Thank you so much for this. My mom is a drug attic and I have no connection with my dad, I’m self-supporting and left my first college with a 2.0 GPA, took a year break and decided that I wanted to make a change in the type of doctors there are in this world for the better. I now am making all A’s and in my junior year, I take my MCAT next spring as well as apply, I am very nervous but really pray that I get the opportunity to show who I am and show my passion, dedication and strength through it all, and get accepted to be given a chance. Thank you for your advice!

My C's, D's, and F's were during my best years in college when I had all the resources available but didn't take advantage and why I thought I knew everything, I knew nothing. My B's and A's were during the toughest times in homelessness, personal struggles and injuries, and this stinking pandemic. I am ready for the strictest med school admissions.

Very nice selection on the question, I was in the same boat. I'm still amazed at how much info you need to give these schools and organizations when you are long past 18.

I went to college, and I have no idea what it was… By the way, I agreed to give them $120,000 when I was seventeen years old, with no attorney present. That’s illegal!… They pulled me out of high school; I was in sweat pants, all confused. Two guys in clip-on ties are like, “Come on, son, do the right thing. Sign here and you’ll be an English major.” I was like, “Okay.” That’s right, you heard me: an English major… I paid $120,000 for someone to tell me to go read Jane Austen, and then I didn’t. That’s the worst use of 120 grand I can possibly fathom.

Hello Dr. Gray, I am planning to apply to med school in the 2022 cycle and I am looking for some advice for the situation I am in. My main concern right now is not being able to get any science letters of recs. I have two letters lined up but they are both professors who are non-science, and one letter from a colleague from my EMT squad. Science letters are what I am missing and I have no idea what to do. Any advice would be great, thank you!

Dr what is most disheartening to me is at my state school I cannot get accepted despite getting a 4.0 in 6 upper level sciences while working 2?full time clinical hospital jobs to care for my family because my 2.7 gpa from 20 years ago cannot be overcome with just 6 classes, I need like 10 more classes to get that overall science gpa to a 3.1. My overall gpa is 3.4 but I get absolutely no credit for my first career as a clinician

You can always overcome any deficiencies with regards to your stats. But only if you aren't Asian. I didn't make that rule so don't come after me.

@C B The cognitive dissonance. It's actually true though. Asians are held to a much higher standard than other races. Dr. Grey even acknowledged this in other videos and said that he agrees with this practice. The AAMC stopped publishing data based off of race to avoid backlash. And what you just said about the public losing trust is exactly what is happening. I'm making my transition from corporate to medicine and I've heard countless times that hiring managers tend to discredit applicants from black and hispanic backgrounds because they feel they can't perform to the standard of other races. I can even quote a BLACK FEMALE manager saying she tries to not hire black folks because she feels they just get through the system. This hurts minorities more than anything, but I guess the public is too short sighted. Whatever, you reap what you sow. We are headed towards segregation again anyway.

@C B asians and whites are set to a higher standard, more so asians. my asian friend had a 3.7gpa, 520+mcat, a crap ton of volunteering and shadowing but his gpa was too low for asian standards, he applied but didn't get in, took an extra year of science courses and made it to 3.8 and finally got in, the standards are true.

The game was made before any of us got here. You can thank racism for that. Years of holding back African Americans. They only make up 4% of doctors nation wide. That’s why.

@@nebula3911 it’s not that they are set to a higher standard. It’s that there are plenty of them. Look at stats for everything
