Going on a Medieval Crusade was a male mission, a military enterprise in which only men could fight. Obviously, the women stayed home and did womanly things while their dashing, knightly husbands rode off and defended the Holy Land. Right? Wrong. Actually, many women also took up the cross and went off on Crusade, and they weren’t just the important warrior noble women, like Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Described as being “essential yet despised”, there were also the servants who looked after the animals and accompanied the army, the washerwomen, the camp-following prostitutes, and not forgetting the lice-pickers as well. Welcome to Medieval Madness.

The late Terry Jones of Monty Python was a serious scholar of medieval lives and has a great series on this. You'll find it balanced and directed towards the misery of both men and women. PS 3 hours later: Let me be clear -- nothing can rival Medieval Madness, though!🏆

This video’s release and the fact that I FINALLY just caught up on The French History Podcast hosted by Gary Girod (I can’t believe I have to wait two weeks between releases now) is crazy. The Crusades are truly interesting to learn about. The Church, its goals, its endeavors, its impact on all of society is unlike anything else, IMO. History is amazing. Thanks for shedding some more light on it, Medieval Madness. As you old redcoats say, “Cheers!” Love from the mitten state.

Eleanor of Aquitaine didn’t “[lead] a crusade” she accompanied her husband, King Louis VII, on two different campaigns during the Second Crusade…which is still pretty badass. Love Eleanor of Aquitaine- she’s a fascinating person. (Also the time stamp you referenced, OP is actually discussing a totally different person- Margaret of Provence…)
@kellyshomemadekitchen
@kellyshomemadekitchen Ай бұрын
@@h0rriphic Okay, Captain Literal, but according to this narrator, after her husband died she took over his leading of that particular crusade. As to the time stamp, I tried several times to get that during her story but apparently there was a glitch that kept putting it on the lady after her.
