I kind of look at this game through rose tinted glasses. The first game I ever played was a Mechwarrior game while sitting on my dad's lap and "helping". Honestly, that nostalgia alone is enough for me to overlook a lot of the issues that the game has. There are some small tweaks that need to be done, but on the whole they took the concept of Battletech and the gameplay from MWO and put them together beautifully, solving many of the issues present in Battletech, such as poor pay, ludicrously expensive and difficult to assemble mechs, and how reputation works. All in all, I like the game. A lot. But I also acknowledge my own bias toward the series, so keep that in mind.

I played Mechwarrior at Microsoft's store in the Metreon back in the 90s. It wasn't VR, but they had build a cockpit with full controls inside it, and they had multiple monitors set up for a full wrap-around display. So far that's the most imersive version of mech combat I've ver seen, and it was literally decades ago, kinda sad nobody seems to have improved on a one time proof of concept set up in a single store with something that had so much potential.

I don't think so. This is a long running series with long running fans. Sadly, from my perspective, they are trying to go more mainstream with it, and looses some of the MechWarrior soul. It's more and more MechAssault, and less and less MechWarrior. Everyone just holding W firing at enemies until they die or win, complaining about everything making the devs tune the game for this kind of game play, rather than saying to people they should ease off on the W and make use of the combined abilities of the team and so on. Problem is, going mainstream is going more MechAssault, more Armored Core, with cool mechs, explosions, and all that stuff. Perhaps they pull a few new players, but for me as a fan, for the first time I'm not eager to by a MechWarrior game.

@@gustavogallo1694 30 storey tall, 5000 ton robots spinning round, doing ballet in mid air with zero regard for physics? Nonsense like that: is why Japanese games don't do well outside of Japan. Mechs are a fairly stupid concept, as you can't possibly hide anything that tall on the battlefield, meaning any mech would realistically be the first thing to die: but at least in Mechwarrior they're somewhat grounded. I bought Zone of the Enders way back in 2002: couldn't take it back to the store quickly enough. It's just beyond spastic, especially when said robot began swishing around a 500 ton sword so fast, there's basically no animation for it.

Like what it would look like if it came out today, but void of any greed mechanics or flashy colors, and just presented itself to be a game, as they have always been.

MW 2,3,4 were better games IMO. Less of a arcade shooter and more of Battlemech simulator. I still have been enjoying MW5. Not going to lie, its fun but really wish it had more features. More control over mech systems. BETTER AI. Mission preview (eg. Map overlays prior to drop. Figure out strategy to objective, mark waypoints, intel brief etc...really go for that immersion.) Player driven story. (Yeah it will take time and dev cost but the campaign story falls flat.) Also more and better immersion and fix continuity errors. (You have a company of mechs. 12 so why is the PC flying around in a Lepord class dropship and not a Union class?) Just little things like that could go along way to making a better game. On the plus side my kid has been enjoying it and decided to pick up the TT version and introduce him to Battletech OG.

I've been playing MW since the mid 90s on PC. Those early games were immensely detailed in weapons, armor, and heat management. And talk about 'open world'. I once got lost for an hour trying to find a buddy I was battling over dial-up modem. As new entries of the series came along, that detail was greatly simplified in favor of mechanics and configuration that would appeal to a wider audience I speculate. I still contuned to play further iterations in the MW world, but none really ever matched up to those first developed for the PC. With this newest take, I won't mind so much the lack of detail in the battle environment as long as that detail is in sacrifice for game performance and mech build out refinement.

Obviously been a long time since this came out I picked this up today off steam for £29 for the special edition ((game with dlc etc etc)) and It’s my first game from the series although I’ve always been a mech game fan and this just hits the spot works seamlessly with both keyboard and hotas rig, it’s just such a satisfying game to play in every aspect and some of the larger battles can feel like epic conflicts of titans it’s awesome I’d recommend even years after its initial release.

Well it's about time... I did a pre order for this back in April. First, I've pretty much played them all. I still have both mw3 and mw4 on my modem day laptop. When fasa first released the table top my friends and I ate up everything we could lay our hands on. So I'm very interested in seeing where this new version will lead. I'm still in the process of downloading the game...(its 20gb and I only have access to really slow wifi) I really hope that the community will jump behind this and push it to greatness. First reviews look promising. We will have to get a modding player base started and see if the game can get a huge texture pack upgrade. It would be awesome if this got to skyrim levels of modding.

@Zippydsm Lee Yeah, I patched it for widescreen and all of the HUDs were way off. The framerate was fine, no threading or other graphical artifacts but it also wouldn't take my key configs. I like to use left hand for mouse eticle and NUM pad for movement and targeting. Oh well... ☹ Thanks anyway!

55hrs in so far and im loving it! graphics are a bit chopy at times but that may just be my graphics card. (radeon 7970) the story is typical for the mechwarrior franchise. the wide varriety of mechs is fun. you may not be able to customize the mechs as much in some of the other games but i think thats a good thing because it keeps the chassis' more in line with their cannon counterparts. for anyone who likes stomping around in a giant robot id recommend getting it. 8.5/10

As a long-time FASA fan, going back to the early 90s, I must admit I'm not enamored of the idea of being able to easily customise your mech (not robot) and having fully functional equipment. The whole point of the series, games, novels, universe, was that technology was barely understood owing to constant warfare, parts were scrounged from one wrecked mech for another, and that until the Clans came along, there really weren't a significant number of new designs or upgraded technology. The struggle to build something from barely understood technology, scrounging anything and everything to build a functional mech, banding together with people to make a unit - those were things that made for a great game.

SKay I’m playing through it now. Customization is much more limited than MWO. Essentially the slots the come with the mech are the slots you have to play with. It limits variation so you can put a better quality weapon but that’s about it really. That said it feels very Arcady at times

Mechwarrior 2 was one of my first video games as a kid. MW2: Mercs is one of my all time favorite games, although it sadly didn't age well. I'd say this a respectable Mechwarrior game. They got the bread and butter of the series right. That's what counts--I'd say it's a true sequel. The only complaint I have is that the writing is flat and the voice acting mostly sucks. But to be fair, I guess that's ALSO in line with the mechwarrior franchise as well, so I'll let it slide.

The texture quality seems to be linked to the resolution. I was playing this on a 1080P monitor and everything look like mud, but it loaded quickly. I upgraded to a 5K ultrawide and now it takes about twice as long to load but everything is crystal clear. I think there are two separate texture packs that the game loads. One for sub 4K and 4K+ textures.

Anyone remember jumping in the locust and using it to run right up to a battle master and shoot it's legs off in the very first one, because it was so fast and short the BM couldn't hit it on the run and couldn't target it? I played that whole game in a locust :)

The ai is a problem, also the very first mech warrior gave you more control on ordering your own mech pilots what to do. You cant set up an ambush with the options they give you.

Use to get with buddies and have big on line battles in the early 2000, I bought and still have a ThrustMaster Joystick with throttle control, Torso mover, Multiple Fire buttons with a Center button that has a Flip cover on it that I use to set up as the FIRE ALL button! This looks great!! We need more games where people are "Even" in playing and can't do fancy moves.

It going to be hard to let go of my final mechwarrior 4 collectiion bundle (The version that Microsoft Games made). As many of you I been doing mechwarrior since the 90's (remember the days of having to reduce the distance and graphics so the screen can redraw faster). I am a completionist so I had to by the whole MW5 with DLC's. IGN gave it an 8.0 so I figure it was worth a shot. I am tired of pulling out the the old windows 7 to play the MW4 but it was a great experience. I hope MW5 lives up to the name.

I liked Lone Wolf because you could jack other mechs from your default power armor on those missions but there were missions where you started with a preset mech. Been putting off getting this, might grab it.

I really hope they keep with the times and realize a lot of the older mech players migrated from PC to console an bring the mech warrior franchise over into the xbox and playstation world. Would buy it in a heartbeat then!

The first Mechwarrior game I played was Mechwarrior 2 for the PS1 when I was in preschool. Since then I’ve played all the titles; my favorite by far was Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries. I used to spend hours in the arena missions to earn credits and try out new mechs. I still remember decking out a Nova assault mech with PPC’s and one shotting light mechs. So long as I get to blow up shit I’ll be happy and nostalgic. I never fully understood the complexity of the customization, I simply enjoyed blowing things up in a giant mech; but now that I’m older I can appreciate the customization options to a higher regard. That is, once I save enough to buy a gaming PC

It is similar of course, but it runs on a different engine and is more tuned to single player; the mechs feel heavier and more stompy, and weapons have more kick.

I actually think MWO was better just from a control and balance stand point (LOL clans OP plz nerf). In this game Light Mechs are essentially useless (whereas in MWO they can carry the entire battle). I don't think this game really improves on any of MWO beyond removing microtransactions and adding a lame procedural generated campaign (by that I mean, all the missions are generated but were pre-screened by the developer, as such the game is repetitive and really quite lame).

@@mrcyberpunk The improvement is that it's PvE so casual gamers aren't matched against people who apparently have all the time in the world to play and get super good at the game. I hated that about MWO. Some of us have to work for a living and have families, etc.

yeah the early game is meh. but once you get a big heavy mech and some high tier weapons you don't care about the main story except for the payout of those missions and hiring and buying new mechs. I love the feel of this game. "im a long time mechwarrior fan" it could have been better for sure but I think its good for what it is.

Interesting to hear you guys like it. One of my friends is a long time MechWarrior fan and he HATES this game. He thinks it's garbage that isn't worth your time, which was sad to hear. I was hoping it would be good and rope me back into the series.

I've been a Mechwarror fan since the mid 1980's when FASA started it. I even have ALL the RPG books, etc. I would rather die than part with them. I even had a subscription to the monthly magazine Mechwarrior and still have many of the issues! Yeah. Beat THAT!! lol I would LOVE to play this game!! Oh man!

you wouldn't its worse than predacessors and mwo. It's not a sim, it's AI is horrible, it's maps are terrible and enemies spawn out of thin air 300m out of the objective. There's no radar system and player actions don't affect salvage or biomes don't affect heat, it memory leaks like crazy, loading times take MINUTES, key rebinds don't work and mission scripting prevents anything but rushing at objectives otherwise you soft lock the game. MW5 team did not care, at all, about the game. It's completely broken and halfassed. Do. Not. Give. Them. Money. Pirate it and see how bad it is.

@@Haddedam You forgot to mention that the most memorable part of any mechwarrior game - the customization - is incredibly dumbed down and nearly pointless in this title. I backed the game's kickstarter and now I wish I'd kept my money because it's a joke compared to 2, 3, and even 4 (which was pretty arcade-like already).

mechwarrior was my all time favourite games back in the day and I would say that even today those old games gave me more joy that most of the hundreds or games I have played since. when I heard they were making a new one I was overjoyed but then the fans erupted to the news in a very negative way (rightly so, based on the dev's previous efforts) I am really hoping that this game can give me even a little of the joy I received way back when, if so I will be happy

I've played every single Mechwarrior title, and honestly, in a year when it's on Steam, I look forward to the game it could become. I figure it'll be out of beta by then. As for now, watching playthroughs... It's barely okay. It very much reminds me of Mass Effect Andromeda before the vomit of patches.

"Battletech fan" channel has instructions to play Mechwarrior 2 on win10. See description, what you need it there. Earthsiege 2 was made by the company that made Mechwarrior 1. But then FASA moved to Activision, so the makers of Mechwarrior 1 wanted a slice of the cake and made Earthsiege, Earthsiege 2 and Starsiege. If you want to play Starsiege, google "starsiege men in black". Also google "nglide" which is a 3DFX emulator you will need. You will have fun playing Starsiege in modern hardware. However, despite the aged graphics, the gameplay and overall feeling of Mechwarrior 2 still are unbeatable.

The dec cycle messed up the beta time and they could have fixed so many more bugs had they kept to their word on the beta tbh. But I've played nearly every mechwarrior and battletech videogames there has been and I can easily say this is one of the best so far

The game did still need alot of testing and they have seemed to fix some bugs from the beta demo but still doesn't change what I said about it haha

It's not bad. I've been playing these games since MW2 and used to do competitive MW3 and MW4. MWO was alright until thy started making... interesting balance decisions. Thus far MW5 is a lot of fun. Piloting feels right to me. You feel in control but definitely are aware of the mass of the machine at all time. This isn't MW4's borderline skating mechs or MW2's ponderous beasts. My biggest beef right now is with targeting. Enemies can only be locked on when you or a friendly have LOS on them meaning that most of the time you jut get surprised by enemies appearing more or less out of nowhere. It doesn't help that the game will spawn enemies randomly as well so you're never sure if you just didn't see that one or if the game put it there to mess with you. You learn quickly to advance on an objective cautiously to trigger the defenders to spawn and then reposition to fight them rather than just going in. There's definitely a steep learning curve - especially for people without experience. This game doesn't really pull its punches and will knock you in the teeth if you go in guns blazing ala CoD. It's really easy to get a pyrrhic victory where you finish a mission but basically get nothing for it. I'd suggest giving the game a try if you're new to the franchise but be prepared to have a rough time at the start.

At least if you want the giant battle mode and have a decent PC you can play the standalone Crysis mod Mechwarrior Living Legends. MW5 is a wave attack game. MWO is 12v12 pvp.
