Just the camera view of the plastic broadheads rotating toward their target was worth the time spent watching. That's the great part of being retired. Fascinating concept put to trial. Thanks for all the effort you spent putting this video together.

Long hair guy, don’t know his name, I apologize, slammed his trigger about 2 inches from the release. That’s going to cause erratic flight. I can understand the guys probably were a bit excited like shooting a big buck. For this concept ? You cannot argue against physics and science. That tan Bear bow I believe ? Blew thru that block target. Not sure how worn it is, but that’s penetration ! Sharpen em up and put one on that Elite bow @ 15-20 yards on a pig over a feeder !!! This is exciting stuff and possibly the future of broadheads and arrow building.

How would the gimballed broadhead be affected by a side wind/gust? I'd like to see you guys test the Ethics spinning inserts with fixed broadheads and see how that affects flight, impact, and penetration.
@DigtoDef
@DigtoDef 2 жыл бұрын
According to all the technical papers I've gone through, the broadhead should turn slightly into the side wind and reduce the overall lateral (cross-wind) movement of the arrow. That's what the theory says anyway! The purpose of these prototypes is to test situations such as wind, penetration performance, ease of use. Thanks for your question!
@stevenperue1528
@stevenperue1528 2 жыл бұрын
@@DigtoDef sorry I asked this question a few days ago but haven't gotten a response. well I did get 1 response but someone deleted the comment. But why can't the gimble be attached to the insert and not the broadhead?
@DigtoDef
@DigtoDef 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevenperue1528 The gimbal essentially takes the place of the center of gravity (cg). The center of pressure (cp) of the broadhead needs to be behind the pivot point for stability. If you put the gimbal in the insert, the cp will be ahead of the pivot point and the broadhead will immediately flop over to the maximum travel limit and wind plane severely. I talk a lot about stability factors in the previous THP video that came out just before this one.

A dumbed down version of this is basically take a pencil and poke it through a piece of paper.. the point is your broadheads point and the pencil is you're arrow.. and the paper is your blades. If this works the options are crazy. You can shot any blades you want. 2 3 4 single bevel Double bevel 1inch 2in.. I love the idea and I really hope it works out! This is not the same as a spinning insert.. on a spinning insert does the point spin with the arrow or with the broadheads?.. it's different ..

@@Tbowie13 I see it as high end physics and science compacting into archery. We might be looking @ a form of the future to arrow lethality. Arrow spine will become more critical so the arrow stiffens up straight faster to fly point first which then equals better penetration. It’s going to simply be synchronized arrow building, no different then we do today but with different triggers to obtain the same directness to arrow and point being synched. I like the concept and believe maybe after my days are over, this will become reality.

With his concept you would probably want extreme FOC because you can clearly see the shafts impacting on a bad angle even though the point is dead on track where he first aimed it. His concept would allow 20-30% FOC easily because the heavy wide heads and the short stiff shafts with no fletching. I imagine with current materials and his whirligig broadheads you might be able to push 35% FOC with a 300 grain head and 600 grain total weight.

The whole time I was wondering about the impact when the broadhead would get cocked sideways. I like the idea of the fixed point. I bet the gimbeled blade would allow one side to hit a bone then move away from the bone while the arrow continues to penetrate straight. Another idea I have had is that you guys need to come out with a large diamond bench stone with about a 5-10 degree angle in a ridge down the middle so your average dummy can get sharper 3 blade heads. Sharpening 3 blade heads on a flat stone gets a really coarse angle and really won't shave hair. If your average dummy had a slightly beveled stone and kept the point running down the peak of the bevel he could get a much sharper blade angle.

So, I’m confused … wouldn’t this still be a “mechanical“ head?
@YoureSoVane
@YoureSoVane 2 жыл бұрын
Debatable. The inclined plane is the simplest of machines and yet the fixed blade isn't "mechanical". If the community defines it around blade deployment or complexity of design, it cold go either way.

@@YoureSoVane good point. I would just consider any broadhead that has movable parts during flight or during deployment a “mechanical” head. Just because it take mechanics to operate for the flight or impact. However, it’s a matter of debate. I do like the concept and ingenuity in new designs .

Interesting concept. I'm shocked at how many commented that don't understand that the chisel point of the head does not move. It is only the blades that are free to move and spin about the shaft of the head. If anything this should keep the arrow tracking straighter in the animal as the blades can, to a degree, move around bone if the contact is at a shallow angle. RF and RM. This is a testing channel. Time to nut up and spend some cash on a proper slow-motion camera. I would love a test of mech, fixed, spinning insert, and the gamble head shot from an out of tune bow with slow-motion footage from 15 to 50 yards.....if ever an image was worth 1000 words. Your work is fantastic and pushing positive change in an industry, and with a population, that needs it.

Thanks! You nailed it - the nose is attached to the shaft via a rigid steel post - so it should fly as well as a field point and the shaft should hit in line too. The blades should just pivot around the bone as needed. We have a high speed camera, but so far it's been used for a lot of close in work - thanks for your constructive comments!

One thing I noted here is this guy seems to think that crossbow bolts will have a ton of energy at long distances but that's simply not the case as compared to a compound bow arrow. The shorter, lighter, crossbows bolts lose energey must faster than a compund bow arrow does at longer distances. Its a matter of physics.

you don't want to shoot larger broadheads unless hunting turkey. For deer, i think larger bh just means longer blood trail because its painful and problaby wont penetrete like a mechanical doesn't.

I’m pretty skeptical. Seems like an over complication… and don’t know how that gimbal on the front etc isn’t going to compromise structural integrity….
@DigtoDef
@DigtoDef 2 жыл бұрын
Well I did try to address that although getting it down to 100 grains and 3 single bevel blades and 1.25" cutting diameter was a challenge that meant going to an aluminum 7075 body. Right now the pivot ball is integrally machined into a steel post that links the nose with the insert. I believe that aspect is already structurally sound. The blades and the body just gimbal around the integral ball - so if they can survive impact we have full integrity. I hope that makes sense on the design. If we go to 200+ grains instead of 100 we could likely go to an integral body/blade system easily enough and then you have only three parts - nose, shaft, and body/blades unit. I think that's a good direction for this to go in the future. Thanks for your skepticism. It makes me try harder :)

How does the gimble affect penetration if the shaft isn’t inline with the broad head? It would have to negatively affect it.

I would imagine on lighter arrow boddies more then if your shooting a heavier shafted arrow. The weight of the arrow is part of what drives it threw a target.

I agree with what you're saying. Although the large 3D printed heads showcase how the broadhead works on video better than a smaller head would, like the ones they ended up manufacturing. Aarons arrows flew pretty well. Zach's on the other hand... I'm still choosing evolution 200g all day
