I can finally share this here on KZbin! I joined this competition back in June/July 2020 and couldn't share anything until the results were announced. Getting awarded 3rd place in such an important competition is incredible, this is a young team that we put together and we're looking forward to joining more competitions in the future.

I really liked the solutions presented for the project, from the many options created to the graphic and technical representation. As a suggestion: I would like to see a new video about the real design process for architecture competitions! What to consider and what to avoid? Congratulations Oliver and your friends!! 🥳 We are doing apartments for our studio project this semester as well and your board provided a lot of inspirations, especially that aerial diagram! 😍🙌 May I ask how do you use Vray on Archicad? Do you convert the model to Sketchup and render Vray with Sketchup?
@LearnUpstairs
@LearnUpstairs Жыл бұрын
Hey Pei Kai! Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad this video has inspired you 😄 As for Vray, yes it was exported from Archicad to Sketchup so that I could render the model using Vray. This is not such an ideal workflow, but with every change, we managed to then export only the new part and "paste it in place" in Sketchup.

@LearnUpstairs
@LearnUpstairs Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Man ti Yeon! There are a couple of reasons we were able to use Archicad on such a short time. 1. They have a well curated template. It’s not something you download off a website, but refine over the years. So all that initial file setup goes really fast. 2. They are used to working in Archicad and have done a couple of project similar to this one we did (Apartment buildings) 3. We also used Archicad connected over the cloud. That allows for multiples people to use the same file at once. The tip is to practice! 😅 You need to design and document different types of project to learn in full. And watch a lot of tutorials! That helps a lot 🙌

Well done on the design, it looks very good. What did you get for third place? As a professional in the industry, I just want to say what I think about Architectural Competitions: Architectural Competitions are cancer! And although you are right to be proud of your design, you should not romanticise the Competition Process. Spending weeks on a design for no fee should be left in the Studios of Architecture School when you graduate. Now I know this is fantasy because the industry now expects Architects to compete with each other for free (blame Architects for setting that precedent in the first place), but it shouldn't be romanticised. From a design point of view be proud, but as a business you have failed and your gamble has not paid off. I suppose it doesn't matter because you can always add it to your portfolio? Yeah, I've heard that one before too. Or in your case - make a YT video out of it. Competing against 100 other architects? - might a well play the lottery. Even contractors will refuse to participate in tendering a job if there are too many competitors.
@LearnUpstairs
@LearnUpstairs Жыл бұрын
Hey Craig, thanks a lot! And also, I appreciate the extensive input. I agree with you in many ways, but there are also points I have a different opinion on. I see competitions as this option to tackle projects you wouldn't normally do with regular clients. A type of challenge where you're a bit more "free" to develop a solution you truly believe in, as opposed to a set of specifications the client wants just because. There's also one other important factor I see... for example in the case of Olmo, they're a very young practice that won't necessarily have the opportunity to bring on that type of project that early in their career. They have worked as Architects in other firms so they've got that experience, but it depends on networking on a lot of other things to land such a huge contract. Competitions give you that opportunity to show your skills. Landing a project like such can turn the firm around and put them in the spotlight where other clients might hire them because of such achievement. If someone wins amongst 100 firms at a national level, that must mean something. Yes you "work for free" if you don't win anything, from a business perspective risks like that may not be possible. Maybe someday will be a better solution... But Idk, not everything is about money, there's a different rush in joining competitions, so why not then mix that type of project with regular clients if possible? The last comment I'll add is that there are competitions and there are "competitions". We usually take a close look at the rules and guides before deciding to join them. Because if you win it, there's a whole lot of work ahead of you, and it needs to be fairly paid. Hopefully, my reply wasn't too harsh, at least that wasn't my intention 😅 Again, thanks a lot for your comment, that's what the comment section should also be about! Have a great weekend, Craig!
@LearnUpstairs
@LearnUpstairs Жыл бұрын
Oh, I forgot to answer the first question! First place R$50k + R$350k contract to develop the project until Construction Drawings. The second place got R$30 or 35k I don't remember actually. And then the third place was R$15k. If you want to convert that to USD, it's 5 R$ (real) to 1 USD, but you also need to remember that the industry pays a lot differently depending o the country. Architects in the US get paid A LOT, I mean A LOT more than architects in South America, or more specifically in Brazil which is where I'm based.

Yeah if you think about it this way we had one less thing to think about 😄 But we started thinking on the board 2 or 3 weeks before submitting the work. We didn't have the project solved, but based on the scales they asked for and site size we already drafted how the board could look like.
