A lot of this could have made a fair amount of sense if the writers had just given it a little more thought. Instead of just making the umbrella board a bunch of religious doomsday fanatics, it could have been framed as a preemptive continuity measure. They realized the game was up after Raccoon City and knew there was no way to stop it so they buried themselves to wait it out and re-emerge as a highly organized and well equipped apocalyptic superpower that they controlled. In the mean time, the clones were to create an army that was perfectly suited for a post social world filled with zombies and mutants (the plaga tests) and control the policial structure of the societies that sprang up so make them allies or easy to take care of. All of the tests, clones, adventures, etc in the movies after apocalypse could have been better framed as events in an overarching war between the survivors/umbrella deserters and umbrella itself as it attempted to ready the world for the return of the board. That would have been a pretty interesting story and pulled all of the movies together about as well as they could have given the erratic nature of the writing. Ideally of course, they would have had all that mapped out from the beginning but that is another story.

like transformers, it appeals to a certain audience - not the people who've played any of the games... still waiting on the zombie apokolypse
I think that most of what is wrong with the movie incarnation of the Umbrella Corporation is that Hollywood believes audiences are afraid of the concept of "evil," and as a result they never allow a movie's antagonist to have any nuanced identity. Think about it: a real-life Umbrella corporation would surely be smart enough to, as MZ pointed out, solve (or at least control) the world's problems and make a profit at the same time. This angle of Isaacs and his cohorts being religious fanatics and intentionally destroying the world is marginally palatable to a wide audience where as the totally realistic economic and socio-political exploitation of the world's population is... Well, it just hits a little too close to home for comfort, doesn't it? Think about it from that perspective and it's really not much of a mystery.

In the Resident Evil games what always made me laugh about Umbrella Corporation was its employees. Especially the ones that turn around and try to steal bio weapon samples. They are supposed to be so smart, some of them can't make a clean get away without becoming infected, nor can they keep control over weapons like the Tyrant. I enjoyed watching them die because they were too stupid to survive.

I know this doesn't quite fit but... Team Magma, Team Aqua, Team Galactic, Team Flare and Team Plasma, all from Pokemon, had plans almost as convoluted as the above. And with about as much common sense too.
@marley78685 жыл бұрын
I'd argue it would be more like if aqua swapped between having team aqua goals and seek to achieve them and then randomly switch to team magma plans for no reason
@Stargatelover5 жыл бұрын
@@marley7868 Team Aqua wanted to rise sea levels to make more ocean, for no apparent reason. Team Magma wanted to expand the continents by reducing water, using the Global Warming Pokemon. Not only is it kind of ironic, but those are some of the most convoluted villain goals in Pokemon. Minwon Jang Yeah, in terms of how much sense they made at least. Team Rocket is just Pokemon Yakuza basically with no bigger goal than getting money out of Pokemon and Team Skull is a simple gang of losers really, Island Trial Drop-Outs basically make up a mayority of their members and Guzma isn't even trying to accomplish anything nefarious other than working with Lusamine who he likely has the hots for. Considering the woman looks not much older than her own children, well... The worst offender though is Team Galactic, who literally try to erase reality using literal gods, to make their own universe. Convoluted, check. Pointless? Yeah. Dangerous? Definitely. No net gain? You know it. So yeah, they are really the worst offender in the "Villains too stupid to win" category. Then again they all were too stupid to stop a bunch of 10 year old kids from foiling their plans so...
@dustwarewolf55325 жыл бұрын
In all fairness to Team Galactic, destroying the world so you can remake it in your own image is actually a fairly standard villainous master/mistress plan. It was also Porky's evil plan during Mother 3, as just one of many examples, and it was by NO means a plan that was "convoluted" in the usual negative connotation of the word. So I really have no problem with Team Galactic's plot. And while Team Plasma's plan WAS stupid, they did manage to essentially overthrow The Elite Four, and in the magna even managed to capture and BLEEPING CRUCIFY all of Unova's gym leaders. The magna gets QUITE thematically dark at times.

I only saw the first two movies. But it's admirable how they stayed true to the games and turned their straightforward zombie story into an increasingly incomprehensible clusterfuck with every sequel. The clip of Trump at Umbrella building the wall was hillarious.

Stayed true to the games? What movies were you watching?
@Mayhzon5 жыл бұрын
@@DoomWar1 True to the games in the sense of how shitty their plot got. Take the first three games and it's alright. Resident Evil 4 still had a decent self-contained story, but was starting to make less sense. Resident Evil 5 was a mess with 6 shitting all over the franchise to the degree that it needed a hard reboot, which it got with Resident Evil 7. There were countless of spin-offs between the main line games and their stories got worse each time, too. The plot became ever more obviously a string of events chained together to make action happen. And while that is generally the purpose of a story in media, a good plot has something to say and keeps up the facade of good writing. Bad plot is obvious in it's intention and breaks immersion.

It hilarious almost every movie retcons its predecessors. I feel like the movies would be less frustrating if you watch each one as a standalone. Still mediocre films though. Although I do enjoy 1-2 to a degree.
