It has been a while since I made a gain/crossover setting video and this 5 channel Gately Audio G5-1700D was perfect for the job. When watching this video, keep in mind that these speakers are all sitting on a table, open air and cancelling themselves out (each speaker). So It for sure is not going to sound as good like this as it would if you had them in your vehicle with the front/rear cones separated from each other. Also, gains should be set with everything completely flat which they are in this video. Once that is done, you can move on to any EQ'ing that needs to be done to actually fix any issues. You will find that once your gain is set properly and the crossovers are calibrated precisely with each other, you won't need to do nearly as much EQ'ing. A little nudge here and there and that is about it. Same for bass/treble controls on the head unit. Remember all knobs to the right? Well that is a sign your gains are not set correctly. Once they are, you may find yourself barely touching those at all! Anyway, thanks for watching the video if you did. I had fun making it! I also think I should give these speakers away, what do you think? Stay tuned, I will probably sign the cone and randomly go live and make it someone's lucky day! Subscribe, like and hit that notification button, thanks!

Gains should be set with the speaker UNHOOKED. Setting gains with speakers hooked up is loud, annoying and not good for them. We use sine waves to get you into a good place but they usually don't like it for too long... so it's best to disconnect during this procedure. This is already factored in with the DD-1's patented technology to offset the amp not being under load (while setting gains). Whether it is a DD-1 or an O-scope, setting gains while the speakers are screaming in your face is a bad idea. After being set with a sine wave you are usually never going to see that kind of stress while playing actual music which is dynamic in nature. So you should be good to go. But like i said, the DD-1 doesn't do it all. You STILL have to be smart and pay attention to your system, make appropriate changes based on what your settings are doing. There are so many variables, common sense and some real world experience should always come into play.

if they don't at LEAST bust out a scope (and the proper procedures which happen to be the same as a DD-1), then they should NOT be running a shop. It's sad how many shops don't have qualified people touching customer cars.

I always tuned by ear and then I learned how to use a scope. That’s been my go to. Next year I’m doing an old school Kicker SQ install and taking it to Stillwater. John Myers invited me on their show. I’m finally smartening up and ordering the SMD’s from the man himself to tune it. Can’t wait!

That Gately 5 channel looks like an attractive option, both looks and power wise, when I go to do a full install in my T-Bird. That old school anodized color with a lexan window box would really tie the trunk together for that 90s look. Front door crossovers on prominent display as well of course.😁

a sad day (or a great one), depending how you look at it when the CUSTOMER brings specialized tools to a shop and asks them to use them. I mean in the VERY LEAST that shop should have said "we use O-scopes here". Even then you have to hope they use the proper procedure. 99% of the video's I have seen on the internet with people showing how to set gains with a scope are doing it 100% wrong. The standard issue, classic blue SMD DD-1 uses the same procedure as someone would with a scope if they are doing it correctly. The DD-1+ is different of course but that is another conversation. Anyway, thank you for the comment it never gets old hearing how happy people are with their purchase :) :)

Hey Steve, is there a hidden industry secret book that explains all of these things your explaining? or has this just been knowledge you have picked up up over the years. I have your entire set of DD1 tools and I would love to learn how to utilize them properly on my system. I can set the gains fine, but having an understanding of how overlap works and what frequencies to use on subs, mids & highs and what and when to use it would be a massive help. I appreciate all you do for us in the car audio realm. Cheers, mate.

I have a DD1, works great. I use -0db tones for both bass amp and mids and highs, alot of music on Apple music is right at -0db, Apple music is a much louder source than Spotify, yes I know you can adjust the volume in the Spotify app, even on the loud setting it still isnt as loud as Apple music. If I use Apple music and tune the amps at -5db itll clip, but with -0db its just right.
@meade916
@meade916 9 ай бұрын
that isn't how it works. I would never use a 0db track for anything except the headunit or processor in front of the amps. The amps themselves should always have a little bit of overlap. That is the point of setting gains. You are leaving free output on the table doing that.

A little late to the party, I've always tuned the way Steve does, I've had a question though, if the headunit max undistorted volume is for example 48, could I use 45 as a max volume and go through the chain with my DD1+? Or is it best to use the actual max undistorted volume? I also always tune 0dB for highs and 5dB for subs since most customers use my rebassed tracks.
@meade916
@meade916 5 ай бұрын
0db for highs is way to low. A waste of free output. 3-5 is recommended. 10 for the subs unless they are overpowered in that case you could drop it a little. As for the max volume of the headunit you can use 45 even if 48 is the number that you got but you are cheating yourself or the customer out of a couple clicks in his range. No sense in that.
