In the heart of Paris, within the majestic walls of the Cluny Museum (Musee de Cluny, Musee de Moyen Age), lies an extraordinary tale woven in threads of silk and wool- the captivating saga of the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries. These six masterpieces, crafted in the late 15th century, beckon us to unravel the enigmatic stories concealed within their vibrant, intricate designs. We also explore Medieval Art and its historical and decorative influence on fairytale stories and design... a glimpse into the ancient European world of romance, mystery, and symbolism.

ABOUT US:
Hello! I’m Vivienne, the châtelaine of a small 19th century neo-Renaissance castle in the Loire Valley of France, which I share with my delightful (and wonderfully funny!) husband, Simon, our daughter, and -whenever possible- lovely friends and family.
This is not our first chateau! 23 years ago, we bought a much larger castle nearby, which we loved with all our hearts. However, nearly 2 decades, many happy memories, countless renovations, and several small fortunes later, we made the very difficult, empty-nesting decision to downsize. With great luck and perseverance, we found our current petit château, which we are now decorating and updating with love, humour, comfort, and -of course- antiques and art!
We adore France and its many unique facets: its people, culture, landscapes, wine, food, art, and history. We also love being surrounded by châteaux, both public and private, which we can explore together! After 20 years here, we have learned many things about living in France, renovating châteaux, and appreciating the extraordinary riches surrounding us. We originally decided to make these videos as a way to share our lives with our loved ones worldwide during the pandemic lockdowns. However, we soon realised that many others are at home alone, and it is our privilege to open our home to you, our new friends. We hope you will join us on our adventures in this exceptional location, and we look forward to sharing a little Château Love!

For everyone interested in the tapestries, I strongly recommend reading the following book "The Lady and the Unicorn" by Tracy Chevalier. It is a beautifully written novel not just about the creation of a work of art, but also interwoven with seduction and adventure.

I cannot tell you enough how much I love your vlogs! Whether they are about museums, chateaus, palaces, and your every day life, I get excited to watch, as your vlogs come up. This museum was fantastic. Loving tapestries as much as I do, you brought this amazing historical place to us. Since I can no longer travel, thank you for this. The love I hear in your voice describing all of the wonderful things you do, transforms me, like I'm actually with you. Please keep your great vlogs coming, again, I love seeing your bell come up, that another vlog is about to happen!

I got so emotional watching this. It's everything I dreamed about going to see. Castle's, tapestries, photos, statues, figures of saints. History at It's finest. Dripping off the pages, you tell the story really well.

My first encounter with Unicorn tapestries was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, specifically, the Cloisters, when my husband and I were dating, and I found the story of the unicorn being a symbol for Jesus Christ compelling because of it's purity, uniqueness and power. After some time dating each other, I received a gift from him of a gold unicorn head on a gold chain, which was such a magical moment for me. We also came across another in the Hearst Castle in California while on vacation. Such wondrous works of art! Thank you for sharing these beautiful discoveries with us.

I love this tour of the museum. I live in the USA and enjoy the stories you give when going to different places. I do have a replica tapestry of the lady and the unicorn (À MON SEUL DESIR " To MY ONLY DESIRE") that I adore. Thank you for sharing the secrets of the tapestry. It gave me some more information that I did not know.

Dear Vivienne, thank you so much for sharing this tour. There is something mysterious about The Lady with the Unicorn also in my life. In my family, we were needling The Touch when I was about 10 or 12 years old, some decades ago. It went hopelessly wrong and we gave it up. Later on, my mother just bought it ready, although it was a bigger expense for our household at that time. My mother also played the piano and the organ like yours do, Vivienne. The tapisserie used to hang above the piano. I still think it fitted very well because playing the piano has much to do with touching. You might know about L'art de toucher le clavecin, the famous book of advice from the great french clavecin player Francois Couperin. I became a pianist and piano teacher as a heritage of my gifted mother. The Lady with the unicorn is still with me, some years after the death of my mummy. The Lady often crossed my way in special moments, last time when you showed your bag first, so once again today. I never was so near to the original as this time. Thank you!

Some of the most beautiful tapestries I have ever seen are in the Biltmore outside of Asheville, North Carolina, USA. Being from the US and Florida, I am sure you have been there Vivienne. Good to see Ashley again. You guys are such beautiful human beings inside and out. Thanks for the history lesson. You have given me a better understanding and appreciation of tapestries and the museum itself.

I am so overwhelmed with this tour. I have loved Medieval art and its richness for years (although not appreciated by my family -- LOL). I have a village I am building which is a 1:48 scale. Within the village is a chateau (formerly called a castle) and a cathedral. Both will hold "tapestries" from that wonderful time. Thank you for taking us with you. Your channel is more than you and your family (which we love dearly) but taking us around on your visits to wonderful places fills my heart with joy and peace. Thank you.

As perspective was not yet worked out at the time of the Middle Ages, distance was shown vertically as in those tapestries with foliage and animals, rendered two dimensionally one above the other. Also, when perspective was discovered later in the Renaissance, it was understood that the eye can never grasp detail. However, in the Medieval period, each bit of flower or foliage was rendered with minute detail. This is worth knowing next time we view medieval artwork, simply for the sheer joy of how such information deepens our appreciation of the period. It was lovely to see these techniques rendered so characteristically in those precious tapestries. Thank you for showing them to us xxxx

Thank you so much for the visit of the musée de Cluny. It's so marvellous. These tapisseries are so beautiful. I have seen carpet of this quality on the National museum in Yerevan (Armenia). I am sure she will like it as a teacher. And I think she doesn't know so much about these period...

I purchased a tapestry at Liberty’s in London in 1992. I was told the original is in the Cluny museum. The scene is a garden with several ladies and two children. There are trees and flowers. It appears that they are picking fruit. The background is a very dark blue or black. I really love it but wish I knew more. That was a fantastic video Vivienne. Thank you so much 😍😍

If you are into tapestries; i recommend you some museums in Belgium; First of all the Art&History Museum located in Jubelpark/Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels, MOU; museum in the city hall of Oudenaarde and TAMAT in Tournai. All the cities mentioned were known as tapestry making cities until the time when Louis XIV conquered Belgium, closed the workshops and moved the best flemish/brabantine weavers to Manufactures des Gobelins when the king was centralising all art education and manufacturing. fun fact; the tapestries hangingin the Sistine chapel in the Vatican, were woven in Brussels and costed much much more than all the paintings done by Michelangelo. Other recommendation for (flemish) tapestries is Genoa; especially in the Villa del Principe- Palazzo di Andrea Doria. Or bit more exotic; in Marsala: Museo degli Arazzi Epoca Fiamminga. Besides all this; The Musee de Cluny is one of my favourite museums in Paris. Thanks for making this video.
