One Correction for Whoever watching after me. ● Steroid = inhibits Osteoblast, whose function is bone formation. So, Steroid causes osteoporosis. How Steroid causes Osteoporosis ? By inhibiting bone formation by:- 1. Apoptosis of Osteoblasts & Osteocytes. 2.Inhibit intestinal Ca++ absorption. 3.Increase Renal excretion of Ca++. 4.Causes Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (Ref:- Devidson's Principles and Practices of Medicine, 23rd edition) Thank you 😍 for this Excellent video.

Thank you so much. You just saved my life. I was biting my nails, pulling my hair....... I was like "steroids inhibitors osteoclast, then why does steroids cause osteoporosis......." Does this mean overall, steroid both inhibit osteoblast and osteoclast? By the way, do you know why can PTH analog be used for osteoporosis? As I know PTH stimulate osteoclast, so high PTH can cause osteoporosis. Shouldn't PTH analog make osteoporosis worse?

Can you explain the effects of estrogen on bone? Specifically on the levels of OC/ OB/ RANK/ RANK-L/ ALP/ Ca/ PTH/ hydroxyproline? I had an up/down arrow question on this topic. Great video by the way!

Estrogen results in low levels of OC / RANK / RANK-L / Ca . High levels of OB / ALP / hydroxyproline / PTH .

Hello Sir U said that steroids inhibits osteoclasts . But one of the adverse effects of corticosteroid is Osteoporosis ... Please explain .
@pujapatel72363 жыл бұрын
prolonged steroid creates imbalance in cytokines, thus there is a decrease in OPG production, therefore promoting the RANK to RANKL binding which produces more osteoclasts. While the steroid prolonged longevity of osteoclasts, their bone-degrading capacity was suppressed. The inhibitory effect of DEX on bone resorption reflects failure of osteoclasts to organize their cytoskeleton in response to M-CSF

Actually cortisol inhibits OSTEOBLASTS not OSTEOCLASTS ===> osteoporosis !
@hariskhan-xj4wk3 жыл бұрын
steroids MOA=1.causes apoptosis of both osteoblasts and osteoclasts 2.decrease absorbtion of calcium 3.inc excretion of calcium 4.decrease cytokines e.g opg 5.causes hypnogonadism.decrease testosterone more bone loss 6.secondary activation of parathyroid hormone when calcium is low and more bone resorbtion
@WhyNot-si4pj3 жыл бұрын
@@hariskhan-xj4wk Let's conclude that cortisol has an anti- vitamin D effect & a suppressor effect on bone stem cells known as OSTEOPROGENITOR CELLS limiting bone cell division & differentiation !

@MedicosisPerfectionalis3 жыл бұрын
Vitamin D wants to optimize the level calcium in the blood...If blood calcium is low, vitamin D may break down bones to get the calcium out. So, it really depends on the situation!

OPG inhibits RANK-L, not RANK
@nicolekarmo4 жыл бұрын
OPG is a soluble decor receptor for RANKL. It binds RANKL and thereby inhibits osteoclastogenesis. It's ultimately needed to regulate bone mass homeostasis by preventing excessive resorption by osteoclasts. Someone who is OPG-deficient would exhibit excessive bone resorption and severe osteoporosis due to an unchecked OPG-RANKL axis.
