As of today, you never see MD-80’s anymore in the US as they have all phased out. But when I thought would be another ordinary day of plane spotting at RIC, I see this Mad Dog in the distance and getting ready to takeoff! The video may not sound like it, but that was one of the loudest sounds I’ve ever heard in my life! I didn’t think those tiny little engines would be so loud and powerful! It was probably the loudest plane I’ve ever caught at RIC! But anyway, I hope you enjoy this amazing departure made by the legendary Mad Dog!!
Flight info:
Airline: World Atlantic Airlines
Aircraft: McDonnell Douglas MD-83
Aircraft registration: N805WA
Aircraft age: 27 years
Flight time: 1 hr 05 mins
Departure Airport: Richmond International Airport
Arrival Airport: John Glenn Columbus International Airport

It's not unusual for aircraft to keep flying for private, charter, and cargo operators well after the last airlines retire them. Of course, it wasn't that long ago that Delta and AA were still flying these. It's only been 3.5 years since Delta retired their last ones. Just to illustrate how long airliners often remain in service past the end of their days in airline fleets, there are still about 35 727s flying around today. Of course, for unpressurized aircraft, they remain in service far longer than that. You can still find DC-3s flying around today! As well as DC-4s and DC-6s.

the late 80s and 90s were the best for aviation! The planes back then had character! The stuff today makes me.....zzzzzzzzz.

Yeah, I wish these were still flying around too. Especially the 727! Would love to hear that beast takeoff in person!

From mid '92 until the end of '95 I was a ramper for AA at a hub airport. I fueled lots of these and watched them do their thing. I got plenty of non-rev flights on them, too. Those were some good times in aviation.

Definitely not all that loud. I’ve seen countless time after time and they are way overhyped. Wait until you encounter say a 727, 737-200, or DC-9, those will make you rethink what loud truly is, and all are Stage III hush kitted on top of that. Not even just those 3, but even a Learjet 24/25, or Gulfstream II/III will also blow your socks off.

I’ve seen a few gulfstreams here at RIC. They have some pretty sounds to them. I did hear the 727 was the loudest airliner. It actually has the same Pratt and Whitney engines as the MD-80 does

The last variant of these planes, ( many still flying) is the Boeing 717.

@@airviation8446 Yep, Delta and Hawaiian in particular still fly a lot of 717s. When Southwest bought AirTran, they wanted to keep their fleet as all 737s, so they sold all of AirTran's 717s to Delta.
