I recognize the painting in the thumbnail. It's from an old Irish ballad about a princess and the knight who were in love. It cost quite a bit to enter a convent. Most women were from wealthy families and many, probably most had no choice. It was a way to either get rid of daughters who couldn’t be married off for various reasons (too many daughters or in debt and couldn’t afford a dowry/bad reputation/too intelligent/not pretty enough/ or to have someone to pray for a parent’s soul, often a living parent). While there were parents who loved their daughters, many were not valued. There are examples of daughters who had a vocation but were married off anyway. It was not a good time to be female. Extra sons were also forced to take orders. Not surprising these folks failed to follow the rules. Not to mention that in some cases the rules themselves were so strict most humans couldn’t follow them anyway.

9.33 - I'm a bit confused. That picture is of the medieval fortress of Tervuren, which was once used as a hunting lodge by the Dukes of Brabant. There are only a few remnants of walls and cellars to be seen (oldest bits from around 1200 according to the heritage site). It was constantly modified and extended over the centuries, but ultimately got destroyed. Do you happen to have a source for the building work Margaret has done? I can't find much about it, but it sounds interesting. Margaret's husband, Duke Jan II, died in the castle in 1312, maybe of because of kidney stones. Actually, the engraving at 4.28 is a theoretical portrait of Jan. Thx
