Let’s all try to raise awareness and use short leaders for bull reds to prevent gut hooking . Love the channel not being that guy just trying to inform people .
@nickolasbilleau3598 Жыл бұрын
in my experience the leader length doesnt really matter too much, 3 ft is typical standard. gut hooking typically happens with j hooks and baits left out for an extended time without attention allowing it to be completely swallowed

Texas Parks and Wildlife specifies that you can’t use stainless steel hooks when “shark fishing”, and that would be up to the game warden’s opinion as to whether he/she thinks that is what you are doing. Wouldn’t it be smart to eliminate the opinion part by using black nickel and a non-offset hook as the regulations require for sharks?

The 3' bait leader is going to be pulled by the current, so it will be extended. It will entirely depend on the direction the fish swims when taking the bait before feeling the weight. If swimming up current, it could swim 6' before feeling it, if swimming with the current, it's going to feel it immediately. Just saying...

I get snagged alot when I use that style of setup at the jetties in corpus both packery and port a....To counter act that and avoid losing the entire rig I was thinking of going with a very light swivel so that I can hopefully break it free when it does get stuck....are those weights your using a better alternative to the typical large spider weight commonly sold at tackle shops....just trying to lose less gear...lol
@MDLRFishing Жыл бұрын
The jetty doesn't discriminate when it comes to taking gear. When you fish close to the rocks nothing is safe. Egg sinkers are not an alternative to spider weights. They both serve different purposes.

I’ve always wondered why guys are putting size 12/0 and larger hooks on bull red leaders. Go anywhere else and the biggest hooks being used for bulls is a 7/0.
@MDLRFishing Жыл бұрын
Not sure but one thing's for sure, a 7/0 will get the job done 👍.
