Wow it really make me wonder what on earth would ever make someone do such stupid and crazy things to any piece of machinery. I bet that fan was probably working just fine before they got into it lol. Glad to see you have got it back up and running again!

The only thing I can tell is they "rewired" part of it, using duct tape. The head wire was insulated with duct tape inside the motor, so they had disassembled it for that. The rotor was still a good solid press-fit on the shaft; so they must have used a press or very large vise to move it. One theory I have is that they felt the need to replace the shaft, and somehow obtained a shaft with no rotor, or "thought" the rotor was part of their problem and swapped it. Either way, I try not to think too much about it because you can't understand the actions of idiots. Even the idiot doesn't understand what they are doing; after all.

Those 16" Hunter fans are good units. I have a "CG-16" and a "CG-16 ½". Hunter seemed to use two different motors, a 0.7A and 0.5A, as my two fans have different currents. Both fans on high actually spin within a few RPM of each other. The main differences are that the 0.7A fan spins up very quickly, while the 0.5A takes longer. Additionally, there is hardly any difference between the 3 speeds on the 0.7A motor, while the 0.5A motor has 3 very distinct speeds.

About 15 years ago someone was taking a piss in the separate toilet at mums place. The exhaust fan was running when all of a sudden the fan blades with the shaft fell straight down and hit the floor; on this particular occasion the rotor stayed in the fan motor and the shaft + blades fell out. Never seen it happen before or since

They are good fans unless something happens to them. The blades are delicate, as with most of these vintage fans. Hope you are able to get your straightened out easily.

Perhaps the previous owner decided the worm gear end of the shaft was what the fan blades were supposed to hold on to. For the worm gear side to stick far enough from the front of the motor, the rotor had to be moved back as far as possible. The chisel marks could be from the blade's set screw. At any rate, I guess we've got to admire some people's motivation to make things work.

you don't suppose it was dropped? I have seen that exact amount of movement from shipping mishaps..
@davida1hiwaaynet
@davida1hiwaaynet 2 жыл бұрын
There is always that chance. If a drop did move the rotor along the shaft like that, it would have had to have been with another blade and cage. There would be no way the blade and cage were in the condition they are in after that. Also this is a pot-metal casing fan so I would expect more damage to the housing and neck area. The press fit was still very good, as well, so it would have had to be a very hard drop! It's possible that another similar fan was dropped and destroyed, leaving the rotor in the wrong position; and then the Mechanical Moron transferred the shaft with the off-position rotor to this motor for some reason. I just don't know.

tbh i just fucked up a radiator fan motor like that. The fan blade was so hopelessly stuck on the end of the shaft that I used an air hammer to knock the shaft through it. While I took every precaution, the shock pushed the motor shaft through the armature winding as well. But the commutator didn't move, so it kind of crushed the ends of the windings. Good thing those motors are only like $30 and easily replaced lol.
@davida1hiwaaynet
@davida1hiwaaynet 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah. I can imagine. DC motor armatures are a lot more delicate! I recently had a vintage radiator fan motor from 1987 need service. The blade has a steel hub cast into the plastic blade. I had to cut some grooves into the sides of the hub to attach a gear puller.
