Hi, anyone who menstruates (bleeds every month on their period) is at risk for anemia. If you are a female and you bleed each month, and you have issues with tiredness, dark circles under your eyes and other symptoms of anemia, need to check their Hemoglobin and their stored Ferretin. Hemoglobin should be at least 12, and Ferretin should be at least 50 if not more. I wish someone would have told me sooner.

What are your thoughts on non anemic iron deficiency? Normal hemoglobin and hematocrit, low iron or ferritin. I have pernicious anemia that is well treated, but have all low iron symptoms.

It can happen. What does your doctor think?
@nancynelson242
@nancynelson242 4 жыл бұрын
ER Dr said it’s impossible. I see my hematologist Monday. My iron labs were normal but my ferritin is 47 which I understand isn’t optimal. Should be closer to 70-80 especially since I have pernicious anemia.

Why do you think you have iron deficiency based on the ferritin level alone?
@nancynelson242
@nancynelson242 4 жыл бұрын
At the time I didn’t know. I was thinking all iron levels would be low. I have all symptoms of low iron. No clue what else it could be. I don’t have a thyroid issue.

Can self harming cause anemia.

cuts cause bleeding, bleeding causes anemia. yes, in theory. I have never seen it described in any text book as a common cause of chronic anemia. I read for menorrhagia, (menstrual bleeding) that monthly loss greater than 80mls over time can be enough to cause anemia. However, if someone harms themselves they good bleed and experience acute anemia, which is very bad - as in can be fatal. I hope this is a hypothetical question. I am a medical student so take everything I say with a pinch of salt or if you are anemic a plate of spinach. If you have any other questions please message back. Stay well.

@@m-anatomicallyspeaking2537 sorry that question might have alarmed you. I was cutting quite frequently and probably lost 15mls give or take of blood each day. After a while i had started feeling the effects of this, i fainted a lot, tired constantly etc. I saw my doctor but i didn’t tell them about the cutting, so they recommended me iron tablets. I appreciate your response. I haven’t cut in 9 weeks now.

@@Rose-bi4je Hi Rose, Im glad you replied. to be honest. i was worried when i read your comment. im glad you have stopped doing this. I would really like to advocate telling someone you trust about this. i understand it may be very difficult to tell your doctor about it but i promise you you are not alone and any healthcare provider is isnt anything but kind and nice to you when you confide something like this in them - is bad at their job! . we only get one body in our lives, in fact, really if you think about it, its the only thing we get! we need to take care of it! I don't want to pry about your personal life cause this really is not the place but you must have some real pain if you were doing that. some form of therapy might help, i know i found therapy helpful! Do you know there are probably resources where you live to help you. stay well.

There is a significantly por understanding of how non heme iron is absorbed! I get so mad when people say that heme is superior... how do we even know that like are we just listening to all the studies out there which are funded by animal agriculture??

non heme iron isn't as good because it has lower absorption (about 10% absorbed) vs heme iron (about 30% absorbed). it isn't absorbed as well because the body has to alter the composition of non-heme molecules because they are built differently
