How To: Measure and Cut Jon Boat Casting Deck Hatches
Step by step demonstration video of how I measure and cut the hatches for my rear cadting deck in my jon boat. Im currently in the middle of my rear deck rebuild of my jon boat to bass boat, the #topgunjonboat , and decided I'd make a step by step video of how I address the hatch portion on the process. Very in depth, hopefully it can help as this is a commonly asked question i get. Ill show how I measure, account for carpet, space hatches, plywood orientation, explain the over all process. As well as show the end result. Enjoy
Note: I am using 11/32 plywood but typically recommend 1/2 inch for most builds because it is easier to work with.

Thanks a ton for all the hard work on these videos. They’ve been very inspiring and motivating for me. Just started my own build of a 14 foot v hull and will be using some of your techniques and processes. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Amazing job man. Both the work and explaining it in the video. If someone doesn’t follow how you’re doing things, they probably shouldn’t be building their own boat.

Hi. I've been building my boat using mostly your videos. They are a huge help. Thanks so much. I have a question... I cut my Center deck board (3/4" ply) and it sits flush to the boat bottom between the two boat benches. My cut is so tight to the benches (with carpet) that I have to press the floor in by standing on it. Will that cause me a problem in the winter when the aluminum contracts? I'm afraid the deck will buckle.

Great videos, Thanks for sharing. I'm doing an 18' crestliner fish hawk from top to bottom and front to back. The techniques you use are simple and practical and should last a very long time. It looks like you are using regular plywood and not marine grade, Is this correct? I'm going to use regular 19/32" BCX plywood (this is the size that it has now) on my build with the fiberglass resin and just wanted to get your opinion. Thanks again for all the videos it is very much appreciated!

You know the undeniable urge ya get no matter how hard you try to stop from sneezing or tearing up from cutting on an onion or yawning when the person next to you yawns??….🤦🏾‍♂️well Lord knows I tried to resist the urge but I just gotta do it!! Like a cat pawing a dangling ball of yarn or a bass with a shakyhead SXE Shad roboworm in front of its face….here comes the manchildishness…@ 12:28 ”That’s what she said”…I know-I know….couldn’t resist (but now bruh, c’mon who doesn’t love a decent gap? Wood and gaps go hand in hand…etc.🤷🏾‍♂️)🙄😏 Great Video Tutorial and Awesome Information as usual…. (…oh, yeh, no…now actually talkin about and complimenting your videos not my comments…lol!)👍🏾😉😜

Awesome video. Question, would you put the sides down before the floor just in case the floor has to be replaced?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats Жыл бұрын
No. My sides come out easy so floor can be pulled if necessary. If I'm understanding your question correctly without having to go back and watch my video

When cutting carpet for inside corners (i.e., the deck framing around hatches), do you do anything special for the inner edge of the corners themselves? Or, do you just count on the "fluff" of the carpet to fill the gap? I have seen your technique for outside corners, and how you finish them on the underside, but I don't think I've seen anything anywhere on how to best handle inside corners.
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 2 жыл бұрын
There's not much you can do besides make a perfect cut to the corner and fold under so the material is equal on both sides. Unlike a hatch corner, you have less material there. Ive touch up oainted the exposed wood insude corner with gray to help hide it. For this same scenario is all aluminum boat carpet jobs, i can a small swatch and contact cement it in place. On wooden parts, i typically leave it alone.

If anyone is going to use 24oz carpet the gap you want is 5/16’s (slightly more than a quarter inch).

Secret on squaring a 1/4”. Framing squares are exactly 1/4”. Makes a lot easier than using a tape for hinges
