Fun story... Back in 1995, I ran a fanzine called Video Vision. I was about 15 years old at the time and would receive free games from various companies to review in my fanzine. One of those companies I reached out to was Shiny Entertainment. I received a nice letter and some promo materials from them, but what was best of all is that David Perry used to call me randomly over the course of about 2 years and just chat with me about various video games things, upcoming projects, etc. I'm not sure why we ever stopped chatting or why he chose me to talk to, but it's a memory I'll never forget.

For years I thought this game was a figment of my imagination. I had vague memories of the character and his weirdly shaped head. I could not remember the name of the game so I could never find any information about it. I was thrilled when I actually found it years later and got to play it again confirming I was not crazy.

I still remember the sound design all these years later. One of the first games I ever got my hands on. I remember being at a friend's house and seeing he had MDK2, I never realized the original got a sequel. Immediately asked my parents to get it for my birthday. Was sorely disappointed by the sequel's aesthetic. Lacked the grit of the original. And didnt at all care for the parts where I was forced to play as the doctor or dog (despite liking them as characters).

I remember I was home sick during a bad flu and felt pretty crappy. Then my Mom came home from "grocery" shopping and gave me a copy of MDK2 she bought for me as a surprise "pick me up". I remembered that game for years until I was bouncing around GoG and saw them. Immediately bought both it and the orginal instantly, installed them and had just as much fun as an adult as I did as a kid those years go (If not more so.)

MDK is one of my all time favorite games. Born in 92 and played it the year it released on PC (cause my dad played it) and then again on PS1. I've played it every few years since. No game has the feel the original MDK had.... that includes the sequel. One of the most highly underrated games of the 90s. And that soundtrack will always be 🔥

These games were underrated. I loved the premise of roving death machine cities and how cutting edge being able to zoom in and snipe in the first one was on PS1. Then the second one was an essential Dreamcast title imo.

MDK is probably my all time favorite video game. I used to play it on PC with a Microsoft sidewinder joystick. It was fantastic! The controls were so intuitive. When you twist the joystick, the character rotates. When you move the joystick side to side, the character sidesteps. The game was erie but fun. The graphics were way ahead of their time in my opinion. I really wish they had made a movie about it.

So much nostalgia with this one. My bigger cousin had a pretty good computer at the time and everytime my family visited them he let me play MDK or Quake. I only had the slow computer of my dad and i didnt get any games for it so seing and playing something like this with my cousin opened up a whole new world of 3d for me.

MDK2 was the start of my gaming career. The time spent being a part of the team, making that game, is to this day, the best and most fun experience Ive had in gaming. Russell Rice, the art director, was the real reason why the game feels the way it does. His humor and personality are all over this game. He slept over night at the studio more than once to squeeze in something new that was not even suppose to be in the game but he made it happen. The conehead window washers for example. Or after max crash lands into the alien ship impaling a conehead, all Russ adding stuff to the game. Remember the WASSUP Budweiser commercial? Well Russ put together a little animation to the audio of the commercial one night just for fun. He was that committed to the game. Of course Greg Zeschuk was also a massive part of feel of the game, and more so, the gameplay. He would play the hell out of it, trying to figure out how he could make it more challenging to play. And just how far he could push the player to insanity. I remember chatting with him when he had the programmers make the platform at the top of the atomic reactor break when the player finally reached the top, only to fall all the way back to the start . He thought it was hilarious! LOL The game had a ton of talented people involved with it. Casey Hudson was even responsible for making content, level 5 boss as well as all of level 8. Lots of great times and laughs. Getting to draw those loadscreens was a joy, if you look closely you can see me (the muscle man) in the left corner :P As usual your video was excellent, well done!!!!

I know it's simply nostalgia but it's merits stand by themself: it has fun story, funny dialogues, extremely solid gameplay, agoraphobic and detailed atmospheres and, cherry on top, one of the most kickass rave music in space in videogame history.

The readme file on the CD says MDK means whatever you want it to mean, but the handbook (not the manual) that came with the boxed version suggested MDK stands for "Mission: Deliver Kindness."

my small 7-year old brain exploded in several different ways upon seeing this game for the 1st time, the entire "experience" started with the CD disc itself which had gorgeous artwork, same with the manual with concept artwork that instigated the imagination even more... Then, you barely load up the game and the Menu in itself was already making your jaw drop with such presentation and the soundtrack on it... Wow, just wow... 10 out of 10 masterpiece 🤘(PC table speakers of the time had lots of bass which helped a lot too)

90s/early 2000s sci-fi games were such a cool vibe. Weird, wonderful funny AND dark, there was nothing quite as inspiring and creepy, as a kid, as your first experience with games like MDK, Oddworld, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Half Life, War Wind etc.

I'm surprised you didn't dive into the graphics a bit more. They were revolutionary for the time. I seem to remember the texture resolution being so high that no video card on the market could run it on highest. Each individual ground texture was something like 640x480. Basically the Crysis of 1995. I love MDK and have always had a fascination with it. Something about the character design and the gunhead is so unique and creative, even to this day. I originally played it and beat it on Playstation and had heard the PC version was kind of legendary because of how good the graphics were. I don't think any of us realized your character was a sprite! We thought the computer was pumping out movie quality CGI! Plus, any true gamer from the mid 90s knew it was absolutely nothing like Doom and it was the true next generation of 3D *gameplay*.

I remember MDK 2 HD was originally released as an exclusive to the Beamdog launcher, named after its studio which was founded by BioWare people. Hardly anyone found out about it so it ended up releasing on Steam less than a year after. But I also recall it being a buggy mess at launch and for example when I fell into a void after missing a jump, I respawned within that same void, camera still stuck watching from above, rather than being brought back to the previous platform, effectively soft-locking me.

It also has audio glitches, like music playing where there isn't supposed to be, or even the wrong track on occasion if I remember right. I also noticed many visual oddities, like the original in the cutscene on the Jim Dandy when Kurt is getting ready to dive for the minecrawler at the start, the gun is on his head, yet strangely in the HD version it's BOTH on his head and his arm. I've also had the hud decide to just show up whenever it wanted to randomly as well. That's the one part I'd argue against on this episode, that for PC the best way to play MDK2 is the GOG version, the original graphics actually hold up fine.

I first met MDK 2 on a Dreamcast demo disc. Played it quite a bit on there. Eventually saw it used for a couple bucks, and being 11 at the time, had enough collected couch-change to grab it. I love that game. I've never been able to get the PC version of MDK to work though :( I know I could play the PlayStation copy, but I want to play the PC version first.

I never knew that the first MDK was not done by Bioware. I remember that line in MDK: 2 with the aliens attacking Edmonton ( the City I live in and I went to the university that the doctors both went to). I thought Bioware release Shattered Steel in 1996 as there first title. It was a mech title. I remember my pops friend showing the game and said it was made in Edmonton.

This is why the first Let's Player I ever watched chose to name a relatively new episode of one of my newfound most favorite series, "Murdaw Death Kill". An episode which I don't recommend watching out of context, BTW, as it contains huge spoilers. But back to the point, I totally didn't expect this would be the series you were talking about all this time. After reading that title, I've researched it a bit and start hearing praises being sang to that game and its sequel, how it broke grounds, etc. and here I was, just expecting to find out what the initials stood for of THIS game that you made sound amazing. As I said, my mind was blown. Speaking of legendary titles, THIS is a legendary episode, I enjoyed every moment of it and definitely love learning about IPs I've never heard about and helping them achieve the fame they deserve. When I try these, I will strive to find a way how.

Yes! A perfect The Complete History in that I owned this game, bought used on a whim, and have very fond memories of it though so few people have heard of it. I'd put Silent Bomber in this camp as well. Check out that game (PS1) if you haven't.

Great episode mate. MDK 2 is one of my favourite Dreamcast games. Shame the series doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Keep up the good work man.
