Thank you for the tutorial! I followed the instruction on both videos (Part 1 & Part2) for my 06 MDX. Everything worked out perfectly in the end.. The only thing that gave me a hard time was loosening the harmonic balancer bolt. Took me about an hour to finally getting it to loosen up. Once I get the harmonic balancer out, everything else went smoothly with the replacement of the water pump, timing belt and timing belt tensioner. Thanks again! I saved a ton of money!

Assuming you don’t have a lift like here in the video, what tool did you used to loosen the harmonic balancer bolt?

I just did this job on my sister's 2003 Honda Pilot last week before I saw this video. I've also done this on a 1999 Honda Odyssey with a similar engine except the timing belt tensioner is designed slightly differently. I basically did mine the same way as in the video except I replaced the crankshaft oil seal as a precaution even though it wasn't leaking. I left the old camshaft seals though. Although there are other designs of Honda crank holding tools, I used the same one in the video.

awesome video man!! I was gonna post one myself that's short and sweet like yours cuz I hate long videos. you pointed out all the important stuff and skipped the minor stuff .....awesome job

I'm about to try this, what are the "minor stuff"??

Very informative video but may I suggest that you place the engine at TDC compression stroke and Mark the cam pulleys to the heads and the crank pulley to the block so you can be assured that once removed there is little chance of a costly oops as you now have a valid reference for all pulleys. Also once you've lined everything up I would just cut the belt off and save a few minutes of hassle... other than that this looks like a snap to do..
@psychofish73007 жыл бұрын
I would only add that in the final step before you remove the actual timing belt, remove and discard the spark plugs, then turn the crank to TDC so that all three timing gears are in correct position. Then slice off the old belt so you don't have to remove the tensioner under pressure. You will not want to rotate the cams or the crank once the timing belt is untensioned, or removed. This is an interference engine - rotating the the crank or any of the cams independently of each other can cause bent valve and cracked valveguides.

Hendrick Honda in Concord NC did my 02' MDX for $800. Replaced all belts, new coolant too and provided me with a free 24hr rental.

@bubthegreat1. I bought all of the parts from honda and had one of the local mechanic shop installed it. I replaced a timing belt, hydraulic tensioner, pulleys, water pump pretty much everything in that compartment. I SPent $400 on parts and $300 on installation. THe procedure was very long. It took close to 6 hours to complete the job. Now my car is running great. However, when the mechanic took out all of the parts, they seem like brand ew when i have 95000k on the car.

It costs over a grand because you are taking it to the dealer or a place where they are raping you. Avg in my area is 800-600 with parts. In my other car you have to remove the front end; the MDX is a joy to work on. These V6's engines are rock solid, I've owned three now. Thank you for this video.

Thanks. I'd also add changing front crankshaft and camshaft seals.

My 2005 Toyota Camry has a timing chain, I'm so happy. My wife insisted on the 2005 Aura for herself. Timing belt!! I hate timing belts!! You never know when they are going to break...60K?...80K?...120K? I would never consider another Acura as long as they keep using belts!
@dark41377 жыл бұрын
Timing belts are not a bad thing, as long as you follow the factory maintenance schedule for replacing them.

ON THESE ENGINES: What does it mean when you suspect an oil leak is coming from the top?Like the oil filter /Vts area
@sock9796 жыл бұрын
You should really add in the video that you have to take off the serpentine belt to get to the bottom Bolt for the power steering or how taking off the top timing cover closest to the front of vehicle you have to literally move the tensioner forward to pull it out and you'll have to do that to get to the last bolt holding that timing cover on

@PJON214 Wow, go Honda!! So, my 2003 Accord that has 102k miles on it, I shouldn't sweat too much about having the TB changed at 105k ?
@jonphanspromotions13 жыл бұрын
@117nathanmyers. when they took out the pulleys, tensioner, seals, everything was in very good shape even the timing belt. I think they last a lot more than the manufacture stated. I am cautious so i changed everything accordingly. Oh well, now I don't have to worry about it for another 100k.

i am thinking about replacing a timing belt and water pump on my 2003 honda accord v6 coupe. Is the procedure the same or atleast similar? THanks
@bubthegreat113 жыл бұрын
@PJON214 Did you ever get a response? I need to replace my belt for my 03 v6 6spd Accord. What else are you replacing besides the water pump ?
@bubthegreat113 жыл бұрын
@117nathanmyers I prefer to use OEM water pump and timing belt. Do you recommend a better alternative or lower priced one vs the dealership? I wouldn't go to a dealer, but buy from an online source selling OEM parts for less, usually 30%
@jonphanspromotions13 жыл бұрын
According to some mechanics, they told me that i didnt have to replace the hydraulic tensioner, the seals unless they show leakage. I replaced it anyway because i dont want to be bother from it for another 100k miles.

It's a real shame Honda did things this way.... I have never known another vehicle where it costs over $1000 in labor just to change a timing belt. We love our MDX, but this engineering problem has really made me question buying another Honda in the future.

whats a fair cost of a job like this for my 03 acura mdx? thats replacing the idler,tensioner,waterpump and timing belt correct? and where is the best place to get job done at dealer or any car shop ?

This kind of garage or pit is the ONLY way I trust getting under a car,jack?NOPE,not even a oil change,all it takes is for a dummy,or a kid to mess around near it,lifts should be available to everyone at hourly rates of course..but there should be stations just lined with them..good business idea
@Milehighsnake9811 жыл бұрын
Because then idiots can't be suckered into spending $1000 on a new $80 timing belt every 4 years. Plus, it seems foreign companies don't know how to make a good timing chain that doesn't stretch.
