When Cady says, "As much as I hate Regina, I still wanted her to like me" is literally the most ACCURATE sentence spoken about how you feel about a mean girl in high school. I love when Hollywood movies actually understand the dynamics in female friendships. This movie is a CLASSIC!!!!!! 😂🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Hey Kelsey, the story you shared about Jimmy Fallon, Amy & Tina in the writers room at SNL is from Amy Poehler's book, "Yes Please". Tina didn't say it, Amy did. Tina & Amy met during their time together in Chicago with the The Groundlings. They were in a touring company together. And lastly, sorry for being the "Actually..." person.

at the beginning, you don’t understand why regina thinks janis is a lesbian, despite it being a focal point of the plot. and at the end when she tells kevin g she’s LEBANESE, it goes over so many heads. just another reason to bow to tina fey.
@LiaRaye
@LiaRaye Жыл бұрын
I always thought the point was Regina had become so self absorbed she assumed that because Janis felt neglected as a friend and voiced that, Regina defaulted to "she must be in love with me and therefore a lesbian". This is echoed by Cady towards the end "its not my fault you're in love with me or something" because Janis was mad Cady ditched her art show to throw a party instead. History repeated itself.

I think it’s a miss to not talk about the homophobia toward lesbians. Being a lesbian was the worst possible thing a teen girl could be. And that could also be reflected of the sentiment of the early aughts but also Fey’s personal feelings. Watching this again as an adult who wasn’t out as a teen when I saw this I’m like, “ohhh this explains a lot about me and my mentality back then.” 😬 So it’s a full on guilty P for me but what a damn classic 🩷

i’m glad you touched on the weird antiblack and anti asian racism. i watched this for the first time as an adult and it was an “it has its moments” movie to me cuz the way they portrayed vietnamese kids, esp with the weird pedo plot, was sooo uncomfortable. i don’t think unchecked racism, and by extension any -ism/phobia, is okay and fey writes a lot of that into her work which gives me the ick. but it also makes sense-she’s a rich straight white cis woman. she writes what she knows but i think she needs to stick to that because that’s her strength. leave the rest of us out of it pls 😂 i’m surprised it’s a guilty pleasure for kelsey cuz i fully expected her to go full pleasy on it! loved the episode 💖 also kelsey you should read “they both die in the end” by adam silvera. you’ll bawl your eyes your eyes out.

Mean girls is a movie that got discussed and quoted so many times to the point that you don't actually need to watch it to know the whole plot. I never really watch it, but i know the whole plot and know which scenes you talked about just because i saw so many people discussed it and quoted it to this day. I believe Tina says in the commentary that they wanted the line to be "masturbated with a FROZEN hot dog" which is just wild. Also, when they were arguing with the MPAA about the rating, the MPAA objected to the "heavy flow and a wide set vagina" line citing it was too sexually suggestive. Team Mean Girls countered with the scene from Anchorman where Will Farrell walks around the news office with a visible boner and called the MPAA sexist for rejecting a line about menstruation and human anatomy with no sexual connotation whatsoever while letting Will Farrell walk around with a boner in a PG-13 movie. Unsurprisingly, the MPAA caved.

I’m only twenty minutes in so maybe they bring this up, but the accuracy of how teen girls bully is so well done. I’ve seen a lot of bully behavior in media and it’s very straightforward and like “give me your lunch money or I’ll beat you up”and I’m sure that does happen. It’s probably more accurate to how bullying was decades ago, but in my experience and the people around me’s experiences I’ve heard, more likely with girls rather than guys, it’s very passive aggressive. They act sweet but say things that are implicated and when you bring it up, they act dumb. It’s very calculated, but they pretend to be nice. And maybe that’s also a gender role thing where girls are taught to be lady like, but they find a way around it with subtle jabs at you and talking bad behind your back, very two faced. This is of course a generalization and every individual is different, but it’s a common theme that I’ve noticed. It reminds me of when I was a young girl in middle/high school and could tell someone was being mean to me, but I think i was too young to verbalize it and explain that type of meanness. It made me feel like it was all in my head.

@ItsBAndBees

I agree so much!! I felt so bullied and gossiped about as a young teen, but it was never like those dumb jocks in movies. Guys were always nice to me, it was the girls that were awful and never in an incriminating way that any adult would care. Just heard him liken the girls to Moriarty and yes, middle/HS is psychological warfare more often than it’s being shoved over.

I feel Garrick on the high school story. It wasn't until years later I found out all the kids who would be on NHS and key club and varsity sports were also all partying together. I ran into a classmate years after school at a bar and they were legit surprised to see me. We never spoke, so I was surprised they even knew who I was. And they said they figured I was boring and nerdy and wouldnt come to 'places like this'. In actuality my childhood SUCKED and I did all my partying and going crazy in college, not even a good one lol I feel you man!

And, going off how important this movie is to cultural references, I was in a club at my college and we all had nicknames. One of us was called Mean Girl because she worked at the college cafeteria before she was a student, but *everyone* thought she was our classmate, so she almost constantly had to tell people that she didn't even go to school with us, so once she finally did become a student and join our group, Mean Girl became the *obvious* choice for her name.
