I wanna believe he just wanted to be with his girlfriend, but he also wanted to equalize Westerburg. How he did it is all I have a problem with. A lot of people fantasize about having someone as passionate as JD as a lover, which is beautiful. If we take him at face value, he's a passionate guy with a great capacity to love, but he was extraordinarily selfish, manipulative, abusive, and cruel. I think he really was just trying desperately to be close to her and I don’t believe he really wanted to kill her (as we see with his reaction to her suicide) but when she rejected him, he felt he had no other choice, which, again, was obsessively selfish. If she came out of the closet, I think they could have spoken civilly for at least a few minutes, but with both their pride and ego in the world, it would have turned ugly (then deadly) very quickly. So, I don't think here he was being manipulative, just very, very desperate to spend time with her.

+Unicorn Films Yes, JD was obsessed, but I still feel he truly loved her. As seen in 'Our Love Is God', it begun with him wanting Veronica to feel safe and better. Seeing her in pain gave him pain. With this said, JD was also DEFINITELY mentally unstable. He loved her but he also obsessed over her and death. It was gradual, but present. In the duets between them, there is always a presence of both love and obsession. 'Our Love Is God' began with loving Veronica but seeing her in pain triggered his idea that literally any solution, including death, must be used to make her feel "better" (eliminating anyone who can't make her happy). In 'Seventeen' his obsession is subdued because Veronica gave him an ultimatum: her or killing. Well, obviously, he chose killing, but in the beginning it was all for her. Afterwards his own insanity manifested into killing because he felt it was right and not for Veronica. In 'I Am Damaged' he takes the bomb so Veronica could live. THAT was love in my opinion. Despite contrary reasons why he took it, I honestly believe he did it because he loved her. But in the end he realized that his obsession with killing overpowered his love for Veronica causing Veronica to no longer love him but fear him. So overall: JD loved Veronica, but he also loved and obsessed over death.

I feel as though the underdevelopment of the characters and their relationships are purposely skipped over in the film. The message of the film and message of the musical are both very different things. The film is about the media's over glorification of youth troubles and youth suicide, and good portion of the film's message can be summed up in these words from Veronica's mother. Veronica: "All we want is to be treated like human beings, not experimented on like guinea pigs or patronized like bunny rabbits!" Veronica's Dad: "I don't patronize bunny rabbits!" Veronica's Mom: "Treated like human beings? Is that what you said little Ms. Voice-of-a-generation? Just how do you think adults act around other adults? Do you think it's all just a game of double's tennis? When teenagers complain that they want to be treated like human beings, it's usually because they are being treated like human beings." I'm pretty sure the movies underdeveloped characters, relationships and "Who-gives-a-fuck" attitude are all important to the film's message. It's shown in the film that no one is actually effected emotionally after the death of H. Chandler. It is also shown that people pretend to care in order to look like a better person, and the media pretends to care in order to push some forced agenda on to the youth. The underdevelopment of everything falls into this message and the movie is basically saying "You don't know these people, you aren't friends with them, why should you care if they're abused, bullied or suicidal? Exactly you don't know them, so you don't care." The film clearly displays the idea that all these relationships and characters run deep, but since we only see it at surface level, we only see glimpses of these relationships details. This is absolutely genius and makes you certainly feel like an outsider who's just viewing people around them. Sort of what it's like to be in high school. There's weird-fuck kids, annoying kids, emo kids, stupid kids, asshole kids, beautiful kids, smart kids, etc. etc. etc......... And every single one has their own story, problems, feelings and all that jazz. But you only observe and see the very surface of it. On the surface you'll see two kids get into a fight and you won't know why, but the people around you will start rumors and make up stories in order to fill in the blanks of these kids feelings and behaviors. Sort of like watching the film and filling in the blanks between the relationships of Veronica and Betty, Betty and Heather D., Heather C. and Heather D. Heather M. and Heather C., etc, etc, etc......... Everyone in the story ha a strange dynamic that you only see on the surface. And I believe it is all fully intentional and I personally think it's absolutely genius and makes for a much more memorable and interesting viewing experience. I would analyze the hell out of the musical too, but this comment got really long so I'll just say that the musical has a different overall message than the film, and displays it in a different way by using it's characters backstories and surroundings in order to build upon, and it works very well in it's own right.

MinecraftLuvr007 If you want, I have been analyzing the movie for like 10 years so I don't have as much to say about the musical, but I can try. So the musical is much less cynical than the film, by a lot. The film is very dark in tone, as the musical is too but it's done in a bit less heavy of a way. This fits with the musicals overall message. The musical's message is perfectly illustrated in the last song "Seventeen (Reprise)". "Act like we're all still kids because this could be our final chance." The musical looks at high school in a much different light than the film. While the film has hinted optimism at the end, the musical has clear optimism, the idea that people can change and make the world better. I didn't touch upon it in my original comment because it was too long, but Westerburg itself is all one metaphor for society. The film looks at it in the way that all of society will eventually crumble because people of different social statuses are incompatible. The ending of the film with the whole "Now that you're dead, what are you going to do with your life" question that JD asks Veronica on the steps of the school before he blows himself up, symbolises Veronica's escape from her social status, as in "Veronica The Heather" is dead and she's a new Veronica, who goes and asks Martha if she wants to hang out on Friday, despite Heather D. telling her not to. The optimism is there but it's sort of muffled. The musical shines on this idea of Veronica becoming a new person and in a way trying to unite the statuses, or at least act as some sort of balance between them. The way the musical dissects the relationships between the characters helps make the optimistic ending clearer. Since you care about these people and understand them, the reuniting of Veronica and Martha and the end is more powerful. I could even go on about how her main color (which is blue) symbolises neutrality and order, but I'm exhausting myself here. Sorry I don't have as much to say about the musical, since I haven't had as much time to digest it, as I have had the film. For a good analysis on the social aspects of the film, I recommend the video "Heathers Review" by TheOtherSocio here on KZbin. He's a guy who looks at movies and explains the sociology behind them. Now that I have had time to think about it, the musical does contain the same message, it's simply more optimistic and expresses more.
