13 Reasons Why season 4 is the finale of the powerful yet controversial teen drama. The series is based on the novel 13 reasons why by Jay Asher. But the show differs much from the book. Hannah Baker's life had a different ending, and the timeline was expanded with stories of Clay Jensen and other characters.
While the creators of 13 Reasons Why wanted their show to help struggling teenagers, they were widely criticized for brutally honest manner and painful scenes. That's why two years after the show premiered, Netflix removed the most traumatizing moment from season 1.
13 Reasons Why soundtrack choice was not random. Dylan Minnette helped to pick songs that reflect the vibe of the story. The soundtrack includes the tracks by Joy Division and New Order, and these bands had their own similar tragic story. Selena Gomez, who is one of the executive producers of the show, wanted to portray Hannah Baker, but eventually her input was made through her music featuring in the series.
13 Reasons Why season 3 has some striking parallels with another Netflix teen drama - Elite. Both shows explore the murder of the high school student through two simultaneous timelines.
To help 13 Reasons Why cast handle their roles, the show creators brought support on the set. Therapy dogs were working alongside mental health consultants to keep the actors in the positive mindset between the takes.
One of the important visual details was tattoos of the underage characters that reflect their challenging personal stories. But the ink was used by the cast off-set, too. The actors marked 13 Reasons Why season 1 finale with identical semicolon tattoos - symbol of people who battle depression.

In my opinion it was an important scene. It showed the reality of a suicidal person and to what extent depression can make them do things no matter how much they will suffer while doing it. The show portrayed that without sugar coating it. They didn't tried to make it look less gruesome and painful which most other shows do.. For me that is "glorifying" suicide not this. Scenes dealing with suicide, bullying, assualt, rape should make audience uncomfortable!! I know there are some people suffering from mental issues which can get triggered by some scenes shown on this show. I personally think they should not watch the show or watch it after somebody they know has watched it so that the person can tell them which episodes they should skip. I think scenes like this make the people realise that such acts are not for TV/Netflix!! These things happen in real life to real people!! P.s Sorry for the rant but it's true

The broom stick scene was way harder to watch than the suicide scene. Neither should happen, but they do and if they allow the rape scenes, they need to keep the suicide scenes because that was part of the story line. The warnings were there, so we knew what was coming and we continued to watch. People getting upset over certain topics really have no right to complain because they were warned. ALL of those scenes were tragic and triggering, but ALL were part of the story. They should not pick and choose what is worse to watch, it's all or nothing if they want it that way, but oh yeah, that takes away from part of the story. 🤷‍♀️

It was a big mistake to delete the suicide scene. It was as powerful even because it was like it was. In which world it romantise suicide? 13rw is known and loved for the honestly and brutal reality. Hannahs scene do happen exactly like this in real life too for some ppl. Its a fact and not romantic in any way. Deleting this scene was like cutting out part of 13rw soul. I tried suicide myself but this scene didn't trigger me, bc i accepted it as given, needed, reality. What use its to make such a series but starting censoring or lying? Some ppl here wrote, that some other scenes was more hard to watch, as for example the rape scenes. I completely can sign this. They was way harder, but they are still in, and its good so. I am glad I have still the original episode with this scene in.

Great show. I convinced my daughter to watch it. She's just out of school and works with training dogs for special needs people. I have to admit that my concerns about her peace of mind and bouts with depression worried me greatly. 13 RW was quite possibly a lifesaver for her. As a psychologist, I understand the producers' struggles around how to depict suicide in order not to romanticize it and risk to indirectly encourage it rather than discourage. In my opinion it was a good idea to change the way Hannah dies, from drug overdose to a more crude method, that took a lot of romanticization away indeed, but as for removing the most graphic scenes, I don't think that helped. Those deleted scenes could definitely strike or even traumatize viewers, but this has not much to do with encouraging or discouraging that action. If you want to end your life, not knowing exactly how to do it won't be enough to stop you from finding a way to do it. It would be hypocrisy to believe this. Encouraging people to seek help, the whole semicolon symbolism and the entire message of the series, that's what teenagers need in my opinion. Is the original suicide scene too crude for teenager viewers? Probably, and so are all the rape scenes... but I believe 13RW is a show for parents and teachers rather than for teens. Politically correct-ness has never saved a life. I am not from USA, and probably culture makes a difference, probably in Italy our collective subconscious is so full of graphic depictions of tortured saints on ancient frescoes, that blood, death and pain on screen has a different effect on us... but after all is said and done, they should probably have left the suicide scene uncensored and add a disclaimer encouraging teenagers to watch the show together with their parents, creating opportunities for emotional, open-hearted dialogue.

There's no dumber "peer pressure" producers faced than removal of Hannah's suicide "AS FILMED per script" 2 yrs post-production. Let's delete the entire series, wait, its the series in its original entirety (& ALL RAW REALITY) that creates its best, effective deterrent against suicide! If you remove the ugly reality of it, you open up curiosity & kids will explore slitting their wrists in real life, since the show was forced to remove those scenes. Are they blind how dangerous it is to remove the raw violence (intended to detur teen suicide in this manner. Why should anyone's voice ruin Hannah's suicide as 1st filmed!? This critical deterrent scene is for the rest of the world, to show them the pain & how bad it is! W/o this scene, suicide curiosity & attempts likely increase!
