Mr. Patron (tour guide) has a lot of wisdom and yes, he is definitely right. That said, I really don't think the younger guy was trying to scam you. He was polite. And yes, Tim...you are very street smart and would never get taken advantage of by paying more. You let the old man have his say, and that my dear brother, shows your character. You were so respectful, even though your tour guide overreacted just a little bit. All in all, every person was very nice and it's such a blessing to connect with beautiful people on your travels. Tim, you have the privilege of journeying all over the world and you live each day with a passion to connect, learn and show love and respect. You handle yourself well and you treat others so good. You are a blessing to this world and people's lives; you have such an amazing effect on everyone that you come into contact with. That dude was looking out for your ass. HE nailed it, you fell right into their trap.. The guy with the alcohol who easily convinced you to come around corner with him for a drink. Talk talk talk then next thing you do you have a bar tab owed and no friends around.... I am glad that the elder man wasn't too irritated to come back and help you. He sees that hustle too often and you can tell how sick of seeing it he is. Especially with his reiterating the point over and over. Be safe and don't trust everyone. Also. Subscribed! Για σας! I’m Guatemalan born and I’m sad for my garífuna brothers and sisters. I think they are equal as Mayan, mixed and European Guatemalan. But they didn’t care, I mean, the government about garífunas. It’s heartbreaking. Shout out to my garífuna brothers and sisters and obviously my Mayan people and all my Guatemalan compatriots. Grifinican Lady briads hair for 5 minutes and makes $8.00. That's time money management. Notice she turned her head when the dude tried to low ball her for $5.00 or $6.00. Hey Tim, these people are not dumb as you have persived. They respectfully, speak 3 to 6 languages. From Creole (Haitian), Garifuna, British English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese (quoting historical culture). Livingston, Puerto Barrios, used to be filled with Jamaicans, Chinese, English, Germans, Americans, and of course, Guatemalans because of the commerce and being right on the mouth of Caribbean sea. Yes, Guatemala is full of great surprises at every corner. My advise to you is to gently respect their culture and their conditions as they lived, life. I am glad you are having a great time and are keeping safe and out of trouble. RESPECT is key.

That guy has no patience and doesn't realize that Tim is a tourist, so he's innocent to their way of life. Its no different than some foreigner visiting where ever anyone reading this lives. Anyone can be victim to fraud and deception, if one is a tourist. I know many would be in serious trouble if they were to visit where I live, there are far more dangerous places in the world than that town. As an elder, that guide should have spoken to Tim with respect, kindness and told him about the risks sitting down and drinking with those people. Tim is an adult, not a child so more consideration should have been shown to that guest. Due to the negative attitude I would have told that guy to walk. The man drinking I'm sure after a few drinks would be more than happy to guide Tim around, and he's seemed to be in a better mood. One cannot enforce their way of life onto others, some people drink and that's o.k. and some don't.

@Timmy Karter I just came across your video about Livingston today. I was raised in NY and now live in North Carolina but was born in Puerto Barrios Izabal, Guatemala. More specifically I am from a town calle el rastro. Thank you for this video show casing a portion of what Livingston has to offer. There's so much more to Livingston, puerto barrios and el rastro regarding the Gariguna people that the rest of the world has yet to see or hear about. That guy you met at 46 minutes roughly, the one that took you from your tour guy, i know him. His a really good dude and very humble. anyway, not sure where you at these days, but, if you ever find yourself in guatemala and want to do a follow up video on guatemala and livingston, I would love to be there and or get you with the right people to show you a bit of everything; garifuna food, garifuna drinks, night life, beach life, day life. and the experience would be at no cost to you. I would just love to see more youtuve videos about garifuna people around the world. Because we are everywhere/. Including Greece, spain. I lived in Spain for over 4 years. I served in the US military, and that that took me every where. Good luck and thanks again.

In Livingston, everywhere you go you have to give some money. The guy was angry because he was missing a client, he asked for money, but he did not tour you to special places. The other guy showed you the experience of drinking guifiti (a traditional garifuna drink), and the last one, showed you the drums and Punta dance. If you stay more days you are going to be amazed by the way Garifuna People enjoy life. For example, New year's eve on the beach. People live on tourism here, just enjoy your time do not judge.

@djoseph5130 7 ай бұрын
@@lynottlives Great question but we lost the language because those that remained on the island ended being enslaved and lost their identity. The ones that got exiled never became slaves, kept their identity, language and culture. Our country just started programs for us to re-learn our culture and language. From what I know tho it's the same for every country, someone from Belize can converse with someone from Honduras easily. I've met Belizean Garifuna people that say so but never met one from Honduras or anywhere else.
@lynottlives

@@djoseph5130 thank you for your thoughtful and helpful answer. That’s very interesting and very sad. I’m from Ireland and we similarly had our native language destroyed by British colonialism. There has been a revival movement for the last century, the language is on all street signs and government documents since independence but it is not heavily spoken unfortunately but there are dedicated schools etc. and small areas of the country where it is the primary language. It would be incredible to bring back Garifuna to Saint Vincent!

I was there on New Years 1973 but across the water at Port Barrios. I was 19 at the time met an older African Carib fellow, was surprised he spoke 4 or more languages without missing a beat. English, Spanish, French and local dialicts. He had worked all his life all over the Caribbean. I hadn't even mastered my own language. Why did I go to school? I should have been born a fisherman on the Mosquito Coast.
