If you don't use tomato paste very often, you can freeze it in ice cube trays to save it. Measure how much you put into each cube so you can thaw just what you need. Vacuum sealing the cubes after you take them out of the tray is better than a ziplock for preventing ice crystals.

Thank you for adding this tip. I have a #10 can of tomato paste that I’ve been wanting to open and dehydrate. I will put it in ice cube trays and once frozen will freeze dry in our dryer. Portioned like that I will know how much I am using when I go to rehydrate it. Thanks!

When needing only a little Tomato Paste for this or that recipe, I use the Tomate Paste that comes in a tube. There are usually only 6-12 tall skinning boxes hidden on the top shelf in the International Food section. It keeps longer in the refrig after opening the tube. Less spoilage, because of exposure to the air.

thankyou for this lovely recipe RoseRed Pam I made your soap and used white beans that were soaked overnight as the meat substitute it turned out very well. I dont have a dehydrator yet but Ive been chopping up a carrot and onion and a celery and drying it in the oven at the end of every oven "session" by turning the oven down to 100 degrees centigrade. The carrots if cooked after a sweet dish has been in the oven are good to be used in quick carrot cakes. I never thought of any of this until I saw your channel.

Ooooo Ooooo I timed it right ✅️ I was so excited that I'd found you earlier in the day that I'd forgotten to mention that a "small" gesture you made taught me yet again. Ziplock bags, baggies, you get the picture. You put the ziplock flat down and ran the tracks together such that they sealed out a lot of air. It really impressed me. I had NEVER done that, I held it up and connected the tracks. Then it hit me why should I use my brain when I have your two brain Tee hee hee just kidding. Thank you for being such great examples in many ways. ❤️

I am not a canner but I am thinking a can of roast beef from the grocery store would work just as well. I love the butane stoves. I purchased my first 3 in the early 90s for $5 each. I use then not only for camping but also in hotel rooms when traveling.

My sister does Freeze drying, and she did a bunch of trays of cooked barley for me to make up some of my r Beef Barley Soup. I layered my freeze dried barley, beef, potato chunks, green beans, corn, carrots with the garlic and onion in the bags. I also add the powdered tomato if I decide to add that to the soup mix. I use dried bouillon when I make up these. Then we Vacuum seal the bags. I usually allow a quart and a half of water to reconstitute the soup. But it is so easy to just open the bags to make up how ever much soup we want based on the group size. I basically just need to bring the water to a boil and simmer for a short time until all the freeze dried items have reconstituted. Makes a quick dinner.

I just ordered barley recently, but have not used it yet. I was thinking of making a beef and barley soup or stew when I ordered it. The only barley I've ever had was the barley in the Campbell's can of beef and barley soup. Anyway, planning on making beef stew for my 90-year-old Aunt who is coming to visit tomorrow, along with a loaf of crusty bread. I don't know if I will try the barley since I've never done it before, I don't want it to be a flop! I will make it when it's just us here. Haven't watched your video yet, thought I would comment first. 😁

Pam, dehydrate or freeze dry your tomato paste. Then make it into a powder. To make the equivalent of 6 ounce can just add 1/4 cup of tomato powder to 1/4 to 1/2 cup hot water depending on the consistency you want. Powdered tomato paste would be perfect for these meals in a bag. If people can’t dehydrate or freeze dry tomatoes to make a powder then there are many good tomato powders online with just tomatoes as the ingredient. I’ve even made tomato sauce in a pinch with tomato powder.

Pam, sorry for posting twice but we just finished one of our favorite soups and I thought you and Jim may like it and it might be OK for your meal in a bag. It's Southwestern Turkey soup (I make it from a roast turkey carcass and meat). It has onion, garlic, carrot, celery, broth, black beans, corn, sweet peppers and tomatoes with green chilies, plus whatever spices you prefer, I add smoked paprika. This would easily work with ground beef or your canned chicken. I don't know if drained beans would be best or maybe your fast beans if they hold together. I just use canned. Anyway, I've gotten so many good ideas from you I wanted to possibly return the favor. We put crushed corn or tortilla chips on top and let them mix in, kind of like you'd use masa and top with sour cream. Thank you to you and Jim for all you do.

👋 Hi Pam n Jim! I love watching your vlogs, I keep learning stuff 🙂 I'm fixing to buy a canner and supplies for it, and give water bath canning a try.

Your freeze dried tomato powder might work just as well for tomato paste! I am loving what the freeze dryer can do!

Oh, that soup looks delicious!! Thank you both for sharing this. I can't wait to make this Meal In A Bag. I'm thinking I could add the Worcestershire sauce and the soy sauce to my beef chunks when canning them. Would that work? If not, maybe I can dehydrate the sauces and make a powder to put in with the spices. If I give this as a gift to someone who does not cook, like some of my elderly family members, they may not have Worcestershire or soy sauce. Or, someone just may be out of it. Lovely recipe. Thanks again! :)

Those are good points! Yes, a dried alternative would be great.

I'm sure you have a video on dehydrating the carrots, celery and onions? Thanks so much...

We do have videos on celery and onions, but not carrots. I buy those in #10 cans. I love to can carrots, but have never dehydrated them. But it would be easy to also do carrots.

Looks amazing! QUESTION: Since the cooking time is fairly long on this due to the barley, have you ever tried the Wonder Bag method on this recipe to see if that works? I've heard others say that rice does not work to thermal cook. I haven't tried it myself. Maybe it's different when it's IN a soup instead of just the grain...? I LOVE the thermal cooking idea and I'm starting to experiment due to your inspiration! 😊

Quick question. Can I use instant rice instead of barley? I'm from Louisiana and have never used pearl barley. I don't know if I can find it down here--never looked for it. I'm starting a speckled notebook for meals in jars/ bags. Thank you. Watching you use your butane stove, I've bought one for myself.

You can buy butane for the stove by the case of 12 on Amazon. It is much cheaper than at the stores.

Thank you! Looks yummy. I think I dehydrated tomato paste years ago and it turned into fruit leather. That's if I remember correctly. It could have been canned pumpkin. Lol

Hi ! I just found your channel and I am really enjoying it !! I am a newbee to dehydrating and you have helped me a lot. Could you tell me little bit more about the celery and baking soda ? I’ve never tried it before and my celery loses its color…. Thanks for all your hard work . Really appreciate it ❤❤❤
