Just started to hunt turkeys again this spring after a long lay off. Glad I found you and your channel. You actually explain and teach the skills needed to be successful. Far better than watching hunting videos that are for entertainment purposes where they usually over call and blow the birds up. Man I gotta a lot of practicing to do. This year is more about getting back in the woods and hearing some birds and learning. Had four gobblers roosted in the woods behind me yesterday morning and they were hot before they even hit the ground. Then they flew down and headed the other way. Just another day in the turkey woods. There were other bird talking in the woods on the other side of the road and that's the direction they went. Hard to compete with the real thing I guess. Thanks.

This was very helpful Dale. After off and on turkey hunting I killed my first gobbler last Saturday in Kentucky. I am 51 so it is never too late. I hunt deer like crazy but those turkeys are addictive

You spend a lot of time doing these. Thanks. I appreciate you’re telling folks that calling isn’t about sounding like a pro, just having the right cadence.
@CumberlandOutdoorsman3 жыл бұрын
I can attest to this advice, because it's 100% true. I have sat in the woods just listening intently, and have heard hens yelping and purring on an adjacent ridge barely audible to me, but then heard gobbling 200 to 300 yards away in response. It never ceases to amaze me how far a wild turkey can hear. Over calling and overly loud calling can sometimes cost you a gobbler.

Spent my mornings frustrated a lot during the C week in wi. Heard a crazy amount of gobbling most days, but they would all hen up right off. Finally Sunday night, my last time I could hunt for the 3rd week, I had 3 toms come out and I shot one at 43 yards. Never heard a gobble, and I saw 9 birds on that hunt and none of them ever strutted.

Took my nephew this morning juvenile season today and tomorrow. We heard 8 different gobblers but couldn’t get to some of them to far away. We know where 3 of them are at though and maybe going back on them in the morning before church maybe.

1st video iv watched of yours and I must say you must one heck of a guy! Just a really calming voice you have! Now I have never turkey hunted but bought several woodhaven mouth calls and been practicing this week.. I will be able to hunt in my club as of April 30th witch leaves me 3 days left of the Alabama turkey season so I'm going to give it a shot come Friday. Anyway I'll be viewing all your videos now I found you so keep them coming! Thank you!

My great uncles never used anything other than a homemade wingbone call, if you've ever heard one it just makes a peep, peep, peep sound, and they almost caused the turkeys to go extinct around my neck of the woods😄

I like that you are helping teach people how to turkey hunt. But whether you are telling people the top x things you don't want to do or whether you are telling folks the top x things they should do - it all boils down to this....That every single situation is unique and different - and that's what makes spring turkey season so exciting and so challenging.

I hunt in the mountains in SC and the first spot I went: did a natural soft yelp that I barely squeezed out and a Tom way off responded back. After that he never made another response. I then made by calls louder with Barred Owl calls. Now I realize I should’ve stayed with just soft and not done it as much.

Gonna get out into the woods as soon as Muzzle Loader season is over. Any advice on setting up for a fall turkey when there's a creek with a clear cut field next to it that leads to a hillside of hardwoods? I plan on looking for evidence of turkeys in the area but how deep should I set up in the woods if there's good habitat along the edges?

I just gathered up my turkey gear for in the morning. It's been raining for the last 3 days, so I'm ready. I don't enjoy hunting in the rain. Will a #6 2 3/4" Federal Heavy Field Load be sufficient, or should I use #4's??? I've got the #4's just incase a coyote comes in. LOL I've never shot a turkey at 50 yards, with the #6 load. I'm wondering about the penetration.
@ramrodrymensnyder26484 жыл бұрын
Jamie, I dont know what everyone else will say but I definitely would not try shooting a bird with #6 at 50 yards. Thats me personally. Especially with 2 3/4 shells. I bow hunt now, but I always hunted birds with #4 minimum and I always used 3" shells. Not saying you cant kill a turkey with 6 but they are tough birds and you damn sure dont wanna watch one fly away after you pile him up. And they WILL if you dont kill them.

Where i hunt its mostly rugged terrain with deep hollows and ridge tops no fields close by. My question is when its raining is it still worth me going and hunting the woods i know the Turkey's go to the fields quite often when its raining. How should i hunt them in the woods when its raining should i call the same as if it weren't raining?
