were being even deeper than Scott had been. So maybe that's the reason for it?? I don't know that's just my best guess. I dug the movie. Maybe it's just special because I got to see it tonight for my birthday...but I really liked it. MODOK was just as ridiculous as you said...but his 'origin story' and initial introduction did make me laugh!!

I agree with a lot of what you said, but the plot hole with Janet in the post credit scene not being scared of the quantum realm can be explained with Loki. When Janet was in the quantum realm, He who remains from the end of loki was keeping the multiverse and all the other Kangs at bay. Sylvie kills him, and now all of the sudden it’s like he who remains had never been trimming the multiverse. Janet’s history has changed because now all the Kangs throughout time and space exist, and the conqueror was exiled to the quantum realm. I’m not sure if that makes any sense in writing, Feige really needs to give us some sort of proper explanation of how this all works so we don’t have to piece it together

I personally liked MODOK. Yeah, the uncanny valley is there, but what universe did people think that face was gonna be done right? Honestly, it wasn't THAT bad, i do think the uncanny valley aspect did add to the creepy part of it. I was fine with I got. The jokes yeah, aren't that funny. But I do like that conversation he has with Cassie, where she tells him "You don't have to be a dick." And when he says "But look at what I've done. I'm a huge dick," and she ends up changing him in the end, I actually really liked that! Granted, yes I wish he wasn't the butt of all the jokes, but for what they did and try to accomplish, I was fine with what I got.

What I find interesting is how Kang is very much different from Thanos. While Thanos is a honest man and is a man of his word (ex: Him sparing Tony in exchange for the Time Stone and even being upfront about what he did to the stones after Infinity War), Kang likes to manipulate others and feeds off of their naivety and emotions and doesn’t seem to hold his end of the bargain, which is truly terrifying of within itself.

Scott had the time thing in endgame cuz he got sucked into a quantum vortex where time works differently. Kind of like the ants building a society in quantumania. I liked it that it was different, and it kind of reminded me of Star Wars mixed in with Strange World. I honestly didn't think the comedy was that bad, the jokes were pretty funny. In terms of the jokes in the film, I feel like there wasn't as many funny moments in the film. I thought MODOK was funny though, in terms of the CGI, and the way he looks, but he was comic book accurate. I love Kang though. I don't understand why people are hating it, it wasn't that bad.
