How hard is capturing a xeno? Stock a ship with androids. Put a trap in there. It doesn't have to be a super scifi trap. A cell with a cow inside. Xeno comes in, you sedate xeno. Thas it. You don't need a clueless team, you don't need like war equipment. According to AVP you can just put them in a freezer and they'll stay alive somehow. Presumably keeping them cold enough to impair them doing a rampage is possible. Imagine of like Walmart sent a bunch of employees to Africa to capture a live lion but didn't even tell them.

In fairness to Alien, the movie doesnt make the 'union guys' seem lazy, it makes them seem realistic. Notice that the characters in Alien speak like real people and have the motivations of real people. Showing the low level workers being more concerned with their pay than any scientific discovery makes perfect sense because thats what would happen in real life. It's also interesting to note that Ripley's character, who's second in command, also has very little interest in the discovery/distress call and just wants to get home to her daughter

Maybe strap the gun to it that so handily shut down the Xenomorphs wave attacks. Give it a generator for power. Probably more space efficient than having your aliens dig a giant cave and then feed a queen. They're much easier to remove too, if the aliens are powerful enough to destroy a city/company/colony then the only weapons that can challenge them are things like orbital/chemical/nuclear weapons. Which again raises the question why you wouldn't just start off by nuking your enemies, instead of waiting for the aliens to kill them so you can launch nukes anyway.

@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin 2 жыл бұрын
Most androids in the universe are like that, they are hardwired to be unable to directly hurt a human. Androids get itchy when they're indirectly hurting people sometimes. To most people in the universe, combat androids without these limits is just a scary myth. Bishop is a pretty good example of military androids, it's a dude you can have walking around the ship while everyone is in stasis, and work as an assisting XO. One Bishop per 90 marines is also a good figure of how rare these things are. There's rumours of everyone from the communists to one of the companies creating a platoon of combat androids. The cost for that would be mind-bogglingly expensive. It's simply a lot cheaper to get a few contractors and marines killed.
@TheLAGopher
@TheLAGopher 2 жыл бұрын
Ash was having a direct conflict between his basic programing not kill a human, and his company directed override to save a specimen at whatever cost. Ask knew Ripley being in command and armed with the knowledge of the true nature of the mission, was the last best shot for the human survivors because Parker was a hot head and Lambert a coward. Ash knew Ripley would destroy the ship and escape with the surviving crew on a shuttle if she had her way,so he had to move to take her out. His reasoning was that even had Parker destroyed him after killing Ripley, his aggressive nature would have likely led him to take on the alien with a high likelyhood he would he killed.
@mrdavman13
@mrdavman13 7 ай бұрын
Wrong. Ridley Scott said Ash wasn’t trying to kill. He was trying to rape her. But since he’s an android. He doesn’t have the parts. The whole movie is about body horror and autonomous invasion. Rape is exactly that.

Lax safety is practically a religious tradition that must be practiced to the fullest in the setting. Weird alien egg that opens? Stick your face over it! Refuse to allow crew with alien lifeform stuck to his face back on board? Naaaaah. Entire colony goes dark? Just send a dozen guys with guns and a middle-manager. Alien worm thing? Lean over and stare it in the face even though it could very well be venomous and react to staring as a threat!

Most of W-Y is doing exactly what it says on the box, they expand extrasolar colonies. Living in a company colony is like living in a company town but someone owns the machines that make the air. There is a bunch of other companies hanging around who also compete for the resources of the frontier. The companies all compete for tobacco farms, lantanium mines, habitable colony space etc.
@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin 2 жыл бұрын
W-Y keeps a lot of stuff secret, sometimes it leads to employees and middle managers misunderstanding what's happening. And W-Y itself can't do what we do and hop onto the fan wiki to read about xenomorph physiology. The companies and nations are in a cold war over the frontier, no one is sharing what they know. W-Y start to create a sort of division for this task. They start setting up "dogcatcher" teams using the scraps of knowledge they find. If the aliens have acid blood, maybe we put our dudes in acid-resistant environment suits etc. Or maybe we test this cryo-trap to learn how they function in extreme cold. It's still a work in progress that regularly ends in overwhelmed dogcatchers. Alien life itself is nothing new in the Aliens universe. There are several worlds with alien life, scores of which can already support human life. The terraforming process can involve altering an existing ecosystem to fit human needs. Most W-Y people do exactly what it says on the tin. They invest in extrasolar company towns, they create products. W-Y has a brewery. They own colonies with tobacco farms.

@@occam7382 They're not the only company around. Space exploration is a huge cost, only large consortiums can afford it. Virtually no one owns a private spaceship in Alien. The players are always chumps on the job working for someone else. Nations have consolidated as well. United Americas covers the old USA, Mexico and most of South America I think. The Three World Empire is an amalgam of the UK, parts of western Europe/Asia and Japan. The Union of Progressive Peoples, the space-soviets, are some kind of sino-russian super-block.

The Frontier is already home to a lot of faith. Some of the cults are just more messed up than others. There is a satellite where luddites are being held after a purge. Most media is still local or transported as solid info storage. The spacewalkman never died in Alien.

Or even admit to the existence of Xenomorphs, and call it realistic fiction. Then you get the bonus that the next time you send a bunch of clueless idiots to collect specimens with the worst planning possible, they at least know the risks of the creatures well enough that you can just say "We've found a collection of specimens of that species. Here's a containment chamber module, and a bunch of space forklifts. Put the eggs in the chamber and bring them to this well prepared military research outpost we have developed. You get a bonus based on the number of still living eggs you manage to collect." Oh, wait, forgot, doing that would've actually successfully collected Xenomorph specimens ages ago, and they'd have finally realized that these things' only real military utility, even if they gained control over them, is as suicide assassination mission units unless you manage to recreate a queen to use as a planetary takeover system.

I fucking hate that Jurassic World tried dragging that shit up. Why would anyone want to militarize dinosaurs when modern military technology has replaced the need for animal labor in warfare except for a few niche roles like bomb sniffing dogs? They created the Indoraptor and said that in a real war all those fancy drones can and will just get hacked by the enemy but they forgot that the Indoraptor is hackable by anyone with a laser pointer. Even taking that aside drones can be shutdown and placed in storage when not in use but Indoraptors would require space, food, water, and of course unlike drones run the risk of acting on their own at all times. The only good news is that dinosaurs don't pose an existential threat to life on Earth.
@legendary5733

@@OsirisLord Because if WW3 starts happening all our fancy modern tech will be long gone. Since it will reduced us down to tech from the 20th Century or even lower. Any country will start using old primitive technology such as swords, shields or animal warfare. Since nukes (for last resort) will just reduced our society to live in destroyed cities, low food shortages, small population and primitive weapons. Since tanks, planes, battle ships, trucks, drones and eventually guns. Will be pretty much gone or useless since they require oil, ammo and maintenance. Which I don't think will be getting any resources for those anymore. So it's best to go back to primitive weapons for the time being just to survive or fight for the last breath for victory in desperation. Since Jurassic World is pretty much a world with dinosaurs existing. It's best to use dinosaurs as weapons against our enemies in case if we do end up in that situation. Also the Indoraptor lacked in terms of obedience and empathy. Which is why it's a prototype because of that reason so they need blue's DNA for the next generation to be more obedient. The laser was only used for the prototype to show off the buyers how intelligent it is. Since they needed to presented as their future operation but as a prototype since they needed something to prove how intelligent it is to follow human commands. At least until they add Blue's DNA for the next batch to make it obey human command through Owen Grady's research on raptor training. Which the buyers decided to bid it anyway, which Eli Miles and the seller were shocked that they are actually buying it. It was only a presentation it was not supposed to be sold at all. Which you can see Eli Miles facial expression going "Fuck it. Do it. Sell it." It was a careless stupid decision but it was a business decision. After all like he said "This prototype is worth 28 million dollars right now. Relax will make some more."

Add to that the orbital infrastructure and imaging that would be done before even landing on the planet, that ship wasn't tucked away in a cave or crevasse it was just sitting in the open. @@chaoticwj1772 Or for profit at least. Also, let's not forget about Biosyn, the rival corporation who thought the best way to prevent InGen from getting a monopoly on dinosaur cloning was to straight-up steal specimens from them.

Noah G The villains in the movie aren’t part of the government, they’re from BioSyn. They’re not using ‘just dinosaurs’ as weapons of war because regular dinosaurs are used for agriculture, industrial, and sport hunting, and when it comes to weapons of war, they’re using genetic power to create new species against the most advanced military technology. Yes, weaponizing dinosaurs is a bad idea, and I don’t want it in the future, but that doesn’t mean it’s built on logic. Animal weapons are fragile, but they’re stealthier, fast, agile and quieter, and since genetic engineering is possible in this universe, the company would use genetic power to create a species more advanced that it would hide from the most advanced military technology. And, yes, controlling animals may be difficult, but that doesn’t mean they can be rogue when you could raise an animal. I know you’re sick and tired of dinosaur weapons in fiction, but you’re missing the point. Unlike in other dinosaur lore, the movie knows that you can’t control the laws of nature. That’s the main theme of this Jurassic franchise: mankind’s arrogance playing God would lead to the danger of uncontrollable science if not careful when handling technology. Stop treating the films like SyFy B movies regardless of their themes!

Villians to stupid to win: I think the US military from half-life deserves to be on this list Rather than working together with the facility to contain the outbreak of invading aliens they choose to cover up the incident by killing everyone involved, which just leads them to making enemies of everyone on the base, particularly Gordon Freeman who kills huge scores of them. And depending on if you believe it's canon or not in Opposing Force, that takes place during the 1st game, after the situation at Black Mesa goes out of control cause the military are losing to the aliens, the Government sends in the Black Ops to cover up, the original cover up team, by killing all military and any other remaining personnel who are still alive in the base this is one of many excerpts that puts this into perspective Gordon: You know it's probably the military who put these trip-mines here to begin with, and they just go and run into them! I don't get it. They bomb each other, they can't figure out who the civilians are, and they can't duck. I mean look how easy this is.

Advanced Sci-fi Civilisations Too Stupid To Exist: The Terran Empire from Star Trek (Mirror Universe): decided to kill the first aliens they encounter (because they came to steal their jobs or something) without worrying that their post-apocalyptic world has no chance of defending against the aliens deciding to bomb them from orbit, and yet they get away with it because the Vulcans who seem to hold some Prime Directive decide that naah there's no reason why we can't just bomb them captured diplomatic ship or just beam away the said ship; then the still recovering Earth after WWIII rapidly becomes a regional power while said Vulcans who suffered from their first contact don't do anything to stop it and get quickly conquered, then said Empire quickly manages to conquer all the nearby systems and manages to create a powerful setting, yet they will backstab each other at the slightest perceived weakness, only to fail half the time and then the mutineers aren't punished properly, and manage to rise again, backstab each other yet again. Yet, despite this state of chaotic ruling, they are still able to build ships by worker slaves that apparently no one ever suspects of trying to sabotaging, even though sabotaging technology happens all the time, and even during very important missions (see the ENT two-parter). Meanwhile alien rebellions keep popping up every time they perceive weakness, and the good ol' Terrans don't join forces, but rather continue to backstab each other like a bunch of masochists. The only way their Empire saved is by technology or characters from our universe, not once, not twice, not even three times, but rather FIVE freakin' times! And to add more salt to the injury, after Kirk tells the very cold logical mirror Spock to tone down with the mass murder, the very logical Vulcan decides to begin a series of illogical reforms, all while still surrounded by hostile powers ready to conquer them at a whim, which causes the Empire to collapse, and ends up being conquered by a joint alliance of two races that usually hate each other (Klingons and Cardassians). So yeah, the Terrans are so awful that in the face of imminent destruction by an external threat, they would rather backstab each other rather than cooperate, while two hostile alien races, one being known and prideful for being violent and the other for being quasi-fascistic which never liked each other have had no trouble finding common ground and even being successful in eliminating a dangerous external threat.

Now since the Terran Empire is basically Rome 2: Space Boongaloo, I would assume that they might have been more competent at the start of their existence, when they were still a republic without constant backstabbing. Then when they started being bogged down by decadence luck was on their side in the form of the 23rd century Defiant being found in the 22nd century. The technological jump that came from that ship gave them the edge needed to remain competitive, but as we saw in later episodes set in the Mirror universe they were never able to keep up with the Prime Universe and were ultimately defeated. TDLR: the Terran Empire survived as long as it did only thanks to tech stolen from the Prime Universe.

Discovery shows that Empress Georgio was the height of their empire, the self-defeating nature of their empire proved that they always doomed to collapse. While she was attempting to slowly edge in reforms to make the Empire more stable, even those slight attempts at stability ended in assassination attempts against her. But then again if Discovery hadn't traded places with the Mirror swap maybe she would have eventually succeeded in stabilizing the empire and prevented the eventual collapse.

Personally, I honestly like the convoluted timelines in the franchise and how it leaves a lot up to the interpretation of each individual viewer. Quit a few Alien fans that I’ve talked to also still like to consider Predator and AvP franchises as part of the greater universe because it makes it feel more lived in.

In one of the Aliens comics, WeYu did actually send an entire team of reprogrammed androids to capture Aliens. The androids didn't even realize they were androids somehow. It didn't work out so well (the aliens wised up and killed most of the androids, and those who survived had a personal crisis upon realizing they weren't human, whoops) but at least no warm-blooded humans were killed in the mission. Just artificial ones, which is arguably(?) better because they can be repaired or installed onto a blank from a backup.

I think (but it hasn't been confirmed far as I know) that Weyland Yutani wants to be able to grow ships and buildings using Engineer/Jockey tech, and they think they can only do that by reverse engineering Xenomorphs. Also if they could get their grubby hands on a stable colony they could declare themselves the sole proprietors of *the entire galaxy forever* and anyone who has a problem with that can talk to the walking sexual assault metaphor - a weapon that costs about as much as a couple of crates and a handful of starship fuel, and can wipe a whole colony.

There is an opposing faction in the Aliens universe. The UPP, Union of Progressive People, basically space commies. They were to be introduced in the original Gibson script for Alien 3 and this was recently adapted into a comic book story by Dark Horse Comics. They were antagonists in the excellent DS Aliens game, Aliens Infestation.
