This is literally gold! I got my straddle press before I've seen this video and I had to learn all of this the hard way... This really nails down everything there is to know! I think one of the trickiest part for me was to pass from shoulder leaning forward in the bottom to shoulders stacked on the hands when you reach the straddle handstand

Question: Which specific muscles are used in the back during the press ? So, which muscles are responsible for not falling over when leaning forward?
@Matthewismith
@Matthewismith 5 жыл бұрын
Specifically in the back? In that case, namely the upper fibres of the trapezius and both rhomboids major and minor (predominantly scap elevation). There's a surprising amount of anterior involved too from upper pec major to coracobrachialis, so not just the back (mainly in regards to shoulder flexion).

Training the press depends on your individual weak link (I have no idea what's limiting you). I cover how to approach training for the press in detail in the Handstand Toolkit (link in description).

Great explanation with biomechanics! If one isnt using Simon's technique can it techincally be called a "press" ? Press where one is pressing from the shoulders and lifting/coming down as opposed to the easier techinique of mostly balancing using hip flexors to tuck the legs close? Simon indeed needs to counter extra torque but it isnt as shown in torque illustration, I believe. Downward Torque is acting on simon from his center of mass which is in line with the hands in the torso ( but not in his scapula) to the distance of the end of simons feet. To maintain his balance he leans forward but also generate a counter upward torque with distance from center of mass to his head. Please correct me if i am wrong Matthew. Thanks
@Matthewismith
@Matthewismith 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think you're misunderstanding slightly here. It's a simplified diagram for sure as the counter torque of his head etc is minor and can be subtracted from the legs (but doesn't really change it much). Which way do you think he is falling? Clearly towards the side of the legs. He's not suddenly going to flip over when in the planche position. The sum of the torque is on one side. That is the direction he is fighting. The same applies to the closer in straddle press. In this case it is more subtle with the upper back over, but again, super marginal and the sum is on one side. It is definitely a press using the same mechanics just different leverages. They both use a similar motor recruitment pattern, just with very different levels of difficulty. They are both pressing.

How do you reduce arching in handstand if you have the shoulder mobility
@Matthewismith
@Matthewismith Жыл бұрын
If you have the shoulder mobility it's likely 1 or a combination of: 1. Lacking the strength at end range. You might have the passive flexibility but maybe lack the active strength to use it and hold the position. 2. Coordination -> a straight line can be a surprisingly technical position to learn. Sometimes it needs different cues to get there. To further point 2, I recommend getting at least a 40s handstand (preferably longer) before worrying about getting the 'perfect' line. As long as it's not super bendy, a slight banana shape is fine (from a functional point of view).
