I love how hermits by modern standards are considered strange and smelly people, where as in medieval through to ancient times (considering the one Alexander met) they’re actually usually government employees, pretty wise, and considered like monks

It's beautiful to hear that the belief that one could obtain salvation by a life of frugality and solitude got corrupted into ripping people off for profit while believing that they were still on the path to salvation? Er... OK.

"Man was born for society. However little He may be attached to the World, He never can wholly forget it, or bear to be wholly forgotten by it. Disgusted at the guilt or absurdity of Mankind, the Misanthrope flies from it: He resolves to become an Hermit, and buries himself in the Cavern of some gloomy Rock. Ah! no, Rosario. No longer sustained by the violence of his passions, He feels all the monotony of his way of living, and his heart becomes the prey of Ennui and weariness” ― Matthew Gregory Lewis

working a full time job is also a monotonous way of living that makes one's heart become prey to ennui and weariness, but ok.

Very well presented. Hermits in Spain where called Ermitaños, and were monks that decided to go on their own to live into the wilderness. They used to build small stone churches there, called Ermitas, where they lived, far from villages or towns. There are thousands of Ermitas in Spain, many well preserved and still in service. People used to do pilgrimage to this places as a promise to god after some fortunate thing happened in their lifes, or to be married in secret by the Hermit, for young couples that wanted to escape from arranged marriages. Today, there are couples that decide to get married in those Ermitas, and it is considered very romantic. A priest from a village near by the Ermita is usually the one that has the keys, and performs the weddings.

He was a Russian 18th to 19th century saint, and hermit, called Seraphim of Sarov. So, you know, just doing the normal Russian thing and feedings some bears. I used the picture in the video because it's in the public domain and I needed some more pictures of hermits.

why youtube does not promote educational channels like this?
@MLaserHistory
@MLaserHistory 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if its KZbin or the general public's taste. Like KZbin is definetly not helping but even the most popular history channels like Kings and Generals or Historia Civilis are much smaller than most science channels, not to mention vlogging, or tech, or make up, etc. In the modern day, with the promotion of STEM as the "useful" subjects to learn, combined with the emergence of short form content, like TikTok, there could be an argument made that educational historical content isn't very interesting to people.
