Could it be that this was such a great movie because it was a true story? Perhaps we’ll never know.

Ace and Nicky had personal flaws but one thing that they shared was pride over things they can't control at least Ace made sure that his business never got him into the deepest of troubles and got lucky enough to avoid the fate of Nicky. Nicky had the personal trust and confidence of Remo, even he realized by the end he should have reign him in that's why they had him killed by his own crew to send a message and to deliver a punishment for Nicky's behaviour. Never mess with the dollars

i liked this flick and "LONG GOOD FRIDAY" but i always thought that most british gangster flicks always had a fruity comedic quality about them especially the 2 flicks made about the 'KRAY' brothers. either way, STING is quite good as an actor even though he didn't do it much. same with BOWIE i wuda liked to see more of both in front of the camera.

as far as big time cockney actors i woulda loved to see BOB HOSKINS and RAT WINSTONE in a movie together. especially if it's a flick somehow related to crime or the dark side of life in general that would bin top notch. some sorda britsh gangster flick with the two of them could not possibly be less than awesome. as far as this movie though i always kinda thought what would an upper class "public school" girl be doing hanging around with cockney gangsters. the whole cast of this flick is incredible totally bad ass but that aspect of the movie always struck me as highly unlikely. HELEN MIRREN was great in the role as she always was either way.

Harolds losing it scene truly brilliant in its ferocity. Harolds often funny and sarcastic comments totally relax you (the viewer) then bam, he bottles him all the build up that has been drawimg the viewer in And also shows off Hoskins range and the guy from vasulty (and a possibly better career than being stuck in casualty for 30+years)

I haven't seen this one, so I don't want to spoil it for myself by watching this review. But I'll give you a like, anyway. I haven't seen Bob Hoskins in much. But I really like him as an actor. I know him mostly from _Super Mario Bros._ (a guilty pleasure for me) and _Who Framed Roger Rabbit._ Thanks for adding another movie to my watch list.

About the only decent thing in Enemy at the gates. Watch it IMMEDIATELY after watching the Long Good Friday. I think he also played Lavrenti Beria in another film.

@scotsbillhicks hoskins coasted in a lot of pictures. Whether this was cos Hollywood really didn't offer him anything better I no idea. But he was a phenomenal actor. Great as owney madden teamed up with Fred gynne and they make great double act in The Cotton club (84)

This could be totally out in left field but I just watched this the other night again and now I think that the ending of this movie very much reminds me of the ending of GoldenEye... Obviously two totally different movie endings but man they are very similar in how they both are fighting each other in this little arena

it wouldve been better if sure they made the sandersons super evil but make them still comedic. or they give a reason for making them act better eating those beauty products made them sick now theyr not acting normal or a new scene where they accidentally drink something alchoholic and get drunk and thats why they act better or something

"It doesn't feel like a film." I felt that too. Ironically, that broke the immersion for me, momentarily, when I found myself noticing. Unfortunately, that's how unusual it is for a movie to feel so real. Great review/analysis, by the way. Thanks for sharing.

since this gentlemen is obvs. english (i'm yankee but lived in manchester 2 1/2 years with an english gf) let me just say that both movies about the KRAY twins would've been one thousand times better had SCORSESE directed them. both weren't bad but had a certain comical, GUY RICHIE sorda feel about them which is fine fer a GUY RICHIE flick but a movie about the KRAYs...... and yes i know alot of ppl. would say a movie about british gangsters needs to be directed buy an english person but in both cases, imo, they failed at it.

Remember picking up the VHS tape at a Blockbuster when it came out strictly because of Melanie Griffith. Had a crush on her in the 80's. Loved it and just rewatched it last month. It really holds up. It has a pretty sudden ending and I always have hoped Melanie and Sean's characters had a future. The critique of capitalism is one I've always found rather odd. Would you prefer socialism or maybe good ole communism. I bet a lot of Brits would ache for those bad old days compared to the shite that is Modern England. Never really noticed it in the 90s but watching Stormy Monday in 2024 interesting how overwhelmingly white the film was. That was when England was England.

Exactly! When you see them pop up incongruously and needlessly it just makes you think why? Well it comes down to funding, they have to put them in, how pathetic is that

Why do people call movies like this 'oddball?' It's a great psychological allegory about how a chap can be caught and smothered in the negative aspects of 'the feminine' if he's helpless. What's wrong that people can't 'read' a film any more? The Civil War backdrop is only a setting. I'd bet that the fellas who think this movie oddball may be in for some shocks when some day they fall into a powerless relationship. It's a great movie.

My read on the scene is that Hanna gets a slight edge on McCauley for 2 reasons. 1: Neil reveals that he lives by the 30 second rule, but that he also has someone in his life who could foreseeably make him break it. This comes full circle in the closing moments. 2: Vincent understands his own dream about the murder victims at his dinner table, but Neil misunderstands his dream about drowning alone when he says it’s about not having enough time. Clearly, judging by Mann’s direction in earlier scenes, it’s about Neil finding connection/companionship. Hanna gets an understanding into Neil’s life and psyche, while McCauley doesn’t learn anything he didn’t already know from Nate’s detailed report on him. As Nate says, Hanna can afford to hit or miss, but McCauley can’t

Eastwood definitely showing a different side and changing his image again. I disliked the films initially as a kid (mainly cos Clint dosent shoot anyone) but as his filmography grown -as have my years. There innocence and charm has carried them along. Crucially though it's Eastwoods relationship with Clyde that cements them to ppls memories. A sad but terrible thing the bastard who owned the first "Clyde" beat the orangutan to death. And in the second film a replacement was found. Great review as always
