Medical Interpreting Ethics Part 1.5: Review of Part 1 & Introduction of New Concepts [REVISED]

In this video, I first very briefly go over the "Big 3" medical interpreting codes of ethics that are required knowledge for the U.S. national certification exams, as well as the three core values outlined by the NCIHC. After that, I briefly go over the first three ethical principles from the NCIHC, in the order they are presented in the standards of practice: accuracy, confidentiality, and impartiality. Then, I give an in-depth overview of the remaining ethical principles: respect, cultural awareness, role boundaries, professionalism, professional development, and advocacy.
This provides a very brief overview of what is covered in part 1 of the class, and gives a more thorough introduction to the ethical principles discussed in the second part of the class. Special attention is given to the difference between the ethical principles of impartiality & role boundaries, as well as what it looks like to respect a patient's autonomy (versus not respecting a patient's autonomy). I also give an in-depth overview of the ethical principle of advocacy.
