To me this is the best tutorial to learn the press to handstand, it's been a year since I have begun calisthenic, and I have applied nearly all the advice hear (without seeing this video my experimentation just lead me to trying a lot of what Sondre present here) the only "criticism" I can make is to maybe focus on the tuck press to handstand as it allows you to attempt the move quicker as not nearly as much flexibility as the other version (not saying working on flexibility is bad I think quit the opposite but being able to attempt the move as quick as possible seems important to me) I would also advise training the bent arm press to handstand (frogstand to handstand is an achievable goal it was my first press to handstand ever) as it allows you to work on the same type of pattern but including a strong strength element to it. I have unlocked the tuck press to handstand a month ago and I have just unlock, L-sit to handstand yesterday, and today I have unlocked the pike press to handstand and the tuck planche to handstand so being consistent and patient does pay off sometimes you can unlock a lot of skills very quickly and the different presses are good example of this. Hope this can maybe complement this already excellent video
whaaa really cool your tutorial video. Complete and good detailled. I'm french and I was happy and surprised to understand all things you explained. I'm novice with the Handstand. I'm training with frog to h., L-sit to H., and simply Handstand/press to H (a sort of). And I'm more motivate now to train to do the Press to Handstand (and to continue with the Tuck planche and Lean planche). Thanks a lot :)

This video is great! I've only been training my handstands more consistently for 2 months (before that I'd only do it like once a week at most vs now several times a week) and I'm at a point where I am more consistently getting 10s holds when pulling off the wall, but still struggle with finding that balance point when kicking up into the handstand. I know I still have balance to improve on, but I at least want to start working on the strength for the press as my shoulder strength is definitely lagging behind everything else. I have decent flexibility so I'm not too worried about that. Anyways, I think I will look up drills/exercises for the planche tuck and build up shoulder strength & do some of the active hip flexor things you showed, while still working on just the balance part of my handstand. That way, in a few months hopefully I'll be able to bring them all together for a press!
@jin394 Жыл бұрын
Also, I know so many ppl suggest not to work on the press at all until you can hold a better handstand and while I don't disagree, I still think I can work on the required strength for it alongside the balance so I appreciate you giving drills and strength exercises that aren't only geared to the press but a beginner who eventually wants the press can do as well.

Dude, amazing scenery for these videos. I live in Norway as well, but it seems like Bergen is a place with much worse weather (and temperature for what I know) than where you are, haha. Btw, that straddle planche press you did there was insane! I can't imagine being able to do that, but maybe one day. I agree that planche work helps with press to handstands because both are shoulder flexion, right? I'm going to continue on my pseudo planche push ups and planche leans and see if I can get a press in a couple months without much direct work (knowing that I will do a lot of pike/pancake and L-sit work as well). Great video. Cheers.

I am going to visit Bergen for a few days in the beginning of November, do you have any recommendations on places that I should definitely check out? Also, do you know a cool spot in Bergen where I can do some calisthenics (a scenery similar to this video would be awesome!). I'm from the Netherlands so I should feel right at home with the bad weather :)
@gustavwenhelseth76813 жыл бұрын
Well, some places you could visit are Fløyen and Ulrikken (mountains). Fløyen has attractions and a calisthenics park on top. You can take a gondola sort of thing up there, or you can walk. There are a few museums there like the one for natures history (different animals and plants etc) and a fishing museum. Other than that, check it out yourself. The web has a lot of stuff. Hope you have a good stay.

what order of calisthenics achievements (muscle ups, front lever, back lever, planche, handstand, and human flag) should we go for; going from easiest to hardest.
@Sondre_Berg3 жыл бұрын
It’s very individual which of these are hardest, but I would definitely say handstand 1st mostly due to it’s carryover and applicability to other skills. Back lever is the easiest of the levers, muscle-up is a cool and attainable skill. Human flag is the least useful, but very cool and also easy to injure yourself, so I actually recommend waiting a bit before perusing it. Front lever can be started early on is provides a great back and core workout. Training toward the planche is also super relevant and the carryover to other skills are huge. To sum things up, I would personally recommend focusing on handstands for skill training and to develop strong shoulders and great body awareness. I would train planche strength and front lever strength, and include back lever as every now and then for skill training as the planche strength will have carryover to this. I would also train for the muscle up by building strong and explosive pull-ups and strong dips and include some specific technique training on the side. This will allready provide a complete workout with push and pull strength, both bent and straight arm. And also it would include some technical training to achieve some cool skills. Human flag I would recommend to wait until you at least have very stable handstand (in terms of strength), at least solid tuck planche and dragon flags.
What are your thoughts on l sit for the hip flexor hamstring flexibility core compression aspect of it. Besides being primary medium degree of shoulder flexion strength

Is this still beneficial when you do this against the wall? Bcause i cant stand away from the wall not yet..
@barjutsu73412 жыл бұрын
I hope I can get an answer with this. when doing handstand is better to your hands to tilt it like 45 degrees or better to put face it on front.
@Sondre_Berg2 жыл бұрын
Front 100%. A 45 degree angle is much more difficult, but may be useful in moves such as press to HS, planche and other skills that requires a steep wrist angle
@solyommirza Жыл бұрын
Hey! Nice video, helps a lot. I’m learning it also, and noticed that normal palms forward position attack the wrist dangerously while leaning forward at the beginning of the press. Do you think that about a 45 degree turn out of the palms (like at the planche) would help in a good way?
