Okay, Jim, I just received my carbon fiber version of the SOS and damn! It is an impressive knife! Fit and finish is impeccable. The blade is a work of art. I actually like the flipper tab. The action is excellent. The timascus clip not only looks great, but it goes in and out of my pocket very nicely. I do have to say that the one negative has to do with where the carbon fiber and titanium meet at the spine, you can clearly see that it's 2 separate pieces. That being said, I really like the look of the carbon fiber and am glad that I got it. Thank you for influencing me to get this knife. Mechforce nailed this knife.

Well this was an instant buy for me as soon as I knew about the collaboration, Tashi is my favorite designer, and the custom version of SOS is among my favorites of his designs. So I had no doubt I would be getting this. I went with the CF, I like the look of the materials being split right down the middle on these clamshell construction models, but I will likely pick up the full Ti as well. All that said, I was expecting to like it, probably a lot, but it still exceeded all expectation. I've had several Tashi collaborations, I have the Krypton, as well as others from Reate, I've also had one from Thorburn and Van Heerden. I was expecting it to feel like a Reate collab, it doesn't, it's something different. One thing that really stood out was the finishing work, there are no sharp corners or edges anywhere at all, you can't find them, even though there are plenty of defined corners and transitions, all of them are smooth. That's not something you can say about even a lot of other relatively high end production knives. The action is perfect to the point where I don't even think about it, there's no need for any finessin trying to push the tab in a certain way or with a certain force, it just fires the same every time, and falls shut smoothly. Yeah, perfect is the best description, it's perfectly executed. I originally knew of Mechforce due to their titanium flashlights, but now they're definitely on my radar for future production collaborations. We can agree again on this being my favorite knife I've bought this year, and I've bought a lot of Microtechs and some really knife CKF stuff this year as well.

I told myself I wasn't going to buy any more knives. Well, I couldn't help myself, and I snagged this one this week. I'm here to tell you that everything Jim says in this video is spot on. This knife is an amazing intersection of design and quality production. This is my fourth Tashi knife (the others are a couple Star Boys and a Baby Machine) and if it came even CLOSE to those knives I would have been happy. The S.O.S. far exceeded my expectations- and that is saying something!

She's a beaut, Clark! And acutally a recurve I could get behind. I love Tashi's design language, but I'm puzzled as to why he feels the need to include a big hole that the lanyard guys can tie their tampons to.

Depends on who you are. I’ve already carried it, and plan to often. I carry and use significantly more expensive customs on a regular basis. But you don’t have to do anything in particular with any knives you buy, carry them or stick them in a glass case under a single light to stare at like a piece of art or treasure. As long as you enjoy it, who cares?

Nothing about it makes it any less usable than any other knife you'd EDC. Your applying your own values to it, but that's not a trait of the knife itself.

No sharpening choil already is sporting a smile. Probably a deal breaker for me.😢
@JimSkeltonKnives
@JimSkeltonKnives 10 ай бұрын
If you have someone who’s competent at sharpening, it won’t be an issue. Also, it’s gonna take a while before it’ll need actual sharpening unless you’re really a seriously dedicated user. M390 holds an edge for a good amount of time. And stropping is key for all knives. I never go straight to removing material and reducing a blade’s lifespan, I strop many times before I sharpen.
@matthewcullen7106
@matthewcullen7106 9 ай бұрын
A "smile" in sharpening refers to when the edge bevel runs into the much wider area of material at the edge of the plunge grind, sharpening that thicker area is what causes a wider edge bevel and creates the smile effect. There are plently of examples of this with production knives, this isn't one of them. The edge on this knife stops several milimeters before the plunge grind starts. I have it myself, if you look at edge straight on you can see that the blade is the same thickness behind where the edge stops. So no, it isn't "already sporting a smile", nor will it unless you choose to extend the edge back to the base of the plunge yourself. This is also a characteristic of Tashi customs, the idea being that the knife will never get hung up on material when sliding out of it. I'm actually glad this collaboration was true to his original design, unlike the Massdrop Heat Seeker which catered to people who complained about the lack of choil.
@dionflorio9249
@dionflorio9249 9 ай бұрын
@JimSkeltonKnives I still prefer a sharpening choil it looks nicer. If you had a small sharpening choil on this knife it would look more finished that's just my opinion. I have many Spydercos and I get it but this for me is a more dressy knife.
