I am 25 years old, married with two children and recently...I've had a strong desire, a will, an inner call... begging, SCREAMING to be an emergency medicine doctor! I had a rough upbringing. "Rough" is lightly putting it. Long story short: I was never a good student because I never had anyone at home to help or even care about my homework, grades, attendance, etc. -high school dropout.- Fast forward to present day. Graves' disease, heart failure, total thyroidectomy, marriage, kids, financial burdens, and a plethora of other issues, made me "grow up"and mature. At age 23 I realized the importance of an education and a degree. I'm studying radiography at my local community college. My cumulative gpa is 3.81. I am the student always up front, taking notes and participating in class. I truly have acquired a love of learning. It's amazing to experience this "happiness" in learning. BUT... my inner me reeeeeallyyyyyyy wants to go into medicine. Specifically emergency medicine. I can't bring myself up to it because I am afraid to miss out in my children's lives. School plays, Halloween parades, class parties, pta/ class mom meetings. The soccer games and dance classes. I never experienced that as a child. I was the kid in school plays- searching to see my mom or dad in the audience... but knowing deep down inside- they would never be there. A bit sad I know, but you can see why I am so involved with my kids. I am there for every milestone, every school event , I am always there on time, everyday to pick them from school dismissal. THAT is what holds me up from pursuing my dream career. I am afraid of missing out on precious moments. That is why I choose not to pursue medicine. The studying, stress, residency, and years of education doesn't bother me at all. It's the fear of missing out in my children's lives that does. I am probably making this bigger issue than it its... and all this may sound a bit depressing lol. I live vicariously through your videos. I imagine myself in med school. I watch your videos and several other KZbin videos, follow Facebook pages, blogs, you name it, all about emergency medicine, med school and surgeries. Your channel gives my inner "doctor me" life. Thank you. I'm cheering you on girl. I'm wishing ya the best :)

Currently still undergrad , from Texas the way bottom of it to be exact lol . I'm very certain in going into the medical field , I at times take a moment and step back and think if I were to not be studying biology what els I would want to pursue and nothing interests me more than bio. I'm wanting to be an ophthalmologist but I also know once I would get into med school I would be exposed to so many other interesting body parts and all . I love how you state in the video about you and your other classmates/friends wanting to be In control all the time because that's certainly me ! Lol love your videos !! Much love ❤️

They've sort of been my way of seeing that there's still hope for fun things in rotations after the first two years of mostly class work. I'm also long distance with my fiancee, so I know it's pretty tough to be separated from your significant other temporarily. It'll pass, and you'll be together soon where ever you match this year (how exciting!!).

I'll definitely try to. First semester flew by for me lol. Usually we try to see each other for a four day weekend after every block exam (4 to 6 weeks), alternating who visits who. It works out just fine, but it's an adjustment since we lived together for nearly a year before I started school. We Facetime every day, so that really helps.

So now I am playing catch up with my classes and trying to figure out what experience I need or what I need for my resume. My dream med school is University of Alabama at Birmingham and I may be transferring for my senior year in the fall if I can get money. That's basically where I'm at now, just excited to work to be a missionary doctor. :) Thank you so much for your videos and your care to help us pre-med/med students on this crazy journey!

Hi Jenny! I really love your videos! Here in Brazil, we don't need a undergrad to get into medical school, we do a college entrance exam after highschool and then if we pass we can get in. The problem is: it's really really hard. Medicine course demands the highest grades ever, and being a doctor in Brazil is praised profession and every parent dreams of their child being a doctor so it's very competitive. Anyways, I didn't get in and I'm going to try again this year! So 12 hours + classes of studying for the exam in 2017!!! I'm scared but I'm also really excited to go into this journey. Wishing you all the best with your interviews and your future jobs! x

Thanks Jenny your video is so informative. I'm so glad that I came across your channel couple months ago and since then you have become one of my role models. I just found so many things that we have in common. I'm Viet. I love makeup. I'm currently a pre-med at UMN. I want to go back to Vietnam at some point in my undergrad years to volunteer; etc. (also my forehead looks almost like yours haha). I'm about to start my second semester in college and at this point I'm pretty sure that I want to go to medical school. One thing that I worry the most is communication. English is not my first language. Sometimes I found it is really hard to get into deep conversations or discussions with other people. Can you please give me some advices on this? Also, do you know any doctors or any friends who are in med school that English is not their first language? Thanks
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
English was not my first language either (I remember taking ESL in elementary school). And there are plenty of people who pick up english even later in life and that are in medical school. Many people may not know this about me, but I use to have the worst fear about public speaking. I would start sweating, my voice would tremble - just know that you are constantly growing and improving. You may think your english is not good now but one day it will be. Just keep practicing and one day you will get there. Reading a lot also helped develop my english and my vocabulary.

I'm a first year med student in Switzerland, I've been following your channel for a few months, I love it !!! The system in Europe is a bit different from the US I think : in Switzerland and France for example, pretty much anyone can get into first year of med school, but you can only get into second year if you pass the final exam. Wich is REALLY tough. In my university only the150 students who got the best results will get to pass in second year . And we are almost 700... So I'm not doing much besides studying... and watching your videos ! :D

What is your take on international medical students & their path to securing US residencies? Specifically those who attend Caribbean schools/international programs with year 3 and 4 rotations in the US. Thank you for your wonderful videos thus far Jenny!! I am glad to have gotten to know you more through this chit chat video as well :) Looking forward to more of these!
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
I think it is doable, it will just be much much harder for internal students. Especially since class size in medical schools of the US are increasing while residency spots are not. I have a friend who is in FM residency and he told me that they had to apply to 100 residencies! As compared to medical students in the US would only apply to on average 20-40 and interview at 8-12. I also heard that it is a lot harder to pursue other specialties outside of primary care - like surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, etc.

Hello!! I'm a high school student in Michigan. I've known I've wanted to be a doctor forever and I love medicine and helping people. I didn’t really realize how much I enjoyed helping others until I joined Ski Patrol as a jr. first responder when I was 12. I didn’t expect much out of it, I just liked skiing and my hill needed a little extra help. There I helped people who had gotten injured on the slopes. I gave people casts, took pulses, put on neck braces and basically stabilized people until EMS arrived. Unexpectedly and all at once, I fell head-over-heals in love with medicine. I dreamed of wearing scrubs and being board certified and someday working in a field combining my two favorite things: medicine and helping people. It makes my eyes sparkle and my heart happy and I can't imagine doing anything else. I've shadowed lots of specialties and I'm so excited to go to college!! Sorry this was so long haha. You're an inspiration to me and you're so kind and amazing. I loved this video and loved getting to know you better!! Good luck on matching! I'm sure it'll go great :)

Hi Jenny! Love your videos! I currently just graduated college and right now taking a gap year before applying to med school. I watched all your previous videos about advice, however I was wondering if you had advice for those who don't have that much research experience on what you can do to make your application better? Currently I'm studying for the MCAT and just trying to get more shadow/volunteering hours. I was a research assistant for 2 labs but was only there for a semester for each lab. Thank you if you read this!
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
itschanellee Don't worry too much if you don't have strong research already. Your application seems strong is other aspects. Just study smart and do well on the MCAT - that will take you further than having some research. Remember that medical school looks at your application a whole. They know that not everyone is perfect. You can excel in some areas where others do not. Good Luck!!

I really enjoy your videos because I wasn't really sure about want I wanted to do. Having this insight into what medical school is really like has been so helpful. 😊 I was wondering if you had any tips for me in high school if I want to pursue medicine, later on in life? Thank you❤

Thats awesome! I would suggest shadowing a physician so you see first hand one aspect of the medical field.

Hi :) I'm last year med student from Europe, and I wanted to ask if your away rotations or externships extra to your curriculum have to be usually in University hospital? I would love to apply for residency in the US, and thus get some experience, exposure and perhaps LOR, but I don't need the credits for my university. You mentioned private practices... so I thought maybe you would have some advice :) Is it ok just to try and arrange few weeks in some private hospital/ practice? Thank you very much for all the videos, honestly love them! :)
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
The private practice physicians have contracts to be preceptors/educators for my school. But I'm sure you can arrange to work with a physician a few weeks as long as the physician allows it.

Mascara > eyelash extensions I tried them and I noticed that as my fake eyelashes started to fall out, my real eyelashes started to fall out with it. You lose your real lashes and you almost feel like you have to keep getting the fake ones to make it look full.

I'm in Michigan. I'm finishing up my undergrad in Biological Sciences, I have not yet took my mcats, so I was wondering how do you know which medical schools to apply too. should I try to find a particular field of study or should I look for universities with a lot of hospital partnerships... I just am lost completely if you have any advice I would appreciate it.
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
The advice I got when applying to medical school was "spread your net wide and choose later." Its better to have choices once after accepted than be so set on certain schools and not get in. Also, medical schools teach the same thing, it is only in residency that you pursue your specialty.

Hi Jenny! I'm thinking about becoming a dermatology pa and I was wondering if you heard anything good or bad about it. Also, would it be difficult to find a job after pa school? Thanks!
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
During my dermatology rotation, two of the Dermatologist's MA's were applying to PA school. They also wanted to work in dermatology after they graduated. Haven't heard anything negative. As for finding a job after graduation - I think that would depend on your location.

heyy jenny ❤ im a 3rd MD i decided to make 2017 be about these 2 quotes i found: " try to say nothing negative about yourself for 3 days, for 45 days, for 3 months. See what happens to your life. - yoko ono" " this year, try living by the '5 by 5 rule'. if its not going to matter in 5 years, dont spend 5 minutes upset by it. - active in style" Do you have any favourite quote(s) at the moment ?😍
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh - say nothing negative about oneself for 3 months is hard! A quote I just shared with my friends on the blog was "Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you know they're always there"
@buthainaghaithalyahyai14398 жыл бұрын
Jenny Le yes it is very hard! Your quote is beautiful! you know, This is what i love about quotes, some of them, we could be reading everyday but it only takes that one day/situation for it to truly make its impact on you! i really wish you luck in ur journey and im happy that you reached to your definition of happiness!❤❤ xx

I just applied to volunteer at a hospital but I was wondering how I should ask a physician if I could shadow them?
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
You can just ask doctors directly! Or ask the hospital you volunteer at if any physicians are willing to take students. I find that nurses always know which physicians are willing to take students so you you can try that if the hospital gives you a hard time.

What do you mean when you say you are constantly moving around? I know you said your rotations are every four weeks but I cant imagine a school expecting you to literally move every time you have a new rotation for med school....Im just unclear how this works?? Love your channel!!
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
so fourth year is a little different. I have to fulfill certain requirements like internal medicine, surgery, and elective. As long as my clinical rotations fulfill these requirements, I can go anywhere there is a board certified physician whom is taking medical students. It is set up this way because a lot of four year you are doing audition rotations or sub internships at hospitals and residencies you hope to match into. So depending on how you set up your rotations, you can be moving to a different city every 2-4 week or you can be staying one one spot.
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
I spend the last month and a half in 3 different cities, in three different rotations.

I am in high school at the moment and I know that i want to go into medicine but i don't know exactly what i want to do. Is this bad and do i defiantly need to know what i want to do?
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
Not at all. Some of my friends in medical school still struggled with what specialty they wanted to pursue all the way up to third year of medical school. You are not alone. Just expose yourself to as much medicine as possible. This will help you figure out what you want.

hi Jenny Le im a junior in high school and i really want to get a bachelors of science in nursing then go to med school would this choice be helpful? thanks for being an inspiration.!!
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
Tasneem_Channel It depends on why you want to do nursing first. My suggestion is try straight to medical school if that is your ultimate goal.
@tasneemali118 жыл бұрын
Jenny Le thanks for replying I wanted to do nursing first to get the experience and then go to med school to become a pediatrician also I have a question how long would the process of becoming a pediatrician take if I want to be a general pediatrician
@tasneemali118 жыл бұрын
Ms. Alexia Thank you

I would recommend going straight. Medical school is 4 years + 3 years of pediatric residency to become a pediatrician.
@tasneemali118 жыл бұрын
Jenny Le so you would recommend not getting a nurse degree and just do my premed requisites and going straight to medicine? Because all of the universities In my state to go to med school I have to have a bachelors degree.would nursing be a long road

@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
Yes Stan and I want to start a family in the near future. I have classmates whom have had children while in med school. Life doesn't stop just because you pursue a career in medicine. As long as you have a supportive partner, you can do it!

Hey Jenny As a med student where does your income come in from? Is it possible to work and study?

Most students take out school loans. I wouldn't suggest working while in med school (unless its at a library or something) because most of your time will be dedicated to studying.
