This video tutorial shows step by step instructions on how to create a 3D printable gear box with stacked herringbone gears. We printed on both a Raise3D and Prusa 3d printer.

Mr. McWhorter, as far as i remember, for the purpose of calculating distance between the centers of the gears there is given a so called pitch diameter. So no need to use outside and inside diameters. Plus, using a pitch diameter you don't need to add a millimeter to avoid jamming of ghe gears. Pitch diameter takes this into account.

Thanks so much for providing the basic concepts and verbalizing each key stroke. I may be able to do something on my own now. I had same problem as you with the experienced U-Tube instructors (depression and gave up). My experience was on the drafting board and management for a few decades.

Another great lesson Paul! Thank you so much for all your work bringing these to us, I feel so fortunate to have found your lessons, really like learning the Fusion, and can't wait to get my 3D printer! Also looking at your Arduino classes too, want to take those also!!! Thanks again!!!! w.

On the video at 3:45 you were using the gear parameter "Virtual Teeth" at 26.173 instead of "Root Diameter" of 25.695.

Yes, saw that too. It's funny because you want to say something to help, but one would need a time machine and a phone number to do so.

couple of comments: - dimensions is something that some commands ask about straight away - so to save time, its best to just put them there. I know that initially this is not good for learning, but few lessons in.. - Rotation - just use the middle button of the mouse, or a keyboard shortcut. Saves you having to escape it. - To move objects closer together - is something that you can do in your slicing software. No need to do it in Fusion :) Great lessons btw ! nice refresher for myself!

Hello. Turn off at the preferences->design last position -> 'Auto hide sketch...' to avoid manually turning on sketch after creation. You can close the left 'data panel' to have more space room on desktop. I like watch this kind of films. Thanks.

Very good presentations, excellent for beginners like myself. FYI: the main reason for helical teeth is to reduce noise; straight teeth connect and disconnect at the same time and thus can produce a rattle. herringbone teeth connect and disconnect gradually and are much more silent. Disadvantage of helical teeth is that axial forces are created which increase the loads on the gear wheels and on the bearings. Heringbone teeth solve this problem. Andre Cirtroen (of the car company) used herringbone teeth in his gear boxes (that is why the Citroen emblem shows two matching herringbones). Could you tell a little bit more about the G-code generator that you use? Many thanks for your excellent lessons.

Another wonderful tutorial. I am moving right along with these videos and understand everything thanks to your great teaching. One thing I have seen in Fusion 360 presentations is an entire assembly like this gear box actually assembled and working on the screen in Fusion 360. It would be great to see how to do this by assembling this gear box and spinning it on the screen. As I understand it problems like the posts being too large or gears not meshing properly can be identified by the program and highlighted so that you know where the problems lay. It is this aspect of Fusion 360 that I am most interested in. How do you go about doing this?

Great video series but I still don't understand why you click the dimension away only to tap the D key to dimension. Guess it's something to do with habits... Just tried to loft something, that is quite interesting, maybe a tip for a new episode?

Another great lesson! Two questions. What was the reasoning for choosing 12 and 17 teeth for your gears? Odd ratios. Would you show the math for calculating the overall ratio of this design?
@paulmcwhorter
@paulmcwhorter 6 жыл бұрын
No real math . . . just wanted a big and little gear, so get gear reduction.
@bobbailey7024
@bobbailey7024 5 жыл бұрын
Driven gear divided by driver gear (17 /12) for as many driven and driver gears in the gear train. E.g Driver = 12 teeth and driven = 17 teeth the ratio would be 17/12. As the next 12 tooth gear is fixed to the first 17 tooth driven gear, it becomes the driver for the next 17 tooth gear and so on. (17/12) x (17/12) x (17/12) gives an overall ratio of 2.843171269 : 1. You can also use the pitch circle diameters instead of teeth in the same manner.

The error in the spacing of the posts came when you copied the wrong diameter down for your gears! Easy mistake to make.
