This video is a review of Ant-Man and the WASP Quantumania, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. The speaker begins by discussing their initial hopes for the film, which include a more focused and urgent plot. They then share their overall positive opinion of the movie and the addition of the much-anticipated villain, Kang the Conqueror. The review notes that Kang's performance, played by Jonathan Majors, is both aggressive and manipulative but also carries a sympathetic edge that adds a new layer to his character. The film's world-building is also highlighted, especially as it delves into the Quantum Realm and introduces different creatures, cultures, and societies. The reviewer likens the movie to Flash Gordon in terms of its overall tone and goofiness. The review is highly positive and concludes with the statement that the missing piece of the MCU has been found with Kang's arrival.

Imo the humor in this one was much better than Thor 4 because this one had funny situations (Modok, holes etc.) vs the characters and heroes constantly cracking jokes in situations where they shouldn’t. This one felt more like classic mcu with humor interlaced with serious things when Thor 4 felt just like a big joke that none of the characters took seriously. There was obviously a tone problem here but it’s in all of the mcu movies and I don’t really have much of an issue with it
@irreplaysable

Yeah I fully agree with you - Thor 4 was definitely much more egregious in this regard, and I thought that this movie had enough moments where they completely stopped with the jokes, in order to make the serious moments land. I understand the critics’ perspectives on the tonal issues, but I can’t say it impeded on my enjoyment as much as it did for them.

I think what made Kang so threatening is how distant Jonathan Majors plays him. He's in touch with some part of his humanity but he's also so cold and solemn towards all the feelings people have for him. He doesn't care because he knows so much more than the people he's fighting, and in his mind that justifies his mission in every way. Majors did an amazing job adding so much to the character, making him feel human and so distinctly inhuman at the same time.

Probably helps that no one is joking and all the other characters take him seriously as a threat except maybe Scott when he first meets Kang. But you could argue that’s nerves or he’s trying to keep Cassie from getting scared.

Sean absolutely hit the nail on the head. I’m liking Marvel movies less and less because the same problems are in every movie recently(minus Wakanda Forever) and aren’t being fixed. @rileyribble6733

I don’t at all think this Kang is dead tbh. His “death” was VERY similar to that of Darren’s in Ant Man. We see him get shrunk down and vanish, but not lying dead and breathless. If you notice too, his death kinda looked like it was going into a crystallized structure just like the energy source for his ship. So I think he actually teleported out of there unintentionally, and the other Kang’s simply BELIEVE he is dead. I have a strong feeling this Kang will return in Kang Dynasty and ultimately end up victorious over the others In regards to the Council of Kang’s, the three main ones there were Immortus (the one with a raspy type voice and the emperor looking clothes. The comics Immortus is a lot like He Who remains but in the MCU they’re two separate characters. Rama Tut was the Egyptian one and actually the first ever Kang variant to appear in the comics, in an issue of Fantastic 4. Then the last one is I THINK Scarlet Centurion but his design is a lot different here. Then finally the one in the Loki scene was Victor Timely, who was Kang Prime who time traveled back to the past to set up his future rule All in all, despite its flaws, I really loved this movie and would give it a 8.5/10. The future of the MCU is very bright imo

I was pleasantly surprised by the movie when I got out of the cinemas. I thought both visually and on a worldbuilding basis, it was leagues ahead than most of the other MCU output over the past few years. I also did not notice the tonal problem as much as critics did. However, I would say that the one major problem I had with it was the lack of development in the relationship between Hope and Scott. Throughout the movie, they barely even interacted, which felt like an odd juxtaposition with how their dynamic was explored in the previous movies. For me, it just made the “I love you” at the end ring really hollow, particularly when they ended up just making their way back to the real world straight afterwards anyway. Idk - we have seen through WandaVision that Marvel is clearly capable of developing good romances, so it feels like they really dropped the ball with this one.

I thought she cleared this up by the “you didn’t look deep enough” line. She sent Scott down there at a controlled distance. I don’t know why people are calling it a plot hole. I mean even in the second movie, she told hank to go down to a very specific location. She freaked out cuz she wasn’t there to over see what Cassie was doing. Sending someone down to a specific location is completely different than sending down an unsupervised signal.

My Spoiler Thoughts Scott Lang Post-Endgame: Pretty much agree with everything you said. Just wish we spent more time in San Fran before getting thrust in the Quantum Realm. Cassie the Rebel & Genius: I like that Cassie is trying to help everyone. We know that Scott is her hero, she grew up watching him help those in need. They overtly state this in the second movie, she tells her dad that she wants to be his partner. So from her point of view, he's taking the easy way out, he saved the universe and now he's taking it easy. Whereas she sees the world in a different way and is trying to push her dad to be her hero again. Even in the Quantum Realm, she continues to push her dad. He doesn't want to help the Freedom Fighters, he just wants to get out. But she sees people in need. I do wish that this was more in the center of the story, as it gets lost in all the grand scope stuff. And I think this idea would've worked better in a movie outside of the Quantum Realm. As for Cassie being a genius now, I didn't have a problem with it. Again, it was rushed. We just get lines of dialogue of how she's been studying Hank's work and all. It makes sense, I mean look she probably studied a lot during the Blip on how to save her dad. But I wish they would've showed more of her genius rather than just tell us. Everything in San Fran was rushed just to get to the Quantum Realm, and I didn't like that. Inciting Incident: To start off I didn't even connect the dots between the Ant-Man and the Wasp post-credit scene where they send Scott into the Quantum Realm and the inciting incident here until you brought it up. It is very weird. Like Janet was there in the post-credit scene, if she knew how dangerous the Quantum Realm, was why would she sign off on sending Scott there, even if it was for 10 seconds. To me, it just feels like the post-credit scene was necessary for Endgame and they didn't care about it for the context of this movie. I mean yes, Ant-Man and the Wasp was written way before they had any ideas on what this movie would be like, but still, it's frustrating, I feel like this could've been somewhat fixed with a few lines of dialogue, but no, we just have to get straight to the Quantum Realm in this movie Star Wars of the MCU: Not much here. I liked exploring the Quantum Realm. It felt a lot like Star Wars to me, but as soon as we got there, I wish we went with another direction for the third movie of this franchise. It just didn't fit with its predecessors. Everything in the Quantum Realm felt like it would've worked better as a Disney+ show set in between Ant-Man and the Wasp and a proper third Ant-Man movie. Would've it have been ambitious for a Disney+ show, sure. But I don't particularly care. Also, we spent a lot of time just meandering in the Quantum Realm before meeting Kang, but all of the time spent is pointless because it's all just exposition and characters telling us about the impending doom. I wish we could've actually explored the Quantum Realm. Kang: Not much here either. I loved Kang in this movie. Agree with everything said. MODOK: Similarly, MODOK didn't work for me. I think he could've worked better as the main villain of another Ant-Man project later down the road. Just didn't fit with Kang at all. Was gonna touch on all the chapter markers, but I ended up agreeing with you a lot near the end haha. In the end, the movie was fun, but poorly paced and I just wish they went in a different direction I gave it a B Fun, well-made movie, but should've been a lot better

I feel like the whole Janet situation about her not being worried in Ant-Man and the Wasp may be related to the fact that in Ant-Man and the Wasp, they weren't sending signals, they were just sending Scott inside (And Hank before that), so there was no way Kang could've detected it. Even on Quantumania, she was pretty chill about Cassie building the quantum manipulator UNTIL she heard it was sending signals. Before that, she had only heard it was a map of some sort. It wasn't until just after Cassie talked about signals that she started panicking.

I saw Quantumania last night, and I currently think that is just okay-maybe leaning mixed-negative. However there are very noticeable issues with this movie for me that are part of a growing problem with the Muliverse Saga as a whole so far, and I have a lot of things about this that I feel I need to discuss. Between Quantumania and Multiverse of Madness, I am starting to believe that Marvel is afraid to make smaller and self-contained stories. If you think about it, the first Ant-Man and the first Doctor Strange were both focused on their characters and very sparingly touched on connections to the wider MCU, and many fans over the years complained about how they were not relevant enough to the wider overarching story and were too boring compared to Avengers and other big Marvel crossover movies. So it seems that with Ant-Man and the Wasp, they tried to appease this vocal section of the fandom by constantly reminding them within the movie of how it takes place after Civil War, and giving exposition to how the quantum realm will possibly factor into Endgame. Then with Multiverse of Madness, they hijacked what should have been the next step in the development of Dr. Strange’s self-contained character arc by giving exposition into how the multiverse works and seeming cutting out the 2nd act at the last minute and replacing it with Illuminati cameos. And now with Quantumania, they got rid of Luis and the supporting characters from the first two Ant-Man movies and rushed right into the quantum realm where the entire cast of this movie is sidelined in favor of exposition for Kang. It’s almost as if Marvel was afraid that they would lose the attention of a portion of the fans if they didn’t force exposition for Secret Wars into these regular releases instead of saving cameos and setup for an actual crossover event movie. Instead of quickly jumping from Endgame to setup for the next end-of-saga event, Marvel should have had Phase 4 build up to a smaller Avengers movie on the level of the first or second that they could then use as a starting point for the ground work of the Multiverse Saga. But I imagine that not wanting to upset a portion of the fandom with an Avengers movie that is not an Endgame-level experience, Marvel decided to have the next proper crossover event be at the very end of the saga in five to six years and relegating groundwork for the next big event to Ant-Man and Dr. Strange movies. With both of these two sub-franchised just happening to be the one that this portion of the fandom have complained about for not having enough connectivity and spectacle. I fully respect MCU fans that are already excited for the next big end-of-saga event and one who wish that some movies have more connectivity, but self contained-regular releases are what give films like Infinity War and Endgame the weight and significance in addition to the scope and spectacle. The best parts of Quantumania for me were the beginning and end when we got to see Scott, Cassie, and the Pyms as a family now, and I felt that needed to constitute the entire first act instead of the first five to ten minutes. When I was watching the movie, It seemed like there was a first act about the Pym family and a second act about the world building of the people of the quantum realm that were completely cut out so we could hurry up and get the the Kang exposition. I also thought that MODOK was a good enough character for what he was given, but he was just there in addition to the empty setup. If Marvel focused on Quantumania as an individual production rather than an exposition piece, they could have had something of a double act where MODOK was the eccentric comic relief and Kang was the serious straight man. Like I said, Quantumania was not terrible but not great either for me, but I am incredibly frustrated that Marvel has hijacked another regular release in favor of empty groundwork for the Multiverse Saga. But with the entire Pym family serving this movie at the end, I hope that Marvel can take the opportunity for one last smaller, self-contained, and personal Ant-Man movie before Kang Dynasty.

I definitely agree there was a lot of missed potential with Scott and Cassie’s relationship. I feel like there are still ways to explore their disconnect even with this quantum realm storyline. Scott missed 5 years of his daughter’s life. She’s a completely different person now than the little girl he left behind. There’s so much potential there for emotional character arcs but it’s barely touched on at all. Instead, we get MODOK, easily the most embarrassing thing the MCU has ever done.

I got the sense that Cassie had significant help from Hank and Hope in building the device, yes she learned a lot and had the idea after reading Hanks journal, but it seemed like Hank and Hope were clearly helping. Also, why are so many people convinced that Kang is dead? I know the other variants mention it at the end but it seems like that could very easily be a misdirect

Dylan Durrance Oh trust me, this Kang will be back. Don’t for a second believe he’s dead. His “death” was VERY similar to that of Darren’s “death” in Ant Man. I think he just shrunk down and vanished to another realm. My theory is that he’s either within the multiverse itself somewhere, or the Beyondverse. Either way, I definitely believe this specific Kang will return, along with the Council obviously

Screw the reviews! Well made movie, more serious tone than the last two ant man movies, Not too many jokes, but just enough- Gave me hope for the future of the MCU movies again! My only gripe is the modok thing but I mean what else were they really gonna do with modok ever? Just a little too silly imo but still was fine with it.

I felt like this movie suffered greatly from the same issues that, Thor Ragnarok & Multiverse of Madness suffered from. There'll be a serious scene that has tension and building it up.. Only for it to throw a joke at us. Thus cutting the tension and undermining the entire scene...Just like Ragnarok. It felt like there was so much potential to show us a lot of interesting stuff and really explore the quantum realm... But it just gave us the most boring, uninteresting version of the world that we could have gotten...Like in Multiverse of Madness

Maybe that's Disney's fault, I don't know. But they gotta learn to dial it back.. We don't need a joke thrown in our faces every 30 seconds. Just because it's an Ant-man movie. Doesn't mean they should be trying so hard to make us laugh. Which sadly has become a common re-occurring issue in the MCU. Every joke feels forced. Which messes with the tone and the characters.

I think Tony changed his will the day before. He had time to record his hologram among other things in case of his death, so he thought ahead what could happen. So he hoped the plan would work and bring everybody back, and in the case of his untimely death he updated his will just in case. So in that head canon far from home makes a lot more sense😃👍 He was optimistic that the plan would work and therefore he prepared Peter for a new life without him. That note was very short so if he hadn't die Tony would throw it away.

I hear all your concerns about how this movie could've been in the real world and told a more personal story between Scott and Cassie. But honestly, the logical progression of the Ant-Man franchise for me had to be eventually them going into the Quantum Realm and spending the whole movie there, and what better movie to do it than the end of a trilogy. Put it this way, the quantum realm's been such an important part of every movie Scott's been in, there's no way they wouldn't have actually shown us the world.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I gave it an 8/10. Could possibly lower to 7.5/10 after another watch but I enjoyed it. Worst part for me was the visual aesthetics of MODOK cause, like you said in the non-spoiler review, it felt like my eyes were going cross eyed. I’ve had vertigo twice in my life and man I felt the same way looking at him. I did not necessarily feel the tone was drastically changing but naturally changing. A lot of relatable humor aside from Modok. Tbh I just have never been a fan of Modok whether that’s in the comics or the Ultimate Alliance Game. Kang is….wow. I can say that based off what I have seen that I understand his motive and like his villain role more than Thanos as crazy as it sounds. Beginning and end of the movie was weird. I feel like there was a few cuts missing from both sides. What was even the point of the last scenes of the movie on Earth(yes I know the QR is still on Earth but smaller). If you cut that out the movie still goes the same. The beginning I wish we could have seen more of Cassie and be able to understand where she is coming from. I do understand why people can be confused why Janet would have her mood change about the QR suddenly in the beginning of this movie compared to the end of Ant-Man & The Wasp but it is possible that Janet was specifically giving Scott direction to a completely different part of the QR that Kang would not be able to find him or track them. It would be like if Aliens went to the edge of our solar system, in all likelihood we wouldn’t know and if we did then it would be way too late. Gotta remember the QR is like another universe and is huge. Michelle Pfeifer(Might be butchering the spelling) was great. Michael Douglas was solid. Hope….kinda disappointed in her role in her and Ant-Man’s movies. I mean The Wasp has always been important and sometimes more important than Ant-Man in the comics. They treat these movies like she’s a Nightwing to Ant-Man’s Batman if that makes any sense. If you titled this Ant-Man: Quantumania nobody would bat an eye cause they aren’t using her like a major character. She comes in to save the day but we have had little character development from her and that is one of the top issues i’ve had with the MCU. Again I enjoyed it. It felt like a Wizard of Oz type of vibe. New place with crazy people/creatures. Antagonist wants something from the Hero and their life and family are being threatened.

I think maybe what you could be missing from the inciting incident is that she gets anxious when she hears they are sending a signal down to the quantum realm. If I recall she seems fine when she thinks it is just a device that is viewing or mapping it. I also think that their research of the quantum realm in the previous film was so much on the surface that perhaps she wasn’t worried about it. I mean these are stretch explanations and it is a marvel movie so it hardly needs to make a ton of sense but they certainly could have done better.

I liked it and thought it was good, but definitely not great. Kang, Ant-Man, and Janet were all great, loved them, but I felt I definitely had some issues with the rest of it. When it was serious it was really good, but it REPEATEDLY undercut itself with bad humor, particularly with MODOK and the rebels. Also, it wasn’t even an Ant-Man and The Wasp film, Hope was disappointingly absent. Also, I totally agree that Cassie was a HUGE missed opportunity. For example, she says about the quantum telescope thing; “if I had built this while you were in the quantum realm I could’ve found you.” That would’ve been a good way to show that she wasn’t just naturally adept at Quantum science lol, she was desperate to learn whatever she could to find Scott. I personally think that Janet's issue with what they were doing with the quantum realm was specifically the signal being sent down. Maybe Kang could track her through it. But Scott going down into the realm for 10 seconds nobody would know where he came from. And I also thought they said something about where they were being even deeper than Scott had been. So maybe that's the reason for it?? I don't know that's just my best guess. I dug the movie. Maybe it's just special because I got to see it tonight for my birthday...but I really liked it. I think the reason Janet was reacting differently to quantum realm stuff in this movie compared to endgame is because of specifically what was being done with the quantum realm. In endgame and ant man and the wasp, the quantum stuff was a short term travel through the realm or quickly collecting samples. In this movie, Cassie was specifically sending a signal down to the quantum realm and planning to do long term stuff there.

As far as the Quantum realm problem I didn't mind that because in the last 2 Ant-Man movies their a like different layers to the super small and that the quantum realm is not like 1 place their like a voyage downward like when they where shrinking you could see them passing through smaller more bizarre things and I think that since the Quantum realm is entirely outside of time their was like a area in between the real realm and the Quantum Realm where its kind of half in half, and in the first Ant Man he goes subatomic but returns to Cassie in almost real time I get why their a little bit of a plot hole their but that didn't bother me to much I agree with you I think the first act should have been longer to establish fuller character arcs and to expand on the relationship between the ant family. Hi Sean, the scene from the ant man 2 movie where janet sends scott lang to the quantum realm is to take healing particles for ghost and also he went to the outer most layer of the quantum realm, as janet explained in the quantuamina that quantuam realm is different as u shrink smaller and smaller so janet was okay in sending Scott to the quantum realm because he was sent to the outer layer of the realm not to deep where kang could find him or he'd be in trouble. I enjoyed the film a lot it's probably in my top 10 film of the mcu. Unlike no way home where dr strange and Peter were just to lazy to talk over a spell, here janet has no idea about the quantum device and she's just happy that they've made something remarkable and cassie wasn't the only person who made this device she had some help with hank and hope, reason why they didn't tell Scott about it is coz he was just praising over himself for saving the world and stuff. Kang is done justice he fabulous in this film, well sure cassie arc might have been skipped over but overall I didn't mind (just my opinion on it) my main priority was kang and the connection to the multiverse for which they did wonderfully better than multiverse of madness. When it comes to modak It worked for me in this film but what didn't work was killing him off instead of making him escape the quantum realm, where he could return in future projects but unfortunately they didn't do that but fight scene, visuals story was huge improvement over phase four films like multiverse of madness. I enjoyed the film a lot. 8/10 for this film it could have been better but it was amazing and satisfying.

For me it's a 7/10. I liked quite a bit of stuff and there was also a lot that didn't work for me. Jonathan Majors as Kang was the absolute standout for me and I really felt like Kathryn Newton as Cassie was a great addition to the cast. I adored the world building of the Quantum Realm and that kind of world building was what I originally wanted from Multiverse of Madness. But I wanted a lot more from it especially because this was supposed to be a big introduction to Kang. I needed more darkness and higher stakes for it to feel like a necessary story and then they decided to defeat Kang with ants and immediately killed him off and so the movie felt fun but really unnecessary. I wanted more from Scott and Cassie's relationship because a lot of it felt really surface level (I generally found there to be a lack of character development throughout the movie). And one of the most frustrating things about the movie for me was Janet. Her not telling them anything felt like such an overused and tired trope and a lot could have been avoided if there was either a reason for her to not tell them anything (other than her wanting to protect them because that's the usual justification) or her actually being honest.

Some of what the critics say are true, but most of the issues people have with it I believe are from people going into the movie super hyped with expectations so high the movie couldn't possibly live up too those expectations. There are a lot of setup catch-up things to keep a look out for at the start of the movie, and I do think it leaves a good point for a more well suited Ant-Man 3, leaving this movie as a sort of Ant-Man teamup flick (maybe called Shrinkers! or something. idk), but for product reasons that is a hard workout and can be dismissed with the old “People just watch the last season of most TV shows and play catch up to make it fun.” It seems rather apparent Marvel wanted this movie to come out before gotg3 cause that is the first “Oh yeah Kang is also the actual villain, he set up whatever happened in this flick. Doesn’t he make a good Quarritch, yeah?” BTW Sean from the way you speak about the details and set up for this movie, it kinda seems like you’re justifying your biggest gripe with not acknowledging character development and side plots can take place offscreen.
