Күн бұрын

My flowerhorn Pollock was sick for a while. An open sore appeared on his tail fin, and it would heal and then it would reappear. This went on for over a month. I thought it was bacterial infection, but it also looked like a pimple rather than open sore. Maybe it’s parasite? I couldn’t figure it out. Also there appeared a pin hole on his pectoral fin. It was literally a pin hole size. Then it grew and ended up ripping the pectoral fin altogether. I knew that was bacterial infection, a type of fin rot. The “cone” or maybe a boil on top of his head is also a concern. I’ve never encountered something like this. If anyone knows anything about it, I would appreciate any kind of feedback.
The medicines were used by following the directions on the box. I don’t like to use medicines in general b/c I’m not a vet and I don’t always know the exact diagnosis, and don't have the knowledge of every kind of specific medicine for specific ailments. Using broad spectrum anti-biotics isn’t always the best course of action, but a last resort, imo. The medications definitely killed lots of beneficial bacteria, imo. This tank never smelled like fish before. I could smell the water several feet away from the tank.
I chose Eheim classic 1500 XL (2260) simply b/c of the amount of filter media it can hold. Also the Eheim’s pumps seem more reliable and last quite a long time, and the location of the pump made sense to me.
The main reason for my flowerhorn getting sick was my old pump, imo. The pump was sort of a cheap pump, and after nearly 2 years of using it, it had lost quite a bit of power. It wasn’t pumping as much as when it was new. The turnover rate had slowed down a lot. I always take the pump apart and clean it at least twice a year. Cheap pumps usually do not last long and lose some of the power after a while. This can affect the health of the fish, imo. This is my best guess why Pollock got sick.
The fish vitamins really did help, imo. Hole in the head disease can cause inflammation in the intestines causing havoc on nutrient absorption. So, by feeding him vitamins, maybe I thought it would help out on absorbing nutrients better. It was probably the combination of the new filter and the vitamins that made him get better.
This was a crazy ordeal. I'm planning on getting a bigger tank for him in the future.
In the end, the pectoral fin grew back some and it continues to grow. Although it doesn’t grow fast since he’s using it all the time. The open sore is gone and there’s a scaring. The sensory pit erosion has nearly healed up, but there’s a small indentation still. The “cone” or the boil has shrunk a bit.
The vitamin I used is called Aquavital, but another good fish vitamins is this one: amzn.to/2SzxZjD
Hikari Sinking Cichlid Gold amzn.to/2iU4L0R
Hikari Bio-Gold Plus amzn.to/2XW53Zc
Hikari Blood-Red Parrot+ amzn.to/2EeGcEM
Eheim Filter the one that has double tap valves included amzn.to/2Y7Bcbu
Siporax amzn.to/32NnFta
Substrat Pro amzn.to/2JXPIgL

It's obvious that you care for your animals, we see what you do for them in such conditions and also how properly set up the other enclosures are, but it seems these flowerhorns are a lost battle by default. An animal messed up by breeding, especially since it's a heavy hybridized fish. With such genes there's no meds that will keep them healthy and long-lived. Plus the fact that they have to be kept in sterile and dull environments in which they probably aren't stimulated enough. Normal cichlids are social fish as well as very smart. It really feels like it's not worth it to torture yourself over them, or the fish themselves especially. It's like getting a pug and expecting it to be fit and without respiratory problems. They don't have naturally functional bodies. It just doesn't work.

As a fish keeper and aquarium enthusiast I have a tip for you. When doing large water changes either remove the fish and put him in a separate bucket that is dechlorinated and temperature matched or do a 50% water Change, top up to the maximum then remove another 50% and top up again. It takes a bit longer but much less stressful for the fish than panicking and trying to swim in barely any water. Fish panic in low water levels and I can see the stress he is under in the video everytime you do a large water Change. The stress from the large water changes could likely be a contributing factor in his slow recovery /worsening symptoms. The bucket way is also less stressful for the fish as they are completely removed during the water Change process. When I do a 80% water Change (or more if there is illness in the tank) I make sure to remove my fish and I feed them whilst they're in the bucket too as they can go to the toilet in there and keeps the waste level down in the main tank. I especially do these water Change techniques when I'm caring for an unwell fish. The least amount of stress possible is best for them. Very impressed with your filter set up and the amount of care you are giving your fish, you really are doing all you can. I would advise feeding fresh food as well if possible to get his immune system strong, I make my own gel food for my fancy goldfish. Vegetables, garlic, paprika, prawns , salmon, green algae and powdered gelatine. Best of luck to you.

Netting the fish and putting it in a bucket would seem to potentially create just as much, if not more stress IMO. These are considerably bigger and stronger than a fancy goldfish.

@thisyellowflower7131
@thisyellowflower7131 5 жыл бұрын
@@MELODYMUNRO I don't tend to net my fish, I carry them with both hands as nets stress them out and can cause scales to dislodge or damage to fins. Nets definitely stress fish. I just think taking him out or preferably doing the 'slower water Change method' would be better than letting the water level drop to so low he feels really panicked. I personally remove and top up remove and top up repeat until I am confident most of the old water is out without letting the water level drop low.

Foo the Flowerhorn it’s also entirely possible that the general dosage of the antibiotics are too much for this specific species of fish. Since antibiotics kill bacteria, it’s not unheard of for the good bacteria that are part of an organisms immune system to die when exposed to a broad spectrum antibiotic. So the treatment effects could have been latent infections that the immune system was able to fight on it’s own, but once it was compromised it was no longer able to fight. Obviously fish are not humans but I do remember seeing a study that vitamin C when given in conjunction with antibiotics helped repair immune systems in the elderly and increase quality of life. If he does have a deficiency it usually takes a long time for it to show up, and I would continue with the vitamins for the foreseeable future.

Salt? Always salt first. Never ever medicate. Medications will kill your fish. Not sure about these fish salt tolerance but salt works on all those. Medicated food, high quality might also help. Certain that is a hospital tank. Otherwise its way too small for that fish.

It is the 2nd this thing happen. May be there is something wrong in your setup. I find most of the bare bottom tanks has this kind of issue. Since i cant harbor sufficient beneficial bacteria to out compete diseases, virus, protozoa etc. I hope pollock cant survive this.

Ingrid Shala the fish will literally attack anything in their tanks. If you look at earlier videos it did have a plant and a rock that he continuously hurt himself on. They don’t like things they like space :)

Well, yes, inbreeding and cross breeding happens in the fish hobby. I suppose he is a man made breed. I've heard this many times. What I don't hear is what about dogs and cats? I think the cause was b/c of the pump losing power lowering turnover rate than anything else. That's why I bought a more powerful and reliable filter.
@DevSommers
@DevSommers 5 жыл бұрын
@@FootheFlowerhorn I completely care about the dilemma of breeding man made desires for dogs. And cats. And horses. And the list goes on and on. I don't support any breeding industry because it's just man playing god for aesthetics. Edit: I should state I'm happy your flowerhorn is better. I just come off as a negative Nancy.

You medicated with Erythromycin in a CYCLED tank? Nope! The poor water quality is why the medicine did not work and why he got worse. The beneficial bacteria would have been killed quickly. You have to do daily changes and redose the medicines each time. The way you tried to use it is the problem.

its recommended that flowerhorns don't have any decorations in their tank to avoid hurting themselves as well as having more space to swim, plus the fact theyre pretty messy and clumsy while eating Id fear even having gravel cause they would probably accidentally eat a pebble or two

Wtf man. How can you let a fish live like that? Just a tank with water and nothing else. I know flowerhorns are delicate but there are things that work. Mono-colored round/smooth semi-large gravel is fine. They enjoy digging up gravel and moving it around, and if you use something that is big/heavy enough to quickly settle they can't make a mess out of it. Big chunks of driftwood are also fine. With plants it's complicated, but water hyacinths work. There are plastic plants that work too. I hate when people keep their fish in nothing but water. It's more humane to kill it than let it live like that.

This is an example of why you always figure out cause before care. In all reality, his symptoms resemble a extreme lack of a micronutrient and agricultural animals will show the same symptoms if they are say, completely deprived of chemical "XYZ".

For me 3 drops of Tea tree oil, several probiotics over a few days, a few Tablespoons of sea salt.( yes fresh water fish need some salt and electrolites), and a few teaspoons of Manuka Honey. Works wonders for our fish. Then 25% water change weekly.
