I am a physician and went to OHSU many years ago. I was also on the admissions committee for a short time. I can tell you that your application looks very similar to many that apply. He's right that you need to keep doing some clinical/shadowing work if you didn't get in this year. However, it was likely a coin flip between you and another applicant. Definitely create a positive, cohesive narrative that highlights why you are the person that should be getting an interview. Also, doctors like things that are short, sweet and to the point. Good Luck. I know you can do it. (Also, apply to more places, like I said, it was likely a coin flip between you and other applicants. All you need to do is get into 1 program.)

She didn't talk about how it was actually meaningful and what impact she could potentially have on the lives of those with those experiences. I like that Dr.Grey just sees through all these setups. It's extremely informative. I also agree that it's far too negative. Medical School is freaking hard, no one needs someone running around saying "Why are we doing this?", "Oh no, I know I'm going to hate this rotation." I'll be blunt and say it like it is. Awful application. Horrible. She has great stats on paper, but thats the only thing she has keeping her afloat in the conversation. Zero community service and zero shadowing/clinical experience, yet she talks about how she wants to help underserved communities. When she applied to only 4 schools, it tells me she automatically assumed she would get accepted and completely overestimated how hard it is to get an interview, and not willing to make the sacrifice to uproot her life. Her personal statement did not mention at all why she wants to be a physician and was generic and cliche. Not a single thing in her application explained why she would want to be a physician, and I am not convinced she really wants it.

I think one thing Dr. Grey alludes to in his advice and what is commonly missing from the multiple applications he creates videos about is servitude. A lot of young people want to be a doctor, like this student, because they are fascinated with medical science. They see the organs of the elk and are intrigued, they don't necessarily think of how the elk died, the children it may have left behind etc. And maybe this person did think about that, my point is not that these people are bad. My point is that empathy and compassion can often be overlooked. The best doctors with the most job satisfaction are there because servitude is fulfilling. I have witnessed many amazing doctors, and every one of them has a greater purpose beyond themselves. So one thing I take away from Dr. Grey's videos is that your school application should not be only about you. It should be about your impact on others like he mentions multiple times in the videos. This is coming from a senior nursing student going into emergency medicine who happened to stumble across his channel, but actually, I think I learned a lot that I will be able to apply in my future as an RN. Thank you Dr. Grey!

Both of my parents are anesthesiologists, and growing up they definitely had to sacrifice a lot of family time to take a call and dedicate to their careers. Had to comment because she is completely valid in wanting medicine to be only a part of her life. People should sign up for what they are most comfortable with and not let themselves be pushed too far. It’s crazy to think pre-meds should DESIRE a life of labor and sacrifice. 7+ years is a lot of time, especially as a woman in your 20s (family planning). If she can avoid moving to somewhere she doesn’t want to, she should continue with that. God forbid you have control over where you live... I wish this woman the best.

What is a “part of your life” though? Some jobs are lifestyles, like my husband in the army. That is not just a job, It is a part of his entire being. @Jessi4Evr3 жыл бұрын
@@TeawithZ I agree some jobs are life styles but I think that if you have to spend $200k+ just trying to GET a job such as a medical doctor, you should not have to lose more such as sacrificing the way you want to live. Personal opinion. Being a physician IS a way of life. You aren’t just a physician from M-F 9am to 5pm. It’s a 24/7 commitment. Stuff like ochem, the MCAT, applying, studying for STEP- it’s a gut check. The only easy day was yesterday. Some find a way to balance it once training is done. Some literally make it their life 100% because they love it. And some quit and go do other things. Again, just my opinion. Maybe I need to stop watching Navy Seal BUDs videos, but this isn’t a job. It’s a profession, vocation, way of life, art, and discipline.
@israeliana3 жыл бұрын
What does this have to with the woman in the video? Also if these physicians don't humanise their patients and understand their communities, then these doctors are machines, replacable, and a liability. You can dedicate yourself to science but medicine is about community and growth and healing.
@Maddawg314153 жыл бұрын
@@israeliana so at the end, she was questioning her motives and drive to be a physician. She only applied to four schools, and used the above as reasoning. It’s a big commitment I get it. But if you aren’t 110% committed, I do not believe you should be doing this. I’m all about interacting with your community- it’s part of that commitment. When I say it’s a way of life, that’s included in it. Making the balance with personal and private life is part of it. But sometimes sacrifice is needed to get into school, not to mention succeed in it and residency. Pay to play. And that’s in question at the end of this video

We all know how hard is it even after you actually make it as an resident. A prospective applicant who seemed overwhelmed about a lot of things will not infer altruistic characteristics or goodwill. It's hard to get shadowing experience. Now with Covid-19, everything froze, postponed, restricted.
@michellej77133 жыл бұрын
If you were interested in medicine, why would you have only been able to shadow during that single year when covid hit? If you were truly interested, you could have started in high school and the first few years of college; the earliest people start applying is the end of their 3rd year in college. Furthermore, after a year of covid-19, there are more opportunities opening up again, with enough PPE and better understanding of the virus. Trying to get shadowing experiences is hard enough on its own, I acknowledge that covid-19 has presented extra obstacles. I'm just trying to say that a year shouldn't be the reason why you don't have any experiences in medicine. Trying to get into medical school requires one to be extremely proactive. Unfortunately, that's just how competitive the field is. It's similar to how business students have to become very proactive with networking and internships in college.
@daybin53033 жыл бұрын
@@michellej7713 It's not just one year though. Covid hit my second semester of college. Then it went all through my sophomore year, and is still in play as we speak. You can't just dismiss someone's struggle because they didn't start shadowing when in high school. That's ludicrous. Many people don't know what they want to do until they take a semester or two of college. So if you combine that with the fact that covid made things near impossible to get outside experience and shadowing it feels really unfair.
@michellej77133 жыл бұрын
@@daybin5303 Let me start by saying I understand that covid has made things more difficult this past year. For people who haven't gotten a chance to start gaining medical experiences, it a tough situation. However, it's important to put into perspective that there are thousands of other students who DID start those experiences back when they were in high school or early college. Those are people you are competing against. Why would an admissions committee pick you instead of someone who's already been able to demonstrate their interest in medicine? That's just the harsh reality of this competitive field. Also, if you haven't been able to gain real world medical experience, how DO you know that you want to become a physician? The reason why Ad Coms value this so much is because they want to make sure you are not wasting your time, money, or efforts. Medical school is grueling. In addition to shadowing, there are other ways to learn more about healthcare, too, such as becoming a direct care worker, CNA, EMS, scribing, and clinical research. About 50% of medical students these days have at least 1 gap year between when they graduate college and when they start school. Some have had a complete career change. One of the most important aspects of applying to medical school is being proactive; gotta make opportunities for yourself and prove to the Ad Com that you truly want to become a physician.

I would be interested to know how to tie in your strong passion for research as to why you also want to pursue medicine. For me, research has been a strong driver because that’s where I feel I belong as a physician. I want to take care of people by not only treating them the best we currently know how, but also by contributing to the ongoing challenge of inventing new medicine, gaining new understanding of disease, to better combat chronic illnesses we face. I worry I have a ton of research hours and I do not want someone to think I don’t want to be a physician because of that, but rather I believe that drive will help me be a better physician in my desired field.

in the personal statement, i thought it was a little weird that she saw this pretty disturbing image and what she took away from it was "oh these organs help us digest food" or whatever. i mean, you're applying to be a doctor, but it feels a little weird to read & also she talked a lot abt the patient interaction factor, which doesn't connect

When hearing this applicant it reminds me of this psychological phenomenon i talk about obsession. She painted a picture for the reader a few to many times in terms of negative. They will become obsessed with hearing negativity and will tend to associate the rest of what she says with negativity

Yup we need advisors. The truth is for many minorities if they went from b and a and some c’s to competing against AP courses, it takes more years to get the academic equalization, thus minorities with lesser gpas but higher scores in latter years will still need extra time, unfortunately so don’t apply getting out from college unless you want to study for and maintain a good Mcat. Also be super productive that next year.
@AlphaNumeric123 Жыл бұрын
She’s not a minority. She’s white and her official status was “not disadvantaged”. She talked a lot about shadowing “not being accessible” but you’re at a university, you’re in an elite bubble now and there are resources just for you. Plus most people don’t have connections lined up unless they’re going to a university in the same town their family is based. She talked a lot about being an underdog LGBT but she did virtually nothing in her application about it other than paying lip service. Her application was indignant uninformed activism

I watched the entire video on mute, when they got to the personal statement, I read. When I got to the bottom of the page, I had to double check that there was not more. I am very confused about what her personal statement invokes about her dream to become a physician. I am sure that she will be a competitive applicant, but I am not entirely convinced of her morality and drive to become a doctor.

Dealt with city officials to get the parking boot removed from her gurney. Successfully intervened when tow truck was called to tow her away because the handicap parking placard was stolen from her gurney.

@levibeam1003 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on how you word it. I think you could probably write a personal statement saying the lines of, “I did this type of experience almost ten years ago, and since then I have not stopped thinking about medicine”. Obviously that’s very sloppy, but I do think you could do something with it. However, I think the main thing is, what experience is it? Is it working in a hospital, being a scribe, working at a pharmacy, shadowing, etc. It all depends

Maybe ask what schools they applied to. I think that has a part in their acceptance/denial. Apply for the school that accepts your stats
@squiggs10023 жыл бұрын
Her case was simply applying to too few schools. Out of state public schools are generally a waste of time to apply to unless they take a substantial percentage of applicants from other states. She basically applied to one school she had a decent chance at UNM, one school which was a reach Oregon since she was an out of state applicant and 2 schools that she had a very small chance of getting into. I am not surprised at all she didn't get in.

I actually didn’t have a problem with the “negative” stuff. If you’re being authentic and telling your story as you see it I don’t see anything wrong. There are just some parts of this process that fall under the ‘gotta play the game’ category. I think her flaw was just school selection.

@Delonse Atrovich What's wrong with nurses? They're literally saving lives during the pandemic while doctors are sitting back and getting free money from big Pharma.
@sandrameesala68042 жыл бұрын
@@CDCrest that is so untrue. Doctors have been so overworked during the pandemic due to hospitals being flooded with patients. Bed counts increased significantly for many departments. Add a hiring freeze and physicians with already low staff and to work double. It got to the point where doctors were straight up leaving the profession due to burn out. Those who stayed were run to the ground. Hospitals are willing to bring on more nurses or float others from other departments, but you can't do that with doctors. I'm not saying nurses didn't work hard. They were tremendously affected too. But to sit and say that doctors remotely gained from it is FALSE
