Media and Democracy: What Went Right? What's Gone Wrong? Part II: Lessons from Recent History

This week we continue the discussion of the role that a media system plays in providing the infrastructure of the modern public sphere, focusing on it core contributions to public opinion formation and securing a common culture in a complex and diverse society, and also the way in which the pre-digital mass media system of the second half of the 20th century played this role sufficiently well to secure these critical goods, but not without constrictions and distortions.
