Hands down the best drill I've come across for feeling lag and ball compression. I always knew I was casting and not getting the full distance and consistency. Tried many tips without success, but this drill instantly gave me the feeling of lag. When I went back to normal setup after, first strike was a holy s* moment. At the range, I do 10 closed-face practice swings then hit with neutral setup. Still working on consistency (hip getting close to the ball, head lifting) but this drill really has me excited. Thanks Piers and Andy from Seattle!

I tried this today with a few balls on the range. 1st ball - left with a hook. 2nd ball - shanked it right. 3rd ball - left with a hook. 4th ball - straight with a hook. 5th ball - right with a slight draw. 6th ball - straight. 7th ball - slight right with a draw back center. 8th ball - sped up tempo and straightened club head a bit...BANG! Slight right with draw to center. 9th ball - BANG, 10th ball - BANG!!! Awesome trajectory and contact with divot target side of ball. AWESOME!!! I'll have to practice it some more, but loved this drill and think I may have found the yards that I have lost.

I'm a real newbie but am finally starting to get some traction on my shots. Applied this tip at the range tonight, first few balls went screaming to the right (im a lefty) as you said they would but after a while was able to commit to the lag and started hitting some nice shots. Felt better on contact with the ball and put on another 20-30m on my usual range. Cheers! Liked and subscribed.

Dear Andie and Pearce Very interesting. My pro has worked on my lag by getting me to line up straight but to start the ball on a line just right of straight by putting a second ball about a foot in front and just to the right of the target line. By swinging on this line you get a similar effect without having to manipulate the club face. Love your videos, you and Mark Crossfield are the tops! Alistair Hamilton

Exactly right! I struggled producing lag for years, until I realized by watching video with my pro that the club face was wide open half way down. My only choice was to cast or it would go right of the earth. By strengthening my grip and thereby closing the clubface coming down, all of a sudden I was able to produce the lag that no amount of effort before had succeeded in doing.

@LAPStorm7 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what my pro told me to do that i dismissed after a few shots after the lesson, it doesn't mean that for the rest of my golfing days i will be setting up with the golf face pointing away from the target but so that i can get used to not having to compensate on the latter stages of the down swing before i hit the ball thus losing any power. Again i was a hooker when i started. 2 hours till the range opens can't wait to get down and get on with this! I am used to hitting very flighty balls so this is also going to seem quite a change for a while but if i want to get better i have to bite the bullet and it might as well be today. Thanks guys.

Quite interesting - 18 months ago, I was feeling that I was not getting the clubhead closed at impact so I started closing it at address to compenstate and hit more squarely. I used to have a problem where I could hit my 3,4,5,6 iron very far and then there was a 30 yard drop off to my 7. With those other clubs I wasn't taking a divot at all but it worked because those clubs don't need as much shaft lean. I learned to hit my 7,8,9, PW by putting the ball on my right pinky toe (right handed golfer) and basically just chopped the ball. It forces to swing directly down on it, which will teach you to get the lag It worked for me, might work someone else.

Hi ! Great video with a great drill to test... As usual ! ;) I personally need to work on that as I look to have the same swing 'fault' as Craig (and as so many other amateurs ! haha). But then a question comes to me : I think I often slice the driver then because I am swinging it with the same kind of intention / motion as the one you describe here for the irons! Does that mean this is completely different for the driver (apart from the set-up and taking the ball on an "up motion") ie. different in the intention ? but still with some lag !...
@golfninja649211 жыл бұрын
Pat Legrand To get solid contact with the ball on the ground the low point of your swing arc needs to be a couple of inches target side of the ball which is why you look to have hands leading a forward leaning shaft through impact. With the driver off the tee you're looking to have the low point of your swing arc a couple inches before the head reaches the ball so your angle of attack is upwards through impact. To do this with the driver you need to work more with the feeling of your left arm & flat left wrist & club shaft reaching impact in a straight line, the hands still get there first but not with forward leaning shaft. If you try to have a lot of 'impact lag' forward leaning shaft, hands well ahead with the driver, the swing into impact will be too steep and have a downwards AoA which you don't want and it will also leave the face of the driver open you won't be able to square it up through impact.

A question I thought of while trying this drill: should I keep the club face closed FOREVER? As in, once I've gotten this down, do I continue to keep the club face closed for all future games? This seems weird, since I don't think most pros (who are masters of the lag) close their irons at address. That said, I struggle wit a slice, and this drill was helping a lot to get lots of power and hit the ball straight still.
@darrensten10 жыл бұрын
Very interesting, just wondering if that would work for me? I play with a closed club face due to a strong right hand grip but I push or slice my long irons to the right. I'm a member on the website, is there any other drills you would recommend for this?
@meandmygolf.10 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren. If your bad shot is to the right, we would fix that first. It's very hard to increase lag when the ball goes to the right. They key thing is finding out why your shot is going right. Is it swing plane or club face that is causing the problem?

If I successfully practice with this drill and obtain the right level of shaft lean at impact, should I continue from now on to play with a consciously closed club face? Or can I then return to my regular grip and neutral face at address there after?
@FitFast88 жыл бұрын
Its clear all it is that he's moving his upper and lower body more or less together. Move the lower body sooner, or a little more dynamically so the lower body is in position before impact happens (hips open, pushing into the left heel). If he didnt early release he'd actually miss the ball-that's his only choice with a lower body being so far out of position.
@chikenwangz123459 жыл бұрын
Hi Meandmygolf I was wondering if you knew any suggestions that I could try to fix my ball strike and impact. The ball flight is always very low compared to my friends on my golf team, but the ball goes pretty far. I wanted to try to make it go a little higher so I can land the ball on greens without it rolling off all the time. I hear all the time I have a really nice swing but maybe there was something I'm missing in my swing to make the ball go higher in the air. Could it just come with more practice? This has been a problem for me for a while and I want to just get it fixed so I can move on to new things. By the way my grip has already been looked at by my coaches so I don't think it would be too much of a problem.
@chikenwangz123459 жыл бұрын
Also I'm hitting my drivers alright and my wedges perfect. My iron and wedge shots do have more of a draw, but it is pretty controllable. My drivers on the other hand always have a fade which I can't control as much. So that could also be an effect of the problem in my swing.

@Jackslav11 жыл бұрын
Good question! I wonder the same.
@rossadamdixon11 жыл бұрын
jackslav My suggestion would be that the actual impact lag they would want you to get in a full swing would not be as much as is required to get the ball to go right of the post. The drill I would think is designed to learn a feeling. Once in a full swing with proper release while incorporating better impact lag the ball will not go as far right as you would expect but will launch lower, spin lower with faster club head speed and smash factor.
@jpjeffery11 жыл бұрын
Ross Dixon Agreed, it's a drill to make yourself go to an extreme in the opposite of what you're doing wrong, then come back from that extreme to find the happy medium of the 'right place'. Although I think having said this drill should only be done at the range (because of the risks) they should probably make it clear that one should continue at the range to find that 'right place' with the square-at-address club face.
@meandmygolf.11 жыл бұрын
Yes guys this is definitely an extreme option designed to give you the correct feeling at impact. The majority of golfers will actually struggle to hit it straight and the ball will mainly go right. When they return back to the square face, you should be able to find the middle with a better feeling of where impact is.
@piertiong11 жыл бұрын
Will this cause shots to go right when they adjust the club face to point straight at address? Or is it just a matter of shifting the grip from weak to strong.
@meandmygolf.11 жыл бұрын
The key thin is then to work on this feeling you have of shaft lean but ensuring you can return the club square. Slow swings to impact should allow you to get the feeling of de lofting the club but keeping the face square.
@rollotomassi239010 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think the grip should change in order to affect the shot direction. Captured baby bird in my hands serves me well.

Very nice! But always keep the line up of your club-face exactly towards your target. Just adjust the alignment of your body whether you want to draw or fade. This way you never miss your target too much left right. Consistency is all you are looking for in seek of that level par game ;-)

Hi guys, so for someone like Andy who has good impact lag anyway would the ball not just go straight left with this drill. Normally he would be square to target strike the ball with good impact lag and the ball would fly straight to target. How is it when he aims left here strikes the ball with good lag it flies right of where the club face is pointing. Cheers Jon

I was wondering if this is a bad thing or not and it is a bad this could this fix it. Thanks
@meandmygolf.10 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are delivering far too much loft at impact. This could be due to a few reasons but is often an open club face some where. You can definitely fix this. I would start with looking at the grip first.

Won't this drill train me to hold off the clubface or hit a block type of impact? After switching back to a square clubface I'd imagine the balls would be pushed to the right. I feel you have left out that part of the explanation. Please explain.
@meandmygolf.8 жыл бұрын
Great point. yes you need to still be able to square the club face through impact. This drill will help creating the feeling of trailing the golf club but yes you still need to find a drill to square the club face if ball flight dictates. We have plenty of drills to help that too.
@keithblumfield274510 жыл бұрын
Guys, I can see the point about closing the club face and then leaning it at impact gets it back square, however, what happens if you set up with a square club face to the target and then lean the shaft, won't that open it up again?

You can close the clubface at address, then easily early release it into the ground a foot behind the ball with the face looking away from you. Try it right there in your living room folks. This ain't no fix. Plus, plenty of really good players have had the face more open at the top, like uh Jack Nicklaus. PS: I wish you had those sudden loud garbage-can sound-effect bangs do that to you a few times while you try to relax and sleep at night.
@chestermicek10 жыл бұрын
50% of the time, I'm a flipper. I think that is due to a complete misconception of what the golf swing is. First of all, the golf swing is a dance move. Writing of just the irons, the golf dance is designed to deliver the club head to the ball, in a descending blow, with the hands ahead of the club. After impact, the club takes turf as the right arm straightens. If words could help a duffer like me, it might help to describe the swing as the back-swing to the forward ball gouge.
