While exaggerated, OCP is sadly realistically believable as a successful company. Including acts like not even caring if absurdly expensive projects work. (Have you seen the downright broken money sinks that have been real US military projects within the last century?) The only part of OCP that doesn't hold up today is that the top execs actually seem to care about OCP continuing to exist, rather than pocketing as much as they can before golden parachuting themselves into another company.

The idea behind OCP moving into non military civilian areas, was so that they could test their weapon concepts before they marketed them as weaponry, and save themselves some R&D as well as government oversight. Basically the same idea they reused for the Fallout games with Vault-Tech.

" Basically the same idea they reused for the Fallout games with Vault-Tech." Except not really. Originally the Vault Experiments were sociological experiments done to gather data in the event that the nuclear war f***ed the planet beyond salvation and the Enclave had to temporarilily relocate in a space base. Then Bethesda took control of the IP and transformed the Experiments into "everything goes", Which makes no sense because the experiments started AFTER the bombs fell. And at that point what are the results good for?

Robocop wasn't based on Spawn. Robocop can out in July 1987 and Spawn didn't come out until nearly 6 years later in May 1992. You are right he WAS based on Judge Dredd. It was also based on the Japanese toku series Space Sheriff Gavin and Marvel comic character ROM the Space Knight.

I think the reason ED209 was useless in an "urban pacification" role was because OCP always intended it to be for military application - anti-infantry/anti-material role. Trying to jam this walking tank into a policing role was just a way of squeezing more profits. Verhovens satire is incredibly smart and prescient and often gets ignored because his movies are also Bay-level explodey.
@xenon3990
@xenon3990 8 ай бұрын
That’s one thing I like about the remake. They showed ED-209s in the pacification of Iraq, and those things were absolute beasts. The only reason the robocop project took off in the remake was because they were too lethal and didn’t have an accurate Civilian/Hostile system, prompting OCP to go with the human part as a fallback.

Fun fact: the first guy to get turned into hamburger by ED-209 is played by a guy with whom I studied acting. It was a long time ago, and I'm sure he's changed, but at the time he was kind of a jerk. I used to go to _Robocop_ with all the other actors who knew him. We went repeatedly. When he started getting shot full of holes, we'd all cheer and clap. The other people in the theater thought we must be really psychotic for enjoying it so much.

@@Palocles sorry I didn't see this sooner. Ken was a fun guy. I used to lift weights with him, and I know he thought us cheering him being shot was good natured. I actually have a story about lifting weights with him ... We were doing squats one time, and I was on my last rep, which as usual was the hardest to finish. As a dutiful partner, he was coaching me on. Suddenly, he blurted out of nowhere: "C'mon, Bill, get it up there! Ya gotta have _biiiig_ legs to take curtain calls!!" I burst out laughing and damned near killed myself trying to not collapse under the weight. Another time, we were auditioning for a musical, which means you have to sing. Ken chose the song "I Get a Kick Out of You" from the musical _Anything Goes_ . The second verse of the song begins with, "Some get a kick from cocaine." Well, Ken was a recovering addict, something he made no secret of. When he hit that verse, he really over-sold it, and those of us watching couldn't help but start cracking up -- which was his intent. I have a lot fond memories of Ken. 😁

@@AndrooUK not sure what you mean by this. You disliked my anecdote? Not sure why -- the cheering was entirely good-natured. An arrogant mistake was the first thing to come to mind(it's pretty cliché though). If the baddy has comrades one could defect and release some intel to form a high risk plan. A earlier character that was forgotten about(though you may not have someone like this and even if you did he'd need some high social standing and leadership skills to assist judging by how powerful I'm guessing your villain is). Some sort of weakness like a prostitution or drug addiction. A power up for your protagonist. A really clever bluff from your protagonist. Sometimes the good guys lose.(though these endings are difficult to do and you may be better off with mutual destruction) And the best of all *the power of friendship* I just listed some endings I've read and seen in the media I like. In all honesty you may have to rewrite your story a few times, getting a good ending is very difficult and the longer your story is the more difficult finding the right ending could be. I'd recommend looking at short stories from different artists, or looking at some forms online as I am just a heavy consumer of narratives so my opinions should be taken with some salt. I do wish you the best of luck with your writing though, what's it about anyways I may have some interest in reading it.

IT should be based on what the villains skills are imho, i.e. if they use robots like in this movie, you should probably have a tech genius who could disable or take control over their robots or create ones that are better than the villains, or like how in batman begins they taint the water supply, if someone new how to create an antidote or neutralize the chemical that would be realistic> I would leave room for some things where you would have to suspend your disbelief a little though just to make it more interesting and we do sometimes read to escape reality for a bit so a mixture of believable and "artistic license" is excusable. hope this at least sparks some thoughts for you, and good luck with your book.

The main problem with a lot of the earlier complaints is that it was a case of OCP being big enough that one department didn’t know what the other was doing. They say early on that the only reason the Robocop project even exists is because of problems with the ED 209 project. The CEO doesn’t know how corrupt Dick Jones is so he’s not worried about Robocop coming back at them because in his mind they’ve done nothing wrong. Dick meanwhile tries to kill the Robocop project at every opportunity.

As a corporate legal and compliance officer, OCP’s bungling lawlessness looks even more absurd to me than it did when RoboCop first came out when I was a kid. Throughout the RoboCop series, there are a few scenes where company lawyers are brought in for damage control, but I sometimes think that OCP is what would happen to many large companies if they had no internal compliance people like me, with both legal and business education, to vet projects BEFORE they became giant public F-ups that the external lawyers have to try to clean up.

Here's an interesting group of Villains, if you're into literature, or animated shows - the various Vermin Horde leaders of the Redwall series by Brian Jaques. 22 novels, and three seasons of animated shows based off of three of the books. The series is usually centered in a region known as Mossflower, specifically in a location called Redwall Abbey. Most of the characters are of the rodent variety, mice, moles, voles, shrews, hedgehogs, rats, stoats, weasels, ferrets, with hares, badgers, foxes, wildcats, wolverines, and various birds and reptiles thrown in as need be. Redwall is a place of plenty - food, water, shelter, healing knowledge - and it seems that every villain that shows up, wants to take it over. Some have come close, but it always seems like, at the last possible moment, the Warrior of Redwall shows up with The Sword, and a whole lot of friends, and soon the Horde is lucky if any survive the Retreat! Now, Redwall, by itself, has no standing armed forces, with the Sword of Martin the Warrior being picked up by whomever the Spirit of Martin chooses to take on the role of Warrior in times of need, for the most part. But, nearby are the Gousim Shrews, and the local Otter groups, plus various squirrel bands, who act as something of an effective militia, specializing in hit-and-run tactics, and basically convincing small vermin bands that "Coming here is your Death!" Against more serious foes, there is the Long Patrol hares from Salmadastron Mountain, who are basically the RAF on foot, always saying "Wot, wot?", but it can be something of an adventure getting there and coming back. Then there's the Vermin Hordes. Oddly enough, the ones who are pirates and corsairs must have access to decent technology, as they have access to ships, of the sort that can hold 100+ crew members of various ranks. Also, they tend to show up in numbers. Thing is, they tend to be filled with scheming backstabbers, ones who would kill the fella next to them, if they thought that they could get away with it. They also seem to think that if you kill the Boss, you become the Boss. Horde Leaders also tend to be cruel, killing loyal followers for no reason beyond something as trivial as "You dropped your shield while on Inspection!" Thing is, it seems that the Rank-and-File Vermin would be content doing things like farming, fishing, and generally living peacefully, until someone decides "I want to make a Name for Myself" and forcefully drags all the other vermin under their leadership under the threat of "Join, or Die!". Beyond joining to keep the Boss from killing them, and the promise of Loot and Plunder, or a desire for power, there's usually no motive for the average horde member to stay, aside from threat of a horrible death. In fact, some of them do occasionally pull off an effective "Screw this, I'm outta here!" and desert the Horde, surviving the book at any rate. The smartest Horde Leaders I've noticed are Verdauga Greeneyes, a Wildcat who'd taken over the area prior to Redwall being built - after crushing the local resistance, he was smart enough to forge a truce/peace with the Woodlanders, and used his forces to keep other vermin bands away, and collect "taxes", and while the locals didn't like him, they tolerated him. However, his daughter, Tsarmina, ruined this peace when she murdered Verdauga, and became a tyrant. Funny enough, her brother, Gingivere, wasn't a bad sort, who actually assisted the woodlanders, after they rescued him from a false imprisonment when he was framed for the murder of his father. He became a farmer after the war. Another smart Horde Leader was Bowfleg the Warlord. He was an overweight ferret who didn't do much, but was content with the area that he and his band had settled in. Then he got murdered by Swartt Sixclaw, who wanted to use the band for his own purposes. Then, there is Tramun Clogg - a pirate stoat, whose crew actually liked him. His problem was that he had made a few mistakes in the battle with Badrang, his former partner-turned-enemy, least of which being that his ship was destroyed, and Badrang eventually captured him and the crew, enslaving Clogg and giving the crew the choice between death, slavery, or joining his horde. Other Vermin Horde leaders are sometimes smart enough to go "Wait, attacking Redwall is a bad idea. Let's just kidnap someone and demand what it is we want, or terrorize the countryside." Doesn't always work out the way they want it.
