Thank you very much for your excellent commentary of this important film. Mean Streets is a great example of the New American Cinema of the late sixties and early seventies, coming out in the year between the first two Godfathers (and it was De Niro's portrayal of Johnnyboy that led to his casting as the young Vito Corleone for part2). Hopefully, more people will get to see Mean Streets and compare it to Scorsese's later work.

Scorsese had already made "Who's that Knocking at My Door?" and "Boxcar Bertha".

Apparently a lot of New York mobsters and former mobsters consider Mean Streets the closest depiction of what it was actually like back then for street level guys. The Godfather is a classic obviously, but it's mostly fantasy/glamorised.

I loved this man! And I loved mean streets, so much, first time I watched it, I just hit replay. It felt real, it was very captivating. I grew such love for the characters. And every scene was interesting, the crazy amount of improvisation! As you said, it keeps you on edge, you never know what's coming next. You did an awesome analysis and its really cool to see that so many people love this movie.

I like your idea of Charlie touching flames because he's drawn to the dangerous aspects of life, but it's also a pretty explicit reflection of his Catholic faith. He knows he's a bad person, and therefore he believes he's going to Hell. Touching flames is his way of preparing himself before he gets there.

I'm ashamed to say that before a week ago I had never seen or even heard of mean streets. but now I've probably seen it at least twice, maybe 3 times and I'm definitely gonna watch it a couple times just to see the characters interact. i donno man, there's something about this film. it doesn't even feel like a film cos it feels so natural. the characters and the dialogue are so good and memorable.the actors don't feel like actors but real people, it flows so well. i end up watching 20 minutes and before i know it i end up burning through the whole film. i love the low budget grainy urban nature of it. it's kind of beautiful actually. I'm not from new york but it kinda reminds me of my childhood. great movie. i don't know exactly why but it just is. i donno, there's just nothing like a good gangster movi. maybe it's not as classic as scarface or goodfellas or once upon a time in america but definitely one to come back to several times over.

This movie is so damn great I just hope the audio quality was better and that the editing wasn't so rough. Then again it may have been deliberate to convey this sense of street-level crime.

Those day shots of NY are so gritty. Dirty rough place Manhattan was.

He says more about people and life in this film than he does in almost any of his other films, with the exception of the Last Temptation of Christ.

Finally, I knew that there were still some more people who thought this movie was one of Scorsese's best along with his more polished works. This movie used to be considered a classic when it came out and even well into the '90s, but as Marty did more polished movies like Casino, Gangs of New York, and The Departed, the movie all of a sudden faded into obscurity when it’s a lot more than that. The movie is full of symbolism like when Charlie puts his finger into the flames but he doesn’t want to because he is getting a taste into what Hell is like and the red colored bar. This has probably become one of Martin Scorsese's most under-appreciated and forgotten works because of how guerilla and low budget it is, but that shouldn’t be an excuse for this movie to be rarely talked about when talking about Scorsese and when some people do, they talk about how dated it is and how that’s apparently a bad thing, but this was his third movie and this was before Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed so what were they expecting early in his career. It reminds me of how Tarantino's Jackie Brown got overlooked because of the fact that it came out after Pulp Fiction and after that, Quentin made Kill Bill which is where he found his style that he is now known for, but the difference is Jackie Brown found its respect and due and Mean Streets didn't. Nice to see someone trying to give Mean Streets the level that it remained if it wasn’t for his other films trampling it down deep into the dirt and becoming even more irrelevant as time went on. But, that’s the internet for you.

I agree man mean streets needs to be assessed again today, it's an incredibly influential film and the beginning of the gangster movies we saw through the 80s and 90s, really agree with your comparison about Jackie brown it really is applicable, I really think ppl need to start seeing mean streets low budget as a positive, because the movie is perhaps the most accurate street gangster movie ever made

Type on Google it's literally listed as a crime film you Wally, also it's very forgotten in the context of scorsese because it didn't make the mammoth impact his later ones did, try harder mate.

The "rights" to use the songs in the film ballooned the budget by $300k. Money that Mr. Scorsese had to borrow from Francis Coppola. That little nugget was mentioned last night (06/28/23) when the film was hosted by Ben Mankiewicz on TCM.
